Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
"Cash?" "Coo coo coo!" Scorched black from the fire, Cash blended perfectly into the darkness, leaving only his shiny eyes visible as he stared at her through the yard gate. Natalie leaned in for a closer look. Sure enough, it was her playboy rooster. "Since you were in the yard, why didn't you answer when I called you earlier?" Cash replied, "Coo coo coo!" After slipping out of his own yard, he'd gone searching for a place to hide. There was nothing in Natalie's or Harold's yard—everything was bare, making it easy for anyone to spot a chicken just standing there. And it wasn't just their yards. Everyone's gardens were empty after the Great Heat and acid rain. There was nothing left alive. The only things left were some bare pavilions and benches. There was nowhere to hide. But this house had artificial grass, artificial flowers, and all kinds of decorations, making it the perfect place for Cash to hide. So Cash snuck in without a second thought. He'd already spent so much energy flirting with the hens. Then, he was chased all around the villa by Snowy and then got caught in a fire. When he finally found a place to rest, he just wanted to sleep. When Natalie found him, he was sleeping soundly behind a big flowerpot in the corner. If Lucky hadn't had such a good nose, there was no way Natalie would have found him that night.Natalie shot Cash a glare. "You're in trouble for running around! Get out of here!" He obediently scurried out. Just then, the villa door swung open. A man shouted, "Who's out there?" Cash had only gotten halfway out the gate, so the rest of his body was still inside. With his feathers scorched and blackened, it was impossible to tell his head from his tail. At first glance, he looked like some strange, black creature about to crawl into someone's yard. Natalie immediately reached over and yanked him out. The man, holding a knife, yelled, "Who are you? What are you doing here? If you're here to steal, get lost. There's no food left in this house!" So now I'm being mistaken for a burglar. Before either of them could respond, a woman came out behind the man, holding a candle in one hand and a kitchen knife in the other. "Bruno, what's going on?" The man quickly shielded her. "Whitney, get inside. I can handle this." "No way. Stop trying to act tough and handle everything by yourself." She stretched her candle forward, shining the light onto Cassian and Natalie's faces. "Mr. Holland?" Cassian recognized the two in the yard right away. They were Whitney and her bodyguard Bruno, whom he had met earlier. Bruno's features were extremely harsh—sunken forehead, sharp cheekbones, and a jutting chin. With the candlelight casting shadows across his face, he looked even scarier.Hiding in Natalie's arms, Cash was so frightened he fluffed up all his feathers, and Lucky barked twice to show her courage. Natalie stayed calm and turned to Cassian. "You know them?" Cassian nodded. "We met earlier today." He then turned to address the two. "Ms. Jensen, Mr. Reed, fancy seeing you again." Whitney and Bruno didn't relax when they recognized Cassian. In fact, they seemed even more tense. Whitney looked at the woman next to Cassian and frowned. "You must be Natalie, right?" Natalie looked her up and down. "You know me?" Whitney had grown up abroad. By the time she moved back to live in Drakoria, Natalie was already in college. So although they both lived in Hillside Villa District, they'd never actually met. Whitney said, "I don't know you, but I've heard of you. You're the one who killed the Boltons, right?" Natalie raised her eyebrows, about to reply, when Whitney continued, "I don't know what happened between you and the Boltons, but killing is wrong. You should be seeking forgiveness and cleanse your soul, not continuing down a path of violence." Natalie was genuinely surprised. She doesn't look much older than 20, but she talks like some preachy old lady. Looking at her, Natalie felt like she was back in high school, being scolded by her teacher for not studying hard enough. Natalie twitched the corner of her mouth. "When did I ever go around killing again?" After killing the Boltons, she'd been lying low at home the whole time.If Isabelle and Saniya hadn't pestered her so much, she wouldn't have bothered with them at all. She moved here for a peaceful life, not to pick fights. Worried that Whitney would say something to provoke the other two, Bruno quickly cut in, "If you don't want trouble, why are you sneaking around our yard in the middle of the night?" Sneaking around? ... I'm just here to catch a runaway rooster! Natalie didn't bother arguing with them and just offered a simple explanation. "We're here to look for our lost pet."
