Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Cassian argued, "I wasn't laughing." Then he went after the runaway hen. "Let's hurry up and help out." With that, he darted in front of Snowy. Together with Olivia, they flanked her from both sides. Natalie glanced at the couch, then at the kitchen. It looked like things were worse in the kitchen, so she ran in to help Ghania put out the fire. The five of them scrambled for a good while before finally getting everything under control. When they saw the mess around them, everyone was stunned. The couch was half-burned, there were chicken droppings on the floor, and feathers were everywhere. The kitchen was a disaster, with pots and pans scattered all over. Thankfully, the food on the dining table hadn't been knocked over and could still be eaten. Olivia, out of breath, held the still-wriggling Snowy in her arms. "I'll go lock her up at home first." With that, she hurried upstairs. The rest of them stood around in shock, then started laughing when they saw how ridiculous everyone looked. Harold pulled a feather off Cassian's shirt. "Good thing there were enough of us, or we wouldn't have been able to handle this mess!" Ghania grinned. "Seriously, I almost had to start looking for a new house!" Natalie looked a little embarrassed. "This is all Cash's fault. I'll pay for any damage." Just then, Olivia came back downstairs, having settled Snowy. "Count me in! Snowy was part of it, too." Natalie waved it off. "Snowy's had it tough enough. Honestly, it was all Cash's fault." Olivia started to protest. "But it was still Snowy who ... " Ghania cut them off. "Oh, enough. What damage? The house is just a bit messy, that's all. We'll clean it up later. Let's eat first!" Natalie glanced at the battered couch. "But the couch ... " The poor couch was charred and falling apart, the smell of burnt fabric everywhere. Ghania didn't care. "The couch belonged to the previous owner anyway. I never liked it. Now we have a reason to get a new one." Harold chimed in, "I just turned the guest room in the basement into a lab, and I've got a couch down there with no place to put it. Now I can swap it with this one." Ghania nodded. "That's right. We've got the couch from Maplecourt in storage upstairs. There are plenty of replacements, don't worry." Olivia and Natalie both smiled. "All right, we'll help you clean up later." Ghania called everyone over. "Come on, let's eat before the food gets cold." Everyone sat down at the table, eating while filling Cassian in on what happened. Natalie had let Cash out to play with Snowy, but instead of going upstairs, he ran to Ghania's breeding room in the basement. He managed to flirt with two hens down there. Meanwhile, Snowy didn't know about Cash's arrival. She had been wandering the second floor with her chicks. The chicks got bored and led their mom downstairs. That's when Snowy caught Cash in the act—he had one hen on each wing, living it up. The next thing they knew, the two chickens were fighting.Snowy looked absolutely heartbroken. Cash, on the other hand, acted like he was completely in the right. Snowy chased Cash everywhere, yanking out his feathers until he ran for his life. They ended up on the first floor. Snowy was so mad that she went wild, bouncing all over the place. Cash darted into the kitchen and, in his panic, caught on fire, and almost turn himself into a literal roast chicken. He panicked and ran around the house, setting the couch on fire too. If Natalie hadn't opened the door in time and shooed the burning Cash outside, things would've gotten even worse. Cassian listened to the whole saga and couldn't stop smiling. "Cash really is a playboy rooster." Before Natalie could say anything, Harold teased, "They say pets are like their owners. Buddy, you'd better watch out." Cassian grinned. "No worries. I'm the clingy type. I won't give her a chance to talk to any other guy." Natalie glared at Harold, then at Cassian, not sure who to scold first. Olivia set down her utensils. "I have to disagree, Harold! Pets are nothing like their owners. I'm not even a fraction as brave as Snowy." Everyone started laughing, remembering Snowy's wild behavior. Especially Ghania, who'd never seen such a chicken fiasco in her fifty-odd years. It was like a cartoon. These chickens were something else. Seeing everyone laughing, Natalie spoke up for Snowy. "Hey, stop teasing Snowy! She's really sad! A hen's heartbreak is still heartbreak."Olivia nearly choked on her food. "All right, after dinner, I'll make sure to comfort my heartbroken girl."
