Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 294 Recording

Since Natalie had gone through a rebirth herself, that was the first explanation that came to her. Cassian, though, wasn't buying it. He was sure Charlotte was just a little person pretending to be a kid. They even placed a bet on it. It was obvious that Cassian won. Natalie started realizing maybe being reborn wasn't as common as she thought. Both she and Braxton only got their second chance because of the storage space bracelet. Most people didn't get that lucky. Olivia, who had been quietly watching, studied Charlotte for a while. "Yeah, I see it now." Charlotte's face was young and pretty, but it lacked that soft, round look kids usually had. Olivia had always chalked it up to Charlotte being skinny. But with the thought of her being an adult, the signs were suddenly obvious. Charlotte caught Olivia's suspicious gaze and panicked. She quickly threw herself into Olivia's arms and started playing innocent. "Mom! What are you even talking about? What's a little person? I don't get it." Since Olivia hadn't heard Charlotte confess earlier, Charlotte still had a chance to trick her. After all, Olivia had always doted on her. As long as Charlotte could get out of here quickly, she'd be safe. So, she started crying. "Natalie must be mad that I showed up early and bothered them. She's just saying all this to scare me." But Olivia's face made it clear that she wasn't convinced. Charlotte cried harder and begged Natalie instead. "Nat, I promise I won't bother you again. Please don't be mad at me." Natalie was disgusted. "Don't call me 'Nat'! It sounds gross!" Seeing Charlotte still trying to argue, Natalie gave up pretending. "Cassian, where's my phone?" Cassian smirked. "Didn't you leave it on the shelf by the TV?" "Oh, right." Natalie strolled over and picked it up. Charlotte suddenly had a bad feeling. After two years of the world being in ruins, she had gotten used to living like it was back in the primitive days. High-tech stuff, like mobile phones, seemed like something from the last century. Even people with generators and fuel, like Olivia, could barely keep the air conditioning on, let alone waste power charging a phone. No calls, no internet—phones were basically dead weight now. So, Charlotte had never paid attention to the phone on the shelf. She figured it was just a useless brick. But then, Natalie tapped a few times on her phone, and Charlotte's voice came out. "My real name is Charlotte Lynch. I'm 30 years old ... " Natalie slid the phone over to Olivia and shot Charlotte a meaningful smirk. "I recorded everything." Charlotte's face went pale.Soon, Olivia finished watching, her mood turning darker by the second. Before Olivia could blow up, Charlotte started crying even harder. "Mom, they made me say it! I just said random stuff so I could last until you came. I had no choice!" Olivia didn't believe a word of it. "Nat has got nothing against you. Why would she make you say all that?" Charlotte sulked. "Because she hates me being near Cassian—" Olivia snapped, "Near him? You're not even worthy!" Her chest burned with anger. The thought of this woman, who was about her age, acting cute in her arms and calling her "Mom" made her sick. Charlotte cried so hard that she could barely breathe. "You're my mother! How can you not believe me and trust someone else?" Olivia shot back, "Someone else? That's you." Before the fight went further, a frantic knock shook the door. "Olivia! Idol! Open up!" It was Harold. "I'll get it," Cassian said. The moment the door opened, Harold greeted him. "Hey, dude." Then, he rushed toward Unit 1401. "I need to find Olivia." Cassian stopped him. "She's with us." Harold turned immediately. "Is Lottie here too? Did Olivia bring her?" Cassian nodded. "She's inside."Harold hesitated, then said, "There's something wrong about Lottie." Cassian looked surprised. "You noticed too?" Harold was stunned. "You guys know too?" Cassian waved him in. "Let's talk inside." Harold stepped into Unit 1402 and saw Charlotte clutching Olivia's leg, crying like crazy. He hurried over and pulled Olivia aside. "Olivia, watch out." Olivia looked at his worried face and asked, "Harold, what's going on?" Harold pointed straight at Charlotte. "Her mom didn't leave—she was stabbed to death on the eighth floor!"
