Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Natalie smirked and pulled out a bayonet. "My turn." When the blade aimed for her eye, Lottie panicked, screaming, "I'll talk! I'll tell you everything!" Natalie's grin widened with satisfaction. "Then make it clear. Don't waste our time." Lottie trembled from head to toe. Cassian's earlier punch had shaken her awake. Those two weren't normal people. They were monsters. Her lips quivered as she admitted, "My real name is Charlotte Lynch ... " Ten minutes later, Natalie sighed at Cassian. "Looks like you win." He smirked. "I rarely gamble. But if I do, I won't lose." She rolled her eyes. "Try being humble. Arrogance doesn't take you far." That was when it hit Charlotte—they had been betting on her. Yesterday's kindness was nothing but a setup. They had suspected her from the very start. Charlotte, who'd thought she'd been smart, suddenly felt a chill and dropped to her knees, shaking with fear. "That's it! I swear! I never hurt Olivia or either of you. Please, just let me go!" Natalie glared down, full of contempt. "You didn't hurt anyone—or you just haven't had the chance yet?" Charlotte shook her head hard. "Olivia gives me food and even takes care of me. Why would I hurt her?" Natalie's stare cut into her. "What happens when the food is gone?"Charlotte froze, stammering, "T-then we'd figure something out together ... " Natalie gave a cold laugh. "Forget Olivia. Yesterday, the way you looked at me annoyed me." Charlotte stuttered, "W-what look? I was just jealous. You're pretty and have someone who cares about you." Natalie clicked her tongue. "Nice flattery." Cassian added, "The second part is true." She raised an eyebrow at him. He grinned. "You're pretty, and someone cares about you." Natalie rolled her eyes. "Save it. Not in front of outsiders." Just then, a knock sounded at the door. "Nat, are you home?" It was Olivia. Charlotte grabbed onto the chance and screamed, "Mom! Mom, help me!" Natalie stayed calm, glanced at Charlotte, and walked to open the door. As soon as Olivia stepped inside, Charlotte burst into tears. "Mom, save me!" She tried to rush over, but her legs gave out the moment Cassian glared. Olivia, however, was focused on Natalie. "Nat, are you alright?" Natalie shook her head. "I'm fine." Olivia explained, "When I woke up, Lottie was gone. I guessed she'd come here." Her brows knit. "What did she do?" Natalie handed over some slippers. "Come in first." Olivia came in to find Charlotte bawling, her face a mess of tears and snot. "Mom, help me! I'm so scared!" But Olivia just frowned. "Why'd you bother them without telling me?" Charlotte froze. Why wasn't Olivia worried about her? Why was she scolding her instead? She tried to explain, sniffling, "I was starving. You weren't awake, so I came to find Natalie and Cassian." Natalie raised an eyebrow. Now she's calling him Cassian, huh? Charlotte pushed on. "They didn't give me food, and they even kept me from going home—" Natalie cut her off. "Charlotte, do you think I won't hit you just because Olivia is here?" Olivia turned sharply. "Charlotte?" Natalie nodded. "She's not an innocent kid but a 30-year-old woman named Charlotte Lynch." Olivia was genuinely shocked. "Thirty?!" She looked over. Yesterday, she thought Lottie was just a scheming child, too smart for her age. It turned out that Charlotte was an adult! She could hardly believe it. "No way ... " Natalie explained, "She's a little person. Her body looks like a kid's, but she's grown." Olivia stared at the sobbing girl, baffled. "But even little people still have adult faces, right?"She hadn't met a little person before, but she'd seen short videos and news. Natalie shrugged. "That's true. But maybe because she's pretty, her face looks even younger." At first, Natalie hadn't guessed Charlotte was a little person. She thought maybe she was like herself—someone who was reborn. Natalie had returned four years before her death. Her body was 22, but her true age was 26. So, she wondered if Charlotte was the same—living in a nine-year-old body, but actually an adult inside.
