Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 295 I'll Handle It

The other three turned sharply toward Charlotte. She hung her head, looking guilty. Harold went on, "I ran out of iron in my lab, so I went door to door and checked if there were pots or pans I could use. When I got to the eighth floor, I overheard some people talking." He repeated what he had heard. One said, "If we knew there was another body on the eighth floor, we wouldn't have risked eating those people on the first floor burned by acid rain." "Yeah, my stomach still feels like it's on fire." "I remember her. She came in with us. The rain didn't even touch her!" "Looks like she got stabbed. Holes all over her body." "It had to be those psychos. Nobody else is left in this building except us and the original residents upstairs." "Didn't she have a daughter? Where's the kid?" "Who cares! Enough talking. I'm starving!" "Good thing we found her before it got worse. There are just a few maggots. She'd have rotted in no time ... " When Harold finished, everyone stared at Charlotte. Olivia's eyes went wide. "You actually killed your adoptive mom, the one who loved you?" That woman had thought Olivia would hurt Charlotte and had charged in to protect her, not even afraid of a gun. Since Charlotte was already 30, that woman couldn't have been her real mother, yet she still went out of her way to protect Charlotte."How can you be so heartless?" Earlier, Charlotte had said she survived thanks to a kind person who took her in, never mentioning murder. She'd claimed her mother went home to get food. Now that she'd been exposed, she had no excuse. Her knees gave way, and she crumpled to the floor. She glared at Harold with pure hate. She blamed him for everything. If he hadn't been there, maybe she could've explained herself. Olivia noticed the look Charlotte shot at Harold and got even angrier. She kicked Charlotte hard. Charlotte screamed and begged, trembling. "I'm sorry! Please forgive me! I was starving! If I didn't get rid of her and come to you, I would've died!" At first, all she wanted was a shot at surviving upstairs. Even though the women on the 14th floor were supposed to be terrifying, she was hurt and in so much pain. She figured she was just a "kid". Even if they treated her badly, they wouldn't kill her. And she was right. When she spotted Olivia's stash, she knew she'd found paradise in the apocalypse. She had to move in. No one could stop her. Olivia looked at Charlotte with disgust. "Why would I forgive you? You should be apologizing to your adoptive mom." Charlotte was startled. "Mom, Lottie is wrong—"Olivia cut her off sharply, "Stop calling yourself 'Lottie'!" She doesn't deserve to tarnish the name of my dead child. Charlotte shrank back, muttering, "That was truly my nickname when I was little ... " Natalie asked Olivia, "So, what are you going to do with her?" When Charlotte confessed earlier, she never mentioned murdering her adoptive mother. It was obvious that it wasn't her first time doing something cruel. She probably climbed her way here, stepping over the bodies of kind people. Natalie squinted at Charlotte, who was lying there and pretending to be pitiful. Charlotte knew too much and had already revealed her true nature. Natalie wasn't planning on letting her live. Olivia's gaze was icy as she said, "I'll handle it. No need to mess up your place." Natalie nodded. After all, Olivia was the one who brought Charlotte in. If Olivia didn't handle her properly, Natalie could always step in later. With acid rain hammering down outside, there was no chance of escape. Olivia dragged Charlotte back to Unit 1401. Harold quietly left. Not long after, a bloodcurdling scream echoed through the building. In Unit 1402, Natalie glanced at Cassian. "Think Olivia is handling her?" Cassian shrugged. "No clue. But judging by that scream, it looks like you don't need to do anything." She raised an eyebrow. "How did you know I was still thinking of stepping in?" He smirked. "I know you too well."Natalie looked him over. "It's unsettling being read so easily." "Do you want security or me?" "Security." Cassian squinted. "Wrong answer." He scooped her up and tossed her onto the couch. Lucky, Cash, and Baron were speechless. They're at it again! The three of them stared, totally unfazed, sitting in a row. Downstairs, people whispered nervously. "What was that just now? It gave me chills." "Sounds like someone screaming. It's pretty brutal." "Aren't we the only ones left in this building?"
