Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Rocky spotted Natalie through the car window and bent down at once to greet her. "Hey girl, heading somewhere?" Natalie grinned and got straight to the point. "Rocky, didn't you want into the inner circle? Go on inside." Rocky lit up. "The boss said yes?" Natalie smirked. "He didn't really have another option." She hit the gas and sped away. Rocky stared after the exhaust, and he was baffled. What was that supposed to mean? But he shook it off quickly and rushed toward the villas. By the time the sky was just turning pale, Natalie finally made it close to her place. She found a quiet corner and tucked both her car and supplies into her storage space. As she neared the entrance of her building, she saw a group of people gathered. The weather had turned colder, yet these people still had the energy to gather and watch the spectacle. Or maybe, the ones left alive were already used to the turmoil. Natalie stayed at the edge and asked casually, "What's happening?" The man didn't even look back. "What else? That crazy woman on the 13th floor is at it again!" Another added, "Yeah, if the psycho was here, would she dare act up like this?" He glanced back carelessly, then his eyes widened. "Wait, the psycho?" Natalie frowned. Enough already with calling her a psycho!Everyone nearby heard him and turned toward her. "God, the psycho's back!" "Run!" The group scattered in seconds. Natalie was speechless. Am I really that frightening? She kept going upstairs, and she was still confused. Which crazy woman on the 13th floor? Isn't that where Owen, Elena, and Olivia used to stay? Owen and Elena are both gone, and Olivia had moved next door to me. Who else could it be? Just then, a shrill voice rang out above. "Neighbors! Help me out here! "This greedy brat is bullying a poor widow! "Heavens, why must I suffer like this!" Natalie winced at the piercing screech, her head aching. She led Lucky up to the 13th floor and saw a woman in her 50s perched on the landing between the 13th and 14th. The woman was rail-thin, her features sharp and lined, with a deep scowl set between her brows. She looked nasty as ever. Where did this old hag come from, yelling like this? The woman noticed Natalie with her dog and stopped yelling at once, replacing it with a greedy grin. She scrambled up and hurried over. "Hey girl, are you planning to cook that dog? Can you spare me some? I've been starving!" What? Natalie shot her a glare. "Stay away!" After her time in the mountains and at the base, no one had dared target her dog. Seeing someone eyeing him like that again made her furious. The woman shrank back under Natalie's stare, but then stubbornly kept on. "What's with that face? City people have no kindness, keeping everything for themselves, and no respect for elders! What's wrong with sharing a little?" Natalie's head pounded from her shrill tone. Who gave this hag the guts to mouth off at her? Natalie was just about to kick her away when Lucky lunged first, clamping onto the woman's calf. The woman shrieked in pain, screaming like a pig being slaughtered. "Ah! Help! The vicious dog is tearing me apart!" At that moment, the door on the 14th floor swung open. Olivia peeked out, and her eyes lit up. "Nat! You're back!" Natalie smiled and was about to reply, but Lucky suddenly let go of the woman's leg and leapt at her throat. Olivia panicked. "Stop! Don't hurt her!" Natalie caught Lucky in time. Lucky gave her a confused look but obediently retreated. The woman, who was gasping for air, collapsed on the floor while clutching her leg. She cried nonstop."This is insane! That dog bit me!" Natalie ignored her and asked Olivia, "You know her?" Olivia nodded, looking uneasy, then went to help the woman up. "Mom, are you hurt?" Mom?! Natalie froze. "She's your mother?" How could someone as soft and kind as Olivia have a mother this nasty and loud? Wait, something was off. She remembered Olivia saying her parents died long ago. While supporting the woman, Olivia explained, "She's Daniel's mother, my mother-in-law." Natalie paused to take it in. So, she was Daniel's mom. The woman was now on her feet. She ranted, "In 50 years of my life, I've never met such a rude girl! How dare your dog attack me? Back in our village, a dog like that would be beaten dead with a stick!"
