Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 217 Sharing the Load

Cassian glanced at her. "Keep it. You're a girl. You need it more than I do." Natalie froze. Did he really just turn down a gun? Who in their right mind did that? She couldn't believe it. Too noble for her taste. She knew she could never do the same. Still, she was the kind of person who treated good with good and bad with worse. Him being so generous made her think of how she had stashed away so much for herself earlier. Natalie couldn't bring out other stashes. From the six guns in the armory, she had only handed him one. And now he didn't even want it. That made her look like some selfish hoarder. She shoved the gun back at him. "Take it. It's the same model. What would I do with so many of the identical staff?" Cassian's eyes lit up with sudden interest. "The same model?" "Yeah," she said, nodding. "Exactly the same." He grinned and finally accepted it. "Alright, one for each of us." He slung it over his back just like she had and even flashed her a smile. Natalie saw him grinning from ear to ear and couldn't help but wonder—why is this guy suddenly in such a good mood? She lifted the ammo box in her hands. "We'll split the bullets, too. When we get upstairs, I'll find you a smaller box." Natalie had already sorted the ammo earlier. Inside were rounds for both handguns and shotguns. Cassian nodded. "Alright, let's head up."They opened the third-floor door, and Lucky came barreling out. The dog sniffed around them, barking with her mouth cocked to one side. "Arf, arf, arf, arf?!" Why'd you two go out without me?! Cassian looked down at the noisy dog. "Why does it seem upset?" Natalie shrugged. "Probably because we didn't take her with us to the fight." "So she likes fighting that much?" Cassian asked. Natalie nodded. "My dog's tough." Lucky barked again, louder this time. "Arf, arf, arf, arf!" I said, Why did you go out alone together?! Natalie knelt and patted her head. "Alright, alright. Next fight, you go first." Lucky's tail drooped. To her, the worst distance in the world was knowing what they said while they never understood her replies. Cassian crouched, scratching the dog's head too. "Yeah. Next fight, you lead." Lucky gave him a long look. Seriously? Then she turned, let out a fart, and stomped back to her little corner bed. Natalie stood, grabbed a small box, and split the bullets with Cassian. After that, she started packing her things. She didn't own much, so she was done in no time. Together, they began carrying stuff downstairs.Cassian balanced a load in his arms and glanced at her. "Why are you walking?" Natalie just stared, as if he were the biggest fool alive. "What do you mean? Of course I'm walking. You want me to crawl?" He frowned. "Why not use Blink?" Natalie stopped cold. Right. Why am I hauling everything by foot like an idiot? Guess I'm the fool. "You're right," she said quickly. With that, she vanished in a flash, reappearing the next second beside the van downstairs, heavy luggage already in tow. Cassian had braced himself this time, but when she vanished into thin air, he still couldn't hide his surprise. He carried the supplies slowly downstairs and saw Natalie already loading them into the van. "Your ... superpower sure comes in handy," he said. Natalie nodded in agreement. "Don't bother going back up. I can handle the rest." "Alright." Cassian stayed put, taking whatever she handed him and stacking it neatly inside. Before long, they had moved everything. Natalie scooped up Lucky, blinked one last time at the ground floor, and said, "Let's go!" Cassian stayed quiet, glancing back at the house where he had spent the last couple of weeks. Natalie caught the look and teased, "What's this? You almost sound like you'll miss this place."Cassian shot her a sidelong glance but said nothing. The Ford Transit had been sitting too long in the heat, and the air inside was awful. Natalie rolled down all the windows, then smiled at him. "Cassian, it's been great working with you. Until next time!" He pressed his lips together, hesitated for a beat, then replied, "Until next time." Natalie, remembering all the supplies she had kept for herself, added with a grin, "We should get together more often." Cassian assumed she was just being polite. He opened his mouth to respond, but Natalie had already started the van. She drove off humming a tune, cheerful from the smooth job and the haul of supplies. She was eager to get back. Natalie was in high spirits. The mission had gone smoothly, and she'd scored a mountain of supplies. Now she was eager to get home. She wondered how Cash was doing and if Olivia and Harold had managed to keep everything safe. In the passenger seat, Lucky grew restless, leaning out the window and barking a few times in the wind. Cassian watched the van disappear down the road and let out a quiet chuckle. "Dogs have more loyalty than people," he muttered before climbing into his own car. Natalie drove her little van toward the base and soon reached the front gate. Rocky was on duty again today. Suddenly she remembered the promise she had made to him, hit the brakes, and came to a stop.
