Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 219 Staying with Olivia

Olivia scowled. "Mom! Can you be quiet for once?" "Tch! You ungrateful brat! Clearly, you're all in on this. I bet she's doing your dirty work ... " Dorothy kept hurling those harsh words without stopping. Olivia threw Natalie an apologetic glance. "Nat, you should head back first. I'll come over later." Natalie gave the noisy woman a cold look, nodded to Olivia, and led Lucky upstairs. Before leaving, Lucky bared her teeth with a deep growl at the screeching woman. Dorothy jerked back in fright but spotted the leash and yelled even louder. "Stupid mutt! How dare you growl at me!" Natalie's eyes turned cold. For Olivia's sake, she controlled herself and pulled Lucky inside. Even after reaching home, the woman's curses still drifted up faintly. Natalie ignored them, set out food for Lucky, and started cleaning her place. No one had been living here for a while, so a thin coat of dust covered everything. By the time Lucky finished eating and Natalie was done tidying, someone knocked on the door. Olivia looked drained. "Sorry, Nat. My mother-in-law is impossible." Natalie frowned. "Why would your mother-in-law show up out of nowhere?" Olivia sighed. "It's a long story." They went to 1401. Olivia handed Natalie a glass of lemonade and began explaining what happened. The day after Natalie left, Olivia's troublesome mother-in-law suddenly arrived at her door. Olivia's husband was named Daniel. He was the oldest son, with a younger brother, Brandon, who was seven years behind him. Their family came from a mountain village. Daniel was a gifted student, but his parents were poor. They doted on the younger boy and pressured Daniel to drop out and work so Brandon could go to school. Daniel refused. He secretly packed up, took his admission letter, and went to Northlorn University. He paid his own way with part-time jobs. After graduating, he found a stable job and managed to stay in Northlorn. Later, he and Olivia worked hard, bought a house and a car, and built a life together. The only real problem in their marriage was Daniel's parents. Though Daniel sent plenty of money home, they always said it wasn't enough. They spoiled Brandon endlessly, letting him burn through cash. No matter how much Daniel sent, it was never enough. Eventually, they demanded to move into the city and live with Daniel and Olivia, just to bleed them for more. Dorothy was overbearing and constantly scolded or hit Daniel. He didn't want Olivia to suffer, so he never agreed. This dragged on for years. Then the end of the world came. The two sides lost contact, and Daniel died. His parents and brother survived only because their mountain village had escaped the floods. At first, they bragged that not moving to the city saved their lives. But then came the drought. Their backward little village had no air conditioning. They endured the heat. Their crops failed, and all their livestock died. Things spiraled. Old neighbors turned violent, wrapping cloth over their faces and robbing each other with hoes. With the heat at 140 degrees and constant fighting, many collapsed from heatstroke. Daniel's father died that way. That left Dorothy and Brandon. With no other choice, they came down the mountain to find Daniel. It took ages and nearly killed them, only to discover Daniel was gone. Dorothy instantly began screaming at Olivia. When she saw Olivia's friend Harold, her insults got even worse. Women like her were tough-skinned and foul-mouthed; arguing with them was pointless. If Ghania on the 15th floor hadn't stepped in, Dorothy would've chased Harold down just to keep yelling. After hearing all this, Natalie frowned. "Daniel's death wasn't on you. Why's she blaming you?" Olivia sighed. "She never liked me. Now she's just using this as an excuse to torment me. Honestly, she just wants to stay here and make me take care of her." "Take care of her?" "Yeah. She keeps saying I'm a tramp who seduced her son, ruined him, stole their belongings, and now she wants it all back." Natalie was stunned. It was the apocalypse! What was left to fight over? Even a billion in the bank was worthless now. Everything Olivia had was stuff she'd gathered little by little after the world collapsed. Daniel had nothing to do with it. Natalie asked, "So what will you do?" She looked around the place. There was no trace of anyone else living here. Clearly, Olivia hadn't let them into the 14th floor.Olivia was gentle, but she definitely had her boundaries.
