Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze
As he spoke of this, Baron's expression turned grim. "My mother had just given birth when Hayes brought his mistress to the hospital to steal me. It was a devastating blow for my mother. She was weak, and Hayes had already cut off all her contact with her family. He planned to send her abroad overnight, claiming she needed to recuperate, but his real intention was to let the mistress take her place. Then, he would have my mother quietly killed overseas. According to my grandfather, someone thankfully helped my mother, allowing her to contact him just in time. She escaped the fate of being sent abroad, and naturally, my grandfather retrieved me." As Baron finished this part of the story, scattered fragments of a memory flashed through Ruby's mind. "When your mother gave birth to you, was it at Southpoint Hospital?" Baron paused for a moment, then nodded. "Yes. My grandfather told me I was born at Southpoint Hospital." Waylon knew his wife wouldn't ask such a question without reason. He looked at Ruby. "Dear, did you know Baron's mother?" All eyes in the room turned to Ruby. Ruby shook her head. "I didn't know her. But more than twenty years ago, when I was newly pregnant with Natalie, I went to Southpoint Hospital. I was there for my registration. While I was there, in the hallway of the maternity ward, I saw a woman who had just given birth being dragged by a man, and there was blood on the floor. Another woman was with the man, also bullying the new mother. But the mother was clinging to a baby, refusing to let go even as she was being beaten and couldn't fight back. I was so furious that I shouted at them and took out my phone, saying I had called the police. When that awful pair heard me, they ran off. I called the nurses and doctors to help the woman back to her room. Afterward, the mother asked to borrow my phone to call her family. I saw she was covered in bruises, and as a fellow woman, I couldn't refuse."Everyone was stunned. Could it be such a coincidence? Was Ruby really the person who had saved Baron's mother all those years ago? Baron's eyes immediately welled up. "Mom... until the day my mother died, she was still talking about finding the woman who helped her. But there were no clues, and I've been searching for all these years without success. I never imagined it would be you! I thank you, on my mother's behalf." As he spoke, Baron moved to kneel before Ruby. Ruby quickly stopped him. "Goodness, what are you doing? I only helped your mother because I couldn't stand to see her in such a miserable state. Besides, after witnessing something like that, how could I dare register at that hospital? I left quietly and never went back. It was just a spur-of-the-moment decision; I never even told Waylon. It seemed like a small thing to me at the time, and I eventually forgot all about it." Baron shook his head. "No, Mom, it wasn't a small thing. Without you, my mother really would have been sent abroad and killed. I would have been taken by that woman, Candice, and used as a pawn to secure her status as the matron of the Gunn family. But she got what was coming to her. When I was three, Hayes fell for Yulia's mother and abandoned Candice. Yulia's mother was a prominent socialite and could bring business benefits to the Gunn family, so Hayes had some genuine feelings for her. He married her right after divorcing my mother. Not long after, she gave birth to Yulia. Then, when I was eight, she couldn't stand the sight of my mother and me. She framed my mother, and Hayes kicked us both out of the house." Hearing Baron's story, everyone sighed, moved by the tale. Natalie's heart ached as she listened to Baron recount his past, speaking of it as if it were someone else's story. She squeezed Baron's hand tightly. "It's all in the past. From now on, my mom and dad will treat you like their own son." "Yes, I believe that. Mom was able to save me and my mother from Candice over twenty years ago, and now, more than two decades later, you and I are married. This must be cause and effect. It's fate." Natalie was left momentarily speechless by Baron's words. Waylon had remained silent, but now that Baron had finished, he spoke. "What happened to that Candice? Was there any news of her after that?" "That's right. After Hayes abandoned her, some said she went abroad, others said she died. There's been no news of her since. So, Yulia, why did you suddenly bring her up? Is she connected to my wife, Natalie, being switched at birth?" Baron looked directly at Yulia. Yulia nodded. "Yes! She is the mastermind who arranged for Natalie to be switched at birth!" At Yulia's words, Ruby shot to her feet, her eyes filled with utter disbelief. "It was her? Why would she do that? I don't even know her! Was it just because I lent my phone to Baron's mother? But she was so viciously bullying a woman who had just given birth. Anyone who saw that would have done the same! Is she insane? She stole my daughter just for that?"
