Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze

Chapter 589 The Secretary

Baron immediately noticed Natalie's gaze lingering on Jonas and tugged her arm. "Am I not good-looking?" Natalie was exasperated by the jealous Baron. Yulia, too, was seeing this side of Baron for the first time. In her memory, Baron had always been cold and arrogant. She never imagined she would live to see the day he would act jealous, and she stared, momentarily stunned. Flynn and the others, however, were long used to it. Aside from a collective eye-roll, they could not be bothered to say a thing. A small smile played on Jonas's lips. He said nothing, but it was clear he found the situation amusing. Baron could feel he had become the center of attention, but so what? He stared straight into Natalie's eyes, demanding an answer. "Wifey, who's better looking? Me or him?" "You, you, you! You're the good-looking one, alright?" Natalie quickly placated him, afraid that if she said Jonas was, Baron might actually go and get plastic surgery. Only after getting his wife's affirmation did Baron finally brighten up. "Exactly. I'm just better looking than him." Jonas coughed, seeing Baron's childish behavior. "Perhaps we should hear what Yulia has to say about the switch-at-birth incident from twenty-odd years ago." "Yes, yes! I heard this incident is related to the Gunn family?" This was a wound that had never healed for Ruby. The moment Jonas brought it up, she immediately turned to Yulia.Yulia, still in a daze from Baron's display, quickly snapped back to attention. "Oh, right. It... it should be related to the Gunn family." "Should be?" Baron's brow furrowed. "It either is or it isn't. What do you mean, 'should be'?" Yulia cleared her throat and looked at Baron. "Do you remember our father had a secretary?" "That's your father." Baron truly felt that any association with the head of the Gunn family was bad luck. Yulia did not argue the point. "Fine, fine. My father. He had a secretary. You should know her." At the mention of that secretary, Baron's expression turned very ugly. Seeing this, Natalie asked, "Did this secretary hurt you in the past?" Baron shook his head and said, "The head of the Gunn family, Hayes, is a womanizer. His marriage to my mother was an alliance between our two families. But at the beginning, he pursued my mother relentlessly, making her believe there was a real emotional foundation for the alliance. She gave him her whole heart, only for Hayes to reveal his true colors after the wedding." Baron took a deep breath. "Hayes had a secretary named Candice even before he got married. She was called a secretary, but she was really his mistress. She was fooling around with Hayes before he even married my mother, and she became even more brazen after the wedding, showing no respect for my mother, the lady of the house. She would pick fights out of jealousy, and they even got into physical altercations, causing quite a stir in their social circle. Then, for some reason, after another fight with my mother, Candice got into a car accident on her way home and lost the ability to have children. She insisted the accident was my mother's doing, so she held a deep grudge. Hayes also hit my mother because of it."Baron paused, but Natalie's brows were now knitted tightly. He hit his wife for his mistress? How could Hayes be called a man? Flynn spoke up, "Your mother was in an arranged marriage with Hayes. If her own husband hit her, couldn't she go back to her family for protection?" Baron's eyes darkened. "Of course she notified her family. My grandparents were going to sever all business ties with the Gunn family over it. But Hayes apologized, promised to never see Candice again, and on top of that, my mother found out she was pregnant. So, for my mother's and the baby's sake, my grandparents decided to give Hayes one more chance." Natalie said nothing. She knew that for a prominent woman in that era, even in an unhappy marriage, divorce was not a simple option. The business ties between two families could not be severed so easily. Still, she felt a pang of sympathy for this mother-in-law she had never met. If an abusive man hit you once, there would be countless more times. By choosing to forgive, she had, in fact, sealed her fate. The living room fell silent. Everyone knew what the outcome of such a compromise would be. Natalie gently squeezed Baron's hand. Baron shook his head and continued, "You're all smart people, so you know the child in my mother's womb was me. Before I was born, Hayes did behave himself for a while. He was considerate and doting, which made my mother feel she had been right to forgive him. That lasted until the day I was born. Candice showed up again, demanding to take me and raise me. She said my mother's car accident had cost her the right to be a mother, so my mother owed her a child. The most ridiculous part? Hayes actually thought her request was perfectly reasonable."
