Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze

Chapter 528 The Family Dinner

Flynn’s hand, reaching to serve himself food, froze mid-air. Seeing Baron's actions, he couldn't help but roll his eyes. "Hey, Baron, this dish isn't just my sister's favorite—I happen to like it too!" "Oh, then ask your wife to serve it to you." Baron’s response was entirely matter-of-fact, causing Flynn’s mouth to twitch with irritation. "I don't have a wife yet." "Then go find one! I mean, look at you. You're already so old. Look, my wife and I have children who are already this big. If you don't get married soon, people will start thinking there’s an issue with your sexual orientation." Baron’s comment hit a nerve with both Waylon and Ruby. "He's right. Your sister is already married. Why are you, as the older brother, not motivated? Look at you, almost thirty, working non-stop every single day, and you still haven't found a girlfriend. You don't actually dislike women, do you?" The more Ruby spoke, the more she felt this might be true. She immediately put down her fork and looked at Flynn seriously. Flynn was nearly in tears. "Mom, I was just trying to eat a dish. Can we not switch topics so fast? Besides, what makes you think I dislike women? I just haven't had the time, or perhaps I haven't met the right person yet." "Waylon, starting tomorrow, you go to the company to work, and let our son go out and find a girlfriend. I want grandchildren!" Ruby issued a direct command. Both Waylon and Flynn looked helpless.Waylon had finally managed to retire. Now he had to go back to a nine-to-five job? Wasn't he too old for this? Flynn felt like he had been fired just for commenting on a dish. Was there any justice left in the world? Seeing their expressions, Ruby instantly flared up. "What? Is what I say no longer important? I suppose so. I have caused you enough trouble over the years; I really shouldn't be telling you what to do anymore." As she spoke, Ruby’s eyes welled up with tears. This immediately panicked both Waylon and his son. "Mom, no, that's not it. Please don't overthink this. I will go find a girlfriend tomorrow, okay?" "Honey, you are the boss of this family. Whatever you say goes, truly. I will go to work tomorrow." The father and son competed to comfort Ruby. Meanwhile, Baron, the instigator of the trouble, was busy feeding Natalie and whispered, "Eat quickly. I have something to discuss once you’re done." "But Mom and Dad…" Natalie was a little worried about them. Baron simply said, "That’s just Mom's way of handling Dad and your brother. Don't worry about it; Mom is secretly pleased." Natalie looked at Ruby. Indeed, although Ruby’s eyes were teary, the upward curve of her lips was impossible to suppress. Fine. This is their little private dynamic; I’ll stay out of it.Natalie ate while also keeping an eye on the children. Baron saw this and simply took over the task of watching the kids. By the time Waylon and Flynn had finished comforting Ruby, Natalie and the two children were done eating. Flynn looked at Baron's attentive demeanor. Just as he was about to make a sarcastic remark, Waylon shot him a stern look. Fine. It’s all for my sister; I’ll endure it! Flynn glared fiercely at Baron, who acted as though he hadn't seen a thing. "Mommy, I’m sleepy." Susie rubbed her eyes and yawned repeatedly. "How about I tuck you in?" Ruby, afraid Natalie was too tired, quickly offered. Susie shook her head and said, "I want Mommy to hug me!" "Mom, you eat first. I’m full. I’ll take the children to rest." Natalie said this and moved to pick up the child, but Baron was one step ahead of her. "Mommy can tell you stories, and Daddy will carry you back to the room, alright?" "Okay." Susie was already leaning on Baron’s shoulder. Sean didn’t need Baron to carry him; he just held Natalie's hand and left the dining room. After entering the room, the children clamored for Natalie to tell them a bedtime story. Natalie thought Baron would leave, but she saw him pull up a chair, sit down, and look at her with an expectant expression. "Aren’t you going to go eat?" Natalie asked. Baron said quietly, "I’m not very hungry. I’d rather listen to your story than eat. After all, I haven’t heard a bedtime story in many years since my mother passed away." This remark instantly silenced the children’s potential protests. Susie was overwhelmingly sympathetic to Baron. "Daddy, you’re so pitiful. Don’t worry. I’ll share a tiny, tiny bit of my Mommy with you, but only a tiny bit." She held up her little finger to demonstrate the size. Sean was truly exasperated.
