He Cheated. I Rose.
Chloe stood near the monitors, smiling as she watched Oralia's performance. Her acting was killer—truly impressive. Brian kept praising her. She needed no extra coaching, grasping the core of each scene almost instantly. "The temperature's pretty high right now. You don't need to stand here in the sun. There's a screen backstage where you can watch the feed comfortably." A voice spoke beside her. Chloe turned to see Eugene standing right next to her, holding a bottle of chilled water. He offered it to her. "Thanks." Chloe accepted it. During the break, everyone returned to the lounge. Landon personally brought in snacks for the group. The moment he entered, a warm, pleasant aroma filled the room. "What's that smell? It's really nice.""Carolyn's been making apologies to the whole crew all day," Oralia answered Landon directly. "This morning it was chicken soup, then some pastries, and now her fan club dropped off aromatherapy gifts to help everyone chill out." Landon glanced at Oralia, reminded that this young woman was a tricky problem. He raised an eyebrow with a sly grin. For some reason, a mischievous idea popped into his head. Didn't Edwin's company have tons of handsome young actors and beautiful actresses? Maybe he could line up a few for Oralia to see who caught her eye. If Oralia developed an interest in someone else, her focus would shift, and Eugene might finally get a real chance with Chloe. Not a bad plan. He'd have to explore that idea further later. Any method that worked was a good one. "People who know how to read the room and make amends are worth keeping around. Those who just stir up trouble? Not so much." Having said his piece, Landon plopped down in the seat across from Oralia. Oralia stared at the shifty-looking guy, her face falling. This guy kept staring at her like he was plotting something. Could it be that this guy was trying to make a move on Chloe? With that thought, Oralia stole a quick glance at Eugene, who was sitting quietly nearby chatting with Chloe. After just one second of hesitation, she mentally wrote Landon off completely. Her beloved Chloe was completely out of his league. If Chloe were to pick a man, he'd have to be at least on Eugene's level—stylish, commanding, and crucially, extremely wealthy. What did Landon have to offer? She snorted softly and looked down, returning to memorizing her lines for the next scene. Landon had just settled in his seat. He saw Eugene and Chloe deep in conversation, leaving him feeling like a third wheel. Oralia sat directly across from him. Fine—maybe he could try talking to Oralia? But the next second, Oralia let out that dismissive snort. He hadn't even spoken a word and he was already being rejected? What was that about? "Landon, feeling bored? Want to play odds and evens?" A clear, youthful voice piped up beside him. When Robert popped up next to him, Landon's mouth twitched. Please, no. This little prodigy has already taken plenty from me. My year-end bonus? Wiped out. ***** On set... The next scene would be much more challenging. It involved complex wire-fighting sequences. The costume and props teams were all on high alert. The safety crew was in position too. "This one's going to be difficult. Let's try to get it in one take. And everyone, please be careful," Brian personally reminded everyone before returning to his director's chair. Oralia and Carolyn took their positions. At Brian's signal, the cameras started rolling. On the monitor, the rider handled her horse with graceful control. The scene transitions looked beautiful. Chloe stood off to the side. Brian had offered her a chair, but she preferred to stand. From her position, she could watch both the monitor and the live action. It was noon, with the sun blazing down. Suddenly, a cool shade fell over her. Chloe looked up to find an umbrella above her head—held by... Eugene. He was holding a sun umbrella. A pink one. With little bunnies on it. If she remembered correctly, it belonged to Oralia's assistant. Did he not realize how odd he looked, standing there on set holding that girly umbrella? She wasn't surprised that Eugene and Landon had come—she'd brought them in as investors. What she hadn't expected was Eugene sticking with the crew constantly.Didn't the richest man have other things to do? "Thanks." Chloe offered a light smile, leaving it at that. Eugene didn't say more either. He watched the filming ahead. The two of them standing side by side under the umbrella created a warm picture. "Ah!" Suddenly, a woman's scream cut through the set. All heads turned. Carolyn's horse had spooked and bolted. The wire rig was still attached to her. With the horse out of control, the stunt performer who was supposed to execute a dangerous move was being dragged along at a full run. "Something's wrong!" someone shouted, stunned by the scene unfolding before them.
