If It's Not Me

Chapter 59 Evelyn's Best Friend

Daniel usually looked thin. However, when undressed, the perfection of his body was evident with a glance. His muscles did not bulge exaggeratedly, but it was clear they hid explosive power. His abs even looked perfectly chiseled. Nonetheless, what shocked Janice was the dense forest of scars that covered every inch of his body. A narrow, hideous scar ran from the back of his chest all the way to his lower abdomen. There were also a few circular scars that seemed to have been caused by some explosion. While she had never seen a gunshot wound, that was the first thing on her mind when she saw those scars. Janice covered her mouth to stop herself from expressing her shock. Instead, her eyes widened in astonishment as she slowly took in Daniel's body. She could not imagine how a person could have so many scars, many of which seemed fatal. Any average person would have died from just a quarter of the wounds Daniel had suffered. What has happened to Daniel? Daniel noticed her gaze and seemed reluctant to expose too much of his body. So, he turned around and hastily put his clothes back on. "As I said, I'm fine. It's just an old wound. I just need to sit down for a while." Janice stared at him. A hundred conflicting feelings were warring inside her heart. Finally, after a long moment of silence, she said, "C-Can I have another look?" Daniel was taken aback by her query. He was powerless when it came to Janice's teary eyes. Therefore, he reluctantly removed his shirt once more. Janice's lips trembled as she saw Daniel's body. She slowly stretched out a hand and gently traced the scars that adorned his body. He shuddered under her touch, which was simultaneously cold and tender. Then, he said, "You—" His sentence trailed off as he didn't know what to say. "Does it hurt?" she asked timidly. She stroked the scars softly as if she felt the sharp pain hidden behind each one. Her heart could not help but ache. Daniel froze as he felt the tenderness in Janice's words. Those words moved his stony heart as he stared at the teardrops in the corners of her eyes.Is she…crying because of me? The woman before Daniel entranced him. Apart from Evelyn, no other person had ever shed tears over his scars. At this moment, he imagined it was Evelyn reaching out and stroking his scars. How he wished to say, "Yes, it hurts." He wanted nothing more than to pour out the hurt he'd hidden from the world in front of the woman he loved. Of course, he knew that the woman before him wasn't Evelyn. It was Janice. "No, it doesn't hurt. These scars show my ten years of honorable service." Daniel took a deep breath. Once he sobered up, he leaned back to avoid her hand and quickly put on his shirt. Her hand was left hanging in mid-air, and the expression on her face was indecipherable as she looked at Daniel. Daniel's heart was in turmoil, and he didn't know how to face Janice's sudden outpouring of emotions, so he hastily said, "It's getting late. Y-You should rest."He didn't dare look at Janice as he spoke. He averted her gaze, quickly got up and stumbled out of the house. After he descended the stairs, he took a few sharp breaths of fresh air and felt his thoughts clear with each inhale. Ding! His phone chirped; he had just received a text. It was from Janice. The text simply read, "Good night." Daniel looked at the two scant words. He couldn't understand the emotions raging inside him as he replied, "Good night." He couldn't understand what Janice was thinking. She was a single mother, but she was willing to take her child and leave Goldshore with Daniel. Just that fact alone spoke volumes. Despite that, Daniel didn't know what to do with that information. To complicate matters further, she was also Evelyn's best friend.
