If It's Not Me
It seemed that Janice really intended to run away with Daniel, bringing Denise along with her. When he heard this, his heart shook violently at her actions. He finally understood everything. Janice had known all along that he would not let Xavier's gang go. Therefore, she made up her mind to run away with Daniel. Immediately, his harsh gaze softened. At that moment, Janice lowered her head as she hurriedly packed away her meager belongings. He couldn't help but blurt, "But I'm the one who killed them. So you've got nothing to do with it." "What the hell are you saying?" She jerked her head up and glared at Daniel. "You're the one who rescued me! Otherwise, I would've been—" Janice's voice came to a halt. She was reluctant to finish the sentence. She dared not imagine what miserable fate would have befallen her if Daniel had not arrived in time. Her sincerity slightly touched Daniel as he scrambled for an excuse. "But, I'm just an imposter." She didn't think twice before she retorted, "That's not how I see it." The dumbfounded look on Daniel's face made her realize that she had accidentally said the wrong thing. Her face turned a violent shade of red. She pursed her lips in embarrassment as she moved away from him, trying to hide the blush on her cheeks. "Well, quit standing around. Hurry and help me pack, or it really will be too late for us." Daniel frowned as he studied Janice's shy expression and found himself overwhelmed by a cocktail of emotions. Finally, he took a step forward. "Stop packing. Nothing will happen to us, I promise." "What?" Janice's eyebrows knitted together as she stared at Daniel in confusion. "Over my years as a soldier, I've managed to make a few contacts. Trust me, nothing will happen to us," explained Daniel. "Is that true?" She didn't dare believe the words coming out of his mouth. After all, twenty people had died. This wasn't something an army contact could simply brush under the carpet. "I'm serio—" Daniel started to nod, but his face turned a ghostly shade of white. Then, he spat out a mouthful of blood. This utterly tugged on Janice's already frayed nerves. "W-Why are you coughing blood? You told me that you weren't injured!" Anxiety clouded her face at his sudden weakness. Daniel's weak appearance flustered her. So, she stumbled around like a headless chicken, hurriedly found a towel, wiped the blood from the corners of his mouth, and then said breathlessly, "Let's go to the hospital. Come on!" As she said that, she began to tug at his arm helplessly. However, he gently removed her hand and shook his head. Finally, he said in a hoarse voice, "I'm fine. It's just an old injury." Before, it would have taken ten minutes of driving to get to Janice's current location from the seaside villas. An average person would take half an hour of uninterrupted and frantic running to cover the same distance. Back then, what was supposed to be a 10-minute drive from the seaside villa to Janice's place would have taken half an hour of uninterrupted and frantic running for an ordinary person to cover the same distance. Yet, Daniel had arrived in just five minutes, with Denise in his arms. It boggled everyone's mind to imagine how fast he ran. He had overexerted himself in getting here. The stress had reopened wounds that had not fully healed. This was why he looked even more sickly than he did before. "T-That's ridiculous! You just vomited blood!" Janice looked at Daniel worriedly, and she could feel her heart inexplicably aching at the sight. Nevertheless, he still shook his head and declined stubbornly. "I'm fine. Just let me sit down for a while." "No! Y-You're clearly injured. Wait here."Then, she headed back to the bedroom. Soon, she returned carrying a medical bag. There were standard first aid supplies and some over-the-counter medicines inside the bag. "Take off your shirt, and let me have a look." "I'm fine. Really." "Take off your shirt!" Daniel wanted to continue refusing. Nonetheless, one look at Janice's face told him there was no use in arguing. So, he had no choice but to remove his shirt. This was the first time she saw him shirtless. As she was a conservative person by nature, the sight of his lean body made her blush. Alas, her face changed abruptly once she got a closer look.
