If It's Not Me

Chapter 46 Someone Else Is Needed

In the afternoon, Daniel received a call from Janice. "Hi, Daniel. I'll have dinner with Nelson later, so please pick up Denise today." "Oh, okay," he answered, sounding dejected at the news. For some unknown reason, when he heard that Janice would be having dinner alone with Nelson, he felt as though someone had emptied a bucket of cold water over him. "Hey, d-don't get the wrong idea. I'm just thanking him for helping me with the successful signing of the contract," she explained out of the blue. On the other end of the line, she couldn't understand why she was explaining this, but she was a little worried that he would misunderstand her, and she quickly added, "I'll be right home after dinner." Then, she blushed, realizing that she seemed like a wife reporting her evening schedule to her husband. "Alright, I got it. I'll be waiting for you at home," Daniel replied. After Janice ended the call, she held the phone in her hands as her face continued to blush. "He says that he's waiting for me at home. What does he mean by that?" she couldn't help but murmur to herself. As she pondered over it, the edges of her lips curled upward unconsciously. Meanwhile, after Daniel hung up, he slumped on the couch for a long time, feeling bummed out. Even though he didn't plan to tell Janice that he was the one who helped her snag the deal with Sky Project, he was pissed when he heard that she had mistakenly assumed that it was Nelson that had a hand in it. She was going out to have dinner with him to express her gratitude, and he was even feeling a shard of regret for keeping mum about the matter. He sat for a full half hour before rising up gloomily to pick up Denise. At the kindergarten, he picked up Denise and returned home, but when he reached the door, he recalled that Janice didn't even give him the keys to the house! In the end, he could only bring Denise back to his own villa. "Wow, Daddy! This place is huge!" The moment Denise stepped in, her eyes widened, filled with amazement. "Take a seat and watch some TV first. Then, I'll prepare dinner for you, okay?""Okay!" As Daniel gave a doting glance at her pretty face, he stroked her head adoringly and turned on the TV for her. After he switched to a child-appropriate channel, he wore an apron and headed for the kitchen. While he was cooking, a gust of cool wind whistled next to him. He didn't bother glancing up as he continued to grill the vegetables and asked, "Did you find anything?" "Yes." Phantom had appeared in the kitchen out of nowhere, wearing a respectful expression, and she began to report all information regarding the Eaglet Project to Daniel in a whisper. The one supporting this project was Finn Weiss from Goldshore, which also involved the Murphy Family. Daniel immediately connected the dots when he heard the information. The orphanage of Northside was wholly entrapped by the Murphys and Finn so that they could abduct the seven or eight children there. Furthermore, Finn was a leader more experienced than the mayor and Henry, and he had students under him working in various positions. However, he didn't get along with the mayor and Henry because they were suddenly transferred from elsewhere while Finn had worked his way up from the very bottom. So, naturally, he couldn't bring himself to defer to people he didn't respect. In addition, based on the information from the investigations, Finn was very innocent, and there weren't any problems in any aspect. Despite that, from the intel given by Henry, Finn was very close with the Four Waves Chamber of Commerce, but he didn't leave any evidence behind, so there was nothing they could do to him. If they removed him by force, that would only ignite a fight between both parties and lead to chaos. That was why the clean-up program initiated by Daniel earlier had no effects on Finn. After Phantom finished her report, it all became clear to Daniel. To put it bluntly, Finn Weiss was the middleman of Goldshore, relying on his students working under him to hinder the mayor and Henry. Still, Daniel didn't want to appear in the forefront because he wanted to pull out all the roots under this huge tree! But if he handed the ax to the mayor or Henry, Finn's students would start a strong resistance, spreading their conspiracy theories and causing utter mayhem in Goldshore. Moreover, Henry wasn't fit to hold this ax. The best way was to find a respectable third party to wield this ax. A suitable candidate instantly popped into his mind when he thought of that.
