Mr. Mysterious's Spontaneous Bride

Chapter 22 Rejected

‘Was there a possibility that I'm really a wealthy man?’ Shawn sighed, feeling both irritated and frustrated. ‘Why couldn't this woman understand gratitude?’ Although Shawn didn't respond, his heavy and exasperated breathing made it clear that he was quite displeased at the moment. Even Ivy, despite her dense and stiff nature, could sense his annoyance. In fact, she realized he might not be entirely at fault. It was possible that she had been too serious and her tone too harsh. Marriage often brought together two individuals with differing personalities. Maintaining open and timely communication was essential for the long-term success of the marriage. After some introspection, Ivy concluded that perhaps she had been too hard on him. After all, his legs were still in a wheelchair. As guilt began to well up inside her, she knew she needed to say something to console him. However, when she opened her mouth to speak, she ended up saying something entirely different, "Mom made a healthy food tonight. Come home early to have some." That was it? Really? Shawn had been waiting for an apology, and that's all he got? "Understood!" he grumbled ungraciously, and then hung up the phone. Two hours later, the special assistant dropped Shawn off at his home. "Um... It was on the way, so I brought Mr. Tate back home," the assistant scratched his head, feeling somewhat embarrassed as he explained. "You've been quite helpful. Thank you," Ivy began to invite him in for dinner, but he vanished with lightning speed. "I have a date with my girlfriend tonight, so I better run." "What a peculiar person," Ivy commented to herself, pushing Shawn inside. Due to the phone call's events, both of them felt awkward, so they silently avoided eye contact with each other. "That Mr. Luke is a bit peculiar," Ivy commented. Shawn's face darkened, "He's afraid of doctors.""..." Ivy found this even stranger. He was an adult, why was he afraid of doctors? "Is he suffering from a hidden ailment?" She inquired. "Yep." "What kind of ailment? Tell him to share his medical records with me; maybe I can help him..." Shawn suddenly looked at her, chuckling in frustration, "Dr. Jones, you're an orthopedic doctor, not a specialist in male health." Can she please remember she's a doctor while also maintaining the awareness of a married woman? She already mentioned that there's an ailment! How can a female doctor chase after a man to check his male health? He was extremely irritated. He loosened his collar to show his displeasure. Seeing Shawn's sudden change in demeanor, Ivy realized he was still upset about what happened today. She thought for a moment and explained, "I'm sorry for what I said earlier. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I just didn't want you to waste money. Please don't be angry." Shawn was taken aback and suddenly felt a hot flush on his ears. He turned his head slightly and cleared his throat. "Who said I'm angry?" "Huh?!" "Shawn, dinner is ready," Emma, carrying a pot of soup, came out of the kitchen, interrupting their conversation. Shawn lifted his lips slightly towards Emma. "I'm coming, Mom." Realizing that she had been played by Shawn, Ivy chased after him. "Shawn, you tricked me!" She caught up at the dining table and found that all the dishes on the table were Shawn's favorite dishes. She pouted, "Mom, isn't this unfair?!" Emma smiled and playfully flicked Ivy's nose. "Haven't you had enough to eat all these years?" Handing a bowl of soup to Shawn, Emma said softly, "Shawn, your grandmother told me that you love these dishes the most. So, I thought I'd prepare them for you." Ivy and Shawn had been busy with their own matters these past two days, and Emma hadn't been idle either. To prevent her from being harassed by Harry again, Ivy had introduced Grandma Winston, who was still traveling, to her. The two immediately hit it off via video chat and decided to meet in person once Grandma Winston returned from her trip."Shawn, my cooking skills may not be as good as your grandmother's, and it might not suit your taste." Emma assumed that he didn't like the meal because he kept his head down and had a quiet explanation. "It's delicious." Shawn smiled and responded, then lifted the bowl to finish the soup. Ivy, who was watching the scene from the sidelines, felt a warm feeling inside. As her mother's mood improved, she decided not to mention the incident with her father being taken away by the police to avoid affecting her mood. After dinner, the three of them chatted in the living room. The lawyer responsible for the divorce case called. Afraid her mother would worry, Ivy falsely claimed that it was a call from her clinic and then went to the balcony. "Dr. Jones, the divorce suit has been rejected," the lawyer said in a somber tone. Ivy took a deep breath. She knew that divorce was difficult, but she hadn't expected to hit a dead end right from the start. "What’s the reason?" "They refused to divorce, claiming that they have a very good emotional life with your mother. The court dismissed our lawsuit with the reason that 'there is no evidence to prove that the feelings between the husband and wife have indeed broken.'" Ivy recalled the surveillance cameras that had been installed in their home. Perhaps the surveillance footage could be useful, so she said, "There have always been surveillance cameras in our house, and there should be evidence of his domestic violence against my mom..." Ivy had installed surveillance cameras in their home right after graduating and starting her first job. The past video footage might have been automatically deleted by the system, but the last time when Harry had been abusive to her mother should still be available. However, the lawyer hesitated and said, "Dr. Jones, we've checked, and in fact, the surveillance camera has never been turned on..." Ivy was taken aback and turned to look at her mother subconsciously. After a while, she shook her head with a wry smile. Back then, her mother was concerned about the electricity costs, and she had inadvertently grown accustomed to keeping the surveillance turned off. Now, they faced a dilemma. Ivy was in a bind, and the lawyer reminded her at this moment, "We need you to provide some more information to attempt to modify the divorce complaint and try again.""Alright, I'll come to your law firm tomorrow morning." However, what Ivy didn't expect was that after this, they filed for divorce three times consecutively, and the court rejected it every time with the same reason. Ivy found this situation highly absurd, but the historical issues within the legal system left no room for immediate action. ***
