Mr. Mysterious's Spontaneous Bride

Chapter 13 Bad Luck

Outside the door, Luke, the personal assistant, heard his boss's low voice and knew that he was angry. He quickly shouted, "Mr. Tate, I'll help you move the heavy items." Shawn with a furrowed brow, glanced at the door, then back at the skeleton in his arms. He maneuvered his wheelchair toward the door and said, "Reach out your hands." Luke obediently extended his hands. Being in Mrs. Tate's private room, he didn't dare to cross any boundaries and when poking his head out, he even closed his eyes, avoiding looking inside. Ivy initially wanted to tell him it wasn't necessary, but seeing the two men playing around, she decided not to say anything. As Shawn placed the skeleton into Luke's hands, the latter let out a small gasp. "It's heavy," he exclaimed, and quickly prepared to pack the belongings. When he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was a skeleton with all its meridians and blood vessels marked out in white with yellow lines, staring right at him as if saying "hi." "Aaahhh!" Shawn firmly said, "Hold well!" and handed the skeleton head to Luke. "Aaahhhhh!" BANG! CLANG! Luke nearly fell over but managed to catch the eerie thing. He was frightened out of his wits and almost threw the humanoid skeleton. But then he felt a chilling shiver run down his spine, a silent warning from his boss. Luke begrudgingly withdrew his attempt to toss the item and silently placed it on the sofa. Ivy peeked out of her room and saw Luke, who looked pale, drenched in cold sweat. She felt guilty and said, "Mr. Luke, you can help my mom instead. I'll pack these things." With a glance back at Shawn, who was pretending to be serious, Luke answered, "O-Okay," Mr. Luke was fine with everything except for his fear of ghosts. Even though he knew the skeleton was just a prop, it was still quite scary. He gulped and rushed over to Mrs. Jones--Emma Livingstone, "Aunt-Auntie, let me help you." "Luke, don't be afraid; they're all fake," Emma scolded the married couple with a glance and comforted Mr. Luke. "When Ivy brought them home earlier, I was scared too, but I got used to it. You'll get used to it too." Mr. Luke choked! Having a boss like Shawn was bad enough, and now there was Dr. Jones, who was just plain bizarre! Unapologetically bizarre! "Shawn, don't learn bad habits from Ivy," Emma scolded Shawn, indulgently. "Exactly," Ivy chimed in. She could see clearly that Shawn was intentionally teasing Mr. Luke. "All right." Although Shawn's face showed no expression, Mr. Luke could tell from that simple ‘All right’ that his boss was in a very good mood after teasing him. Mr. Luke decided not to pay any more attention to it and focused on helping Aunt Emma pack. The mother and daughter had been frugal for many years, and they didn't have many things, so they quickly finished packing. "Mom, please take them to the parking lot first, and I'll wait for the renovation workers for a while," Ivy reassured her mother. This apartment was originally transferred to her mother by her grandmother before Emma’s marriage, and it had always been her mother's pre-marital property. Since they were temporarily moving out, they couldn't let Harry Jones stay in this apartment! "Ivy..." Emma had initially advised her not to be so harsh on her father, but seeing Ivy's determined expression, she silently held back her words. At this moment, Harry entered the room. He was accompanied by two elderly people, Ivy's grandparents, and Harry's distant cousin, Amara. As soon as they entered, all four of them immediately spotted Ivy and cursed in unison, "It's really unlucky to meet you in broad daylight!” But their attention was quickly drawn to the luggage they were carrying. Harry’s eyebrows furrowed deeply, and he immediately scolded Emma, "Who gave you the courage to move?" Harry’s mother sneered, took a seat on the sofa, and started provoking, "Old man, I told you when she married into our family that she wasn't an easy one. She's going to stir up chaos in our family. You and your son didn't believe me. But what's the result now!" With a clap of her hands and a theatrical air of righteousness, she continued, "The fortune teller said that our son has a landlord's fate from birth, and that money would never be an issue for him. But after this woman married into the family, we've been in a complete mess. he has achieved nothing to this day. If you had listened to me earlier, we wouldn't be in this situation!" Emma, who had been oppressed by the Jones family for a long time, turned white as a sheet under the scolding from Mr. Jones and mother, and started to tremble uncontrollably. Ivy released her mother's arm, placing herself in front of her, and replied in a solemn tone, "I will move out with my mom, and in a while, I will contact you to arrange the divorce proceedings." "What?!" Mrs. Jones suddenly tensed up and, pointing at Emma, began to curse her, "She gave birth to this money-draining burden for our family, and she still wants a divorce? Let me tell you, you useless money-draining burden, divorce is not possible. She hasn't given birth to a son for our family; both you and your daughter will have to take care of us until the end of our lives. You can't go anywhere!" Turning around and surveying the empty house, Mrs. Jones emphasized, "Even if you divorce, you can't take this house with you!" Ivy retorted, "This house was left by my grandmother, and it's my mother's pre-marital property. Even in a divorce, it belongs to her!" "You, you really want to drive me crazy, you money-draining burden!" Mrs. Jones was so angry that she clutched her chest, struggling to catch her breath. She slapped her thigh heavily and began to rant, "What kind of karma have we brought upon ourselves to get involved with you and your daughter! You want a divorce, but in our family's village, which family has ever divorced? If a woman dares to divorce, her husband has the right to break her legs!" Jones' family hailed from a rural area in the City, where the notions of passing on the family name and male dominance were deeply rooted. In their view, women were subordinate to men, and divorce and having daughters were considered rebellious and unrighteous acts. Since Ivy was young, she had witnessed daily domestic violence by her father towards her mother. Her grandparents, on the other hand, used various manipulative tactics to gaslight her mother. Her mother had even told her that when she was born, the Jones grandparents had attempted to harm her in the hospital because they believed that only by doing so would their family have another chance to have a son. If it weren't for her Livingston grandmother taking care of her at that time, Ivy would probably have died. Thinking about this, Ivy's disgust deepened. She didn't want to stay any longer and turned to Shawn, saying, "Let's go." "Don't leave yet!"Seeing Shawn when they first entered, Harry Jones had refrained from speaking due to his imposing presence. But as he realized that his parents couldn't successfully intimidate the mother and daughter, he had no choice but to speak up to stop them. "You can leave if you want, but first settle this matter," Harry Jones said. Ivy frowned, asking, "What matter?" Mrs. Jones extended her hand toward Emma, "The ten thousand dollars living expenses, why haven't you handed it over yet?" Harry Jones also pointed to the bruise on his mouth and sternly scolded Ivy, "The father and son at the hospital are going to sue me for compensation. You'd better get me a serious injury assessment, preferably a first-degree disability. If they dare to sue, I'll sue them back and make them lose everything! Damn bastards!" ***
