Everything Stolen, I Left to Become CEO

Chapter 43 The Empty Desk

Looks like she won't be coming down anytime soon. Who knows what the two of them were doing upstairs? Darcy propped her chin on her hand. There's no way they're doing that in the office, right? A wave of nausea hit her. She didn't want to waste any more time and handed a USB drive to Faye. "This has all the client files. I know they were already transferred to you all, but just in case, I made a backup. Give it to Dr. Moss when she comes down." Faye accepted it reluctantly. "Okay, Darcy." Darcy took the signed offboarding form back to Lucy, who gave her the stamped termination certificate. Lucy sighed, "Goodbye, Darcy. See you out there." "See you out there," Darcy replied with a faint smile.Darcy had come quietly, and she left just as quietly. Most colleagues hadn't even noticed before she had finished her paperwork and was walking out of the building. The sky outside was clear and blue, the sun bright. Darcy lifted a hand to shield her eyes, looking into the distance. The sky is vast for the bird to fly; the sea is wide for the fish to leap. Her heart felt lighter than it had in years. As she stepped outside through the revolving door, she ran straight into Rex, Zane's assistant. Rex was startled. "Ms. Gale?" Darcy glanced at him and reminded him calmly, "I've resigned. Just call me Darcy." What? Rex's eyes widened. Re... re... resigned? Was this some kind of joke? He blocked her path, flustered. "But Mr. Vance hasn't approved it! You can't just leave! The company... it can't run without you!""He agreed to my resignation," Darcy said, quietly withdrawing her arm. She seemed completely unruffled. "Thank you for the message you sent me last time. But he and I have broken up. Goodbye." Rex stood there, stunned. So she did get my message. Wait, that's not the point! The point is, what did she just say? Broken up with Mr. Vance? What's going on? Is Mr. Vance really with Dr. Moss now? That would explain why they've been so close lately. Even as a man, Rex couldn't help but think his boss was being... shortsighted. Zora was fine, but Darcy was obviously more capable. She could write code, develop products, and most importantly, she'd brought in half the company's clients. In other words, she'd been supporting all of them. If she left, the company's future, its chances of going public next year... it was all up in the air. That Zora... all she ever talked about with Zane were new technologies and trends. All theory. Dejected, Rex took the elevator to the top floor and knocked on the CEO's office door. Zane opened it himself. Rex handed him the coffee. On the sofa, Zora smiled apologetically, "Thank you, Rex." Zora hadn't slept well last night and had been yawning through their morning meeting. Seeing this, Zane had told Rex to go buy her coffee—a specific brand from a shop two blocks away. Rex had to make the trip himself. "Mr. Vance—" "Zane, shall we continue?" Their voices overlapped. Rex pressed his lips together. He'd been about to tell his boss he'd just run into Darcy downstairs. But Zane, impatient, simply closed the door on him. Well, that's clear enough. When it came to choosing between Zora and Darcy, Zane had made his choice. In that case, there was no point in saying anything. Rex went back to his desk and got to work. ... As dusk settled and the workday neared its end, Zane finally remembered—today was the day Darcy was supposed to come back to work. But he hadn't seen her all day. Yesterday, he'd said he had something to talk to her about. Why hadn't she come to see him? Zane was about to call her, but then stopped. Of course. She's still mad. And she must have found out about Zora by now. After a moment's thought, he decided to go downstairs and find her himself.Zane went down to the sales department. No sign of Darcy. He checked the R&D department. Still no Darcy. In a meeting, maybe? After a month off, she'd have a lot to catch up on. It made sense she'd be holed up in a conference room. He checked each conference room with its semi-transparent glass walls. No Darcy. Did she leave already? He checked his watch. Still half an hour until official quitting time. A flicker of panic shot through him. He immediately pulled out his phone and called Darcy. The phone rang, but no one answered. Then, the automated voice came. "We're sorry, the number you have dialed is not available..." Zane's face darkened. He went back to the top floor and tapped his knuckles on Rex's desk. "Get Darcy to come see me." Rex, who was typing away, looked up, confused. "Mr. Vance... Darcy left."She really did leave early!
