The Second Love
I rested my chin on my hand, staring at Shannon intently. She seemed a bit uneasy and picked up the teacup on the table, took a sip, and coughed lightly. "Why are you staring at me like that? There's nothing wrong with my face." I smiled and replied, "I'm not doing anything, just wanted to see how you're doing." "You've been daydreaming since earlier. I'm just curious about what you're thinking, Shannon. What's on your mind?" "Huh?" Shannon hesitated for a moment, then said, "Nothing, really. I wasn't thinking about anything... I'm just... I'm just hungry. Why is the food taking so long?" Her words were incoherent, and I found it hard to believe her. I pursed my lips and retorted immediately, "You said earlier that you weren't interested in dragon meat, and we just ordered the food. The chef needs time to prepare it." "Shannon, you and..." "It's nothing!" Before I could even mention Benjamin Chance's name, Shannon interrupted me as if she had seen a ghost. Seeing Shannon's abnormal behavior, I became even more certain that something had happened between her and Benjamin Chance that I didn't know about. Suddenly, I thought of the incident where Shannon was drugged and asked Benjamin Chance for help. Could it be that Benjamin Chance caused trouble for Shannon because of this? Taking advantage? Threatening? Many melodramatic thoughts rushed through my mind. But based on what I knew about Benjamin Chance, he didn't seem like that kind of person. And I had to trust Dominic Hartnell's judgment. If Benjamin Chance was really a bad person, they wouldn't have become brothers. The more I thought about it, the more confused I became. It was becoming a mess in my head. Shannon was now so sensitive that I didn't dare to immediately ask her again. It seemed that I could only start investigating from Benjamin Chance's side to figure out the cause and effect. Hmm, I'll ask Dominic Hartnell later. Men are easier to talk to, especially when they have such a close relationship. After making up my mind, I silently observed Shannon again. She was daydreaming again, her eyes unfocused. I sighed inwardly, feeling a sense of unease. And so, because Shannon and I had different thoughts, neither of us spoke again. After waiting for another ten minutes or so, the sushi and udon noodles I ordered were delivered. I picked up a piece of sushi and put it on Shannon's small plate, saying, "Let's eat. You said you were hungry, right?" Shannon absentmindedly responded and started eating. Usually, Shannon and I would chat when we went out to eat risotto, but today it was unusually quiet. While slurping my noodles, I was still thinking about finding Dominic Hartnell to ask about Benjamin Chance. Shannon, on the other hand, was clearly not in the right state of mind. She hadn't finished eating the sushi I had just given her, and she was counting the grains of rice as if in a daze. I shook my head, feeling quite helpless. "Liliana Zanetti..." "Hmm?"When Shannon called my name, I mumbled with a mouthful of noodles. Then Shannon continued, "He said... he wants to marry me." Instinctively, I nodded and replied, "Oh." But three seconds later, my hand holding the fork suddenly stopped, and the noodle I had picked up slipped back into the bowl. "Wait! What did you just say? Marry you? Who wants to marry you?" I widened my eyes, uncertainly asking, "Benjamin Chance? He said he wants to marry you?" Shannon hesitated for a moment but nodded. I was stunned, feeling like my brain couldn't process it all. Now I had lost my appetite and stared at Shannon, asking, "Shannon, are you serious or joking?" "When did you and Benjamin Chance... start?" Shannon poked at the sushi on the plate with her fork, hesitated, and answered softly, "We haven't started." I was confused, not understanding what she meant. "Haven't started? If you haven't started, then why did he say he wants to marry you? What's going on between you two?" Shannon's hand paused for a moment, then she looked up at me and said, "Liliana Zanetti, Benjamin Chance misunderstood." "If you meet him again, just tell him that I don't like him, and I never thought about getting married." "If he wants to get married and have a wife, he should find someone else. Just don't bother me anymore." I frowned at Shannon, feeling that something was not right. "If that's the case, why don't you just talk to Benjamin Chance and clarify things?""Even if he likes you and wants to marry you, if you don't want to, he definitely can't force you. I don't think Benjamin Chance is the type of person who would unreasonably force someone to marry him." Shannon avoided my gaze and after a while, she spoke again, "If you don't want to talk to him, then forget it." "I don't want to eat anymore, Liliana Zanetti. If you're not eating either, I'll take you home." "I'm not eating. Let's go." At this point, who could still have the mood to eat? After settling the bill, Shannon and I left the Japanese restaurant. Outside, Shannon offered to give me a ride again, but I declined. It was convenient for me to take a taxi from here. "It's okay, I'll go back on my own. You should go home too." "Shannon..." I pulled her hand and said word by word, "If you want someone to talk to, you can always find me." "Or if there's anything you can't figure out, you can come to me." "Anyway, Shannon, remember to reach out to me if anything happens. Don't keep it to yourself." I was a bit worried, but I understood Shannon. I couldn't push too hard, so I could only wait and see for now. Shannon smiled at me, seemingly relaxed, and said, "I'm fine, what could possibly happen?" "Today was just an accident, don't overthink it." "If you don't want me to accompany you, then at least remember to call me when you get home. Oh, there's a car, get in quickly." Shannon saw me off in the taxi, and as the car drove away, her figure became smaller and smaller until she disappeared. When I got home and found out that Dominic Hartnell's mother hadn't returned yet, I went straight upstairs to my bedroom.I sent Shannon a WeChat message to let her know I was safe, and then I couldn't wait to call Dominic Hartnell. After the call connected, I called out, "Husband." Dominic Hartnell appeared to be in high spirits, his tone relaxed as he spoke, "Darling, I'm having risotto with Lou. Would you like to speak with him?" I responded, "Let's not concern ourselves with Lou at the moment. Honey, when will you be returning? I require your assistance with something, it's urgent!" Perhaps my sense of urgency influenced him, as Dominic Hartnell's voice immediately turned serious. "What's the matter? Has something occurred?"
