The Second Love

Chapter 257 Surprise Without Joy

Upon receiving the phone call, I was instantly dumbfounded. If it hadn't been for the fact that the incoming number was indeed my mom's mobile number and the voice was hers, I would have suspected that I had encountered a scammer. This doesn't make sense. They just called me yesterday to say that they were preparing to come back. Even with the preparations, it should still take a few more days. How did they come back today after just one night? And why did they come to Lightspring instead of returning to Dellmoor? I held my phone and stupidly looked down at my obviously protruding belly, feeling that everything was not going well. Oh no, if I were to appear in front of my parents with this belly, I'm really afraid they won't be able to handle the shock... "Cough... cough..." I coughed lightly, full of unease, and asked unwillingly, "Mom, are you and Dad at the airport right now? The airport in Lightspring?" On the other end of the phone, my mom burst into laughter, "You silly child, didn't I just tell you? Your dad and I just got off the plane. How about it, surprised? Do you miss us?" Heh heh... heh heh... I don't have joy, only genuine surprise! It seems that the old couple really had a great time on this trip. Looking at the tone of their conversation and the joking delight, even through the phone, I could almost feel deeply moved. I glanced at my small belly again, silently hoping that my parents' happiness would be enough to withstand the surprise I have for them... "Um... well, yeah, of course I miss you guys. But, Mom, didn't you say yesterday that you were preparing to come back? How did you come back so quickly today? I thought you were going to play for a few more days, and why didn't you come back directly to Dellmoor? Why did you come to Lightspring?" "Old man, come over here, I'm calling Lili." I heard my mom calling my dad, and after a few seconds, she answered, "Yeah, we were preparing to come back yesterday. We were at the airport at that time, and today we came back. As for the plane tickets, they were booked by the travel agency." "That's good. Your dad and I bought a lot of souvenirs and gifts for you and Lou. Since we're in Lightspring now, we can give them to you directly, so we don't have to bring them back to Dellmoor. It's much more convenient." "Hey, your dad is sitting right next to me. Do you want to say a few words to him... Never mind, just hurry up and come pick us up. We can catch the risotto, and we can all go eat something delicious together. Let me tell you, it's fun to play outside, but I get cravings. After a while, I still want to eat the food here." "You better come over quickly. Your dad and I are waiting for you at the airport. When we meet, I'll talk to you in detail about this trip. It's incredibly fun."My mom was still in an excited state, talking like a machine gun. I couldn't get a word in, so I had to wait until she finally finished before I had a chance to speak. While my mom was chattering away, I quickly tried to think of a way to respond. I definitely had to meet them, and we had to talk about the situation, but it couldn't be so sudden. At the very least, I had to give a brief explanation before they met Dominic Hartnell. Otherwise, I was afraid my dad would take a big stick and beat him out. This wasn't a small matter of a couple getting back together after a breakup. It was... I got pregnant before marriage, and Dominic Hartnell is the one who got me pregnant. And then, marriage might be a distant possibility. Any of these things could make my dad explode with anger. So, with limited time, I could only come up with a plan to "drag it out," even though it was a bad idea... I had to stall for time. I took several deep breaths and forced myself to calm down as I made up a story: "Mom, it's like this. I have something going on right now, and I can't leave temporarily. I don't know how long it will take." "Here's what we'll do. I'll have Shannon come pick you up later, and you can rest well at the hotel tonight. After all, you've been on a long flight. I... I'll come find you tomorrow morning. Is that okay?" I originally wanted to say I would come later, but after thinking about it, since I had to stall for time anyway, I might as well go tomorrow. Tonight, I could also think things through. My mom didn't seem to doubt my explanation, but she didn't want me to call Shannon either. She and my dad would take a taxi themselves, and they had already booked the hotel in advance. My mom also boasted about the hotel, saying that thanks to this tour, they got a discount voucher for a five-star hotel, 50% off. After settling this matter, I chatted with my dad for a few more minutes, reminding them to rest well tonight, and then hung up the phone. I rubbed my throbbing temples and closed my eyes, feeling a headache coming on. Ah, what should I do? I only have one night to prepare... Should I call Dominic Hartnell and ask him to come with me tomorrow? This idea flashed through my mind like a shooting star and disappeared in an instant. Oh well, I'll just go see my parents by myself first. "Madam, have some risotto... Madam, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell? Headache? Is it a cold?" Chloe's concerned voice brought me back to reality, and I quickly put on a bright smile. "It's nothing... I'm just a bit tired. Let's have the risotto. Oh, Chloe, you don't have to come tomorrow, I'll be going out." Chloe replied, "Oh, alright. Madam, you must be going out with Sir. He's really good to you. I've worked in many households, but I've never seen a husband treat his wife so well."Ever since Chloe informed Dominic Hartnell about his mother unexpectedly showing up, and he rewarded her with an extra month's salary, Chloe has been practically glued to me. Hearing Chloe automatically assume this, I naturally went along with her words to avoid her calling Dominic Hartnell. After finishing the risotto, I promptly sent Chloe away. Honestly, I don't even know when I fell asleep. Although I went to bed early, my mind was in a mess. Although I didn't sleep well at night, I woke up early because I had something on my mind. Since I couldn't sleep anyway, I realized it was a lose-lose situation. Therefore, I decided to get out of bed, prepare myself, and head to the hotel where my parents were staying. Interestingly enough, Dominic Hartnell had already informed me in advance that he would be busy throughout the day with meetings. He wouldn't have any free time until the evening. Otherwise, I was concerned that he might unexpectedly return home and discover my absence. Upon reaching the vicinity of the hotel, I purposely sought out a breakfast shop and purchased the items that my parents usually enjoy eating. It's always beneficial to please them. With a nervous heart, I slowly approached the hotel, taking each step cautiously like an ant. Just as I arrived at the entrance of the hotel, a group of people suddenly approached me, and the person leading them caused me to freeze in place.
