The Second Love
The phone call came from Dominic Hartnell's mother. Taking advantage of Dominic Hartnell's failure to answer the phone, I decisively stood up from the chair and said, "I'll go pour a glass of juice." As soon as I finished speaking, the incessant ringing of the phone, which had been making noise just now, abruptly stopped. I looked at Dominic Hartnell in surprise and asked, "Why did you hang up? Your mom must have something important to tell you." Dominic Hartnell placed his phone on the table, stood up, and blocked my path in front of the table. "What are you doing, getting angry?" I paused for a moment, then laughed and said, "No, why would I be angry? You were talking to your mom, what's there to be angry about?" "Then why did you intentionally walk away?" I hugged Dominic Hartnell and explained with a smile, "Really, I just got thirsty. You always tell me not to overthink things, but it seems like you're the one who shouldn't think too much. You're so sensitive..." Just then, Dominic Hartnell's phone rang again. I quickly pushed him and said, "Look, she's calling again. Hurry up and answer the phone. I'll go pour some juice for you too." But Dominic Hartnell didn't move at all. He just looked at me suspiciously, completely ignoring the continuous ringing. I couldn't help but feel a bit amused and helpless. I pulled on Dominic Hartnell's collar and lowered his head, then kissed his lips twice. "Alright, I'm really not angry. You should answer the phone quickly. Be a good boy and listen." Dominic Hartnell's tense face relaxed, and he pinched my hand. "Then take your time. The kitchen floor is slippery." I nodded with a smile on my face, then passed by Dominic Hartnell and quickly entered the kitchen. With my back turned to Dominic Hartnell, I silently let out a sigh. I wasn't angry, I just simply, involuntarily wanted to avoid... The kitchen was only separated from the risotto hall by a wall. In fragments, I could still hear some of Dominic Hartnell's phone conversation. From the bits and pieces I faintly heard, I couldn't help but silently sympathize with Dominic Hartnell in my heart. Being caught in the middle is truly deserving of pity. I stood in the kitchen for a while before returning to the risotto hall with two freshly poured glasses of juice, just as Dominic Hartnell finished his call. "Is your mom urging you to go back? If so, you can leave first. You've been with me for most of the day. It's time to go back and accompany your mom, especially since she's sick." I sat down next to Dominic Hartnell and handed him a glass of juice. Dominic Hartnell took it but didn't drink. Instead, he placed it on the table and wrapped his arms around me. "She didn't urge me, and I'm not in a rush to go back. It's still early, and I can watch a couple of episodes of a TV show with you before leaving." I turned my head and stared at Dominic Hartnell for a few seconds before decisively grabbing his hand and leading him to the living room. Although I doubted what Dominic Hartnell said about his mom not urging him, since he was willing to spend more time with me, I definitely wouldn't be foolish enough to rush him away. Sitting on the soft couch, I found a comfortable position leaning against Dominic Hartnell. Finally, I resumed the unfinished TV show... Ah, it was perfect. However, I soon realized that I was being too optimistic. It was true that Dominic Hartnell wanted to spend more time with me, and I didn't mind him staying longer, but all of this couldn't withstand the relentless barrage of calls from his mother. An episode of a TV show was about an hour long, and let's highlight this point: I hadn't even finished one episode yet. How long had it been? Fifty minutes? Whatever, in less than an hour, Dominic Hartnell's mom had called him at least seven or eight times. On average, it was about every ten minutes, and that wasn't even enough. I completely lost interest. Every time I tried to watch the TV show, it was interrupted by a phone call. Honestly, if it were someone else, I would have lost my temper a long time ago. Just now, after Dominic Hartnell once again pacified his mom and hung up the phone, I saw him switch his phone to silent mode. With an apologetic kiss, Dominic Hartnell said, "I'll sit with you a little longer." I pushed Dominic Hartnell away speechlessly. "Don't sit anymore. You should go back quickly so I can have some peace." "Liliana Zanetti, my mom..." I waved my hand to stop him from continuing. "Enough, I'm not angry, and I don't blame your mom. She's sick, so it's normal for her to become... clingy. Go back and accompany her. She has called so many times." "I'll watch two more episodes and then go to sleep. Don't worry about me." I patted my belly and continued, "Besides, I have these two little ones to keep me company, oh... and Smokey. So, don't worry." Dominic Hartnell's thin lips had pursed into a thin line. After a few seconds of silent eye contact, he pulled me into his arms. "It's really good to have you... Liliana Zanetti, I love you." I rested my head on Dominic Hartnell's shoulder, widened my eyes, and froze for a few seconds. Suddenly, my eyes started to feel warm. "I love you too." I sniffed and hugged him tightly. Just at this very touching, warm, and romantic moment, a disruptive vibration sound interrupted us. I instantly felt annoyed and couldn't help but laugh as I pinched Dominic Hartnell's waist hard. "Go, go, go, hurry up, enough already." We had only said a few words, and it had been ten minutes already? Seriously, does it have to be so punctual? Maybe it was because I laughed, but Dominic Hartnell seemed relatively calm when he answered the phone this time. "Mom... Hmm, I'm back... Okay." Dominic Hartnell hung up the phone, kissed me a few more times, said he would come back tomorrow, and told me to rest early. Finally, he left.To be honest, I breathed a sigh of relief after seeing him off. At least I wouldn't be tormented by phone calls anymore. I picked up Smokey, who had been squatting by the sofa, and turned on the TV show again. Finally, I comfortably leaned against the large cushion. This is the way it should be. Finally, I can watch a TV show properly. Overall, ignoring some unsatisfactory aspects, I had a very pleasant day today. With a good mood, the quality of sleep naturally improved, and I slept soundly until dawn. In the following days, Dominic Hartnell made time to visit me every day and at least accompany me for a meal of risotto. Therefore, despite not living here, I didn't really feel much of a difference. During this time, I received a call from my mom. The elderly couple who had been having a great time were getting ready to return. However, my mom called me at night when I was feeling a bit sleepy, so we didn't chat for long. The next day, when I woke up, I thought they still had a few more days before returning, so I didn't hurry to call and ask for the specific time. However, in the evening, I received another call from my mom, asking me to pick them up at the airport.
