The Second Love
Accompanying Shannon was Grace Calhoun, another comic artist working with Shannon. I met Grace after Shannon became my editor, so one could consider Grace and me, among others, to be co-workers. Still, since Shannon did not mention anything about Grace tagging along beforehand, I was surprised by the uninvited guest. It would be rude of me to turn Grace away then, so I had no choice but to invite both of them in with a smile. Although I had known Grace for a few years, we never talked about anything other than work-related stuff. I basically knew nothing personal about my co-worker. Slightly puzzled, I shot a look at Shannon, signaling her to give me some hint behind the visit of her plus-one. However, I decided to suppress my curiosity and leave the woman alone after noticing how awkward and helpless she seemed. “What would you guys like? Juice? Soda? Or maybe just a glass of water?” Like a proper host, I invited the two to make themselves at home. “I'm good. You don't have to get me anything,” responded Grace politely. On the other hand, Shannon jumped up from the couch and came over to hold my arm. “Let's see what you have in the fridge. Do you have anything to eat? I'm starving!” Because of my pregnancy, I was always hungry. That was why Dominic had already filled the fridge to the brim with all kinds of snacks. Most of them were healthy snacks for women with a bun in the oven. I had no problem with Shannon wanting something to munch on. In fact, I wanted to take the opportunity to question her about bringing Grace along with her. After reminding Grace again to make herself comfortable, I went into the kitchen with Shannon. Then, I peeked at Grace and waited until she was occupied with her phone before speaking to Shannon in hushed tones. “So what do you want to eat? Yogurt? Fruits? I have tons of snacks here, so take whatever you want. We can have dinner together later.” I took some snacks out after rummaging through the fridge. “Fruits will do. I'm actually not that hungry; I just wanted to talk to you in private for a minute.” I then grabbed some fruits, filled a bowl with water, and soaked them inside. “So do I. Why did you bring Grace with you? Sure, she's no stranger to me, but we can't really talk freely with her around, can we?” Shannon let out a sigh in response. “It's not like I wanted to. She overheard my conversation with the guys at Flash Media, so she asked me to let her take your place. Grace's not stupid, you know? She knows a golden opportunity when she sees one. Or rather, when she hears one. I told her that I'd think about it, and she was fine with it. But just when I was about to leave the office, she asked me where I was going. I swear I must've hit my head or something last night because I told her that I was going to visit you. So... Here we are.” “It seems you did hit your head pretty hard. Did it not occur to you that you could've just told her no when she asked to come along?” I glared at her. “I would've done that if it were somebody else, but I've known Grace for so long. Besides, she just wants to convince you that she has what it takes to carry on your work. I think she's the right person too. Just talk to her, okay? I'm sure she's not going to stay long.” With that, I did not know how else to respond to Shannon. It was not like I had any other choice. Although I did not have anything against Grace, it was uncomfortable for me to have anyone other than a close friend in the house. The fact that the house belonged to Dominic only made it more uncomfortable. Hence, I decided to get it over with as soon as possible so that I could talk to Shannon alone. After Shannon was done preparing the fruits, we quickly returned to the living room so as to not leave Grace alone for too long. Since Grace and I were not that close, I reminded Shannon not to mention my pregnancy. I did not need everyone to know that I was pregnant. Unexpectedly though, Dominic came home before the three of us could even get down to business. That was the first day he returned to work at his office after I was discharged, which was why I invited Shannon over on the same day. The two did not exactly see eye to eye, so I thought it was best to prevent them from being in the same room. I would not know who to side with if they started arguing. It had been quite a while since Dominic last went to his office, so I was sure that he would be buried with work. I thought he would come home late, but apparently, I was wrong. Just like me, Shannon and Grace were also surprised when Dominic appeared. After nodding politely at the two, the man went straight into the bedroom, so I excused myself and followed suit. Half-naked, Dominic turned around when I entered the bedroom. He then embraced me before sitting me down by the bedside. “I thought you had to work late today. You're done for the day already?” “Don't you want me to come home early? I got off work early so that I could keep you company at home,” answered Dominic as he continued to unbutton his shirt. My eyes were glued to the man's body that had been stripped down to a piece of underwear. Even though I had already seen and touched it thousands of times, I was still smitten with the sight of it nonetheless. Dominic's body was as chiseled as a professional athlete. Just when I was about to drool over him, Dominic covered himself up with light blue loungewear and ruined the show for me.The man then smirked at me before giving me a sloppy kiss. “I hope you enjoyed the show because that's all you're going to get for now.” In response, I scowled at the man and pinched his nipple. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not as desperate as you think I am. Besides, I'm not a pervert like you!” Dominic grabbed me by the hand and whispered into my ear in his deep voice, “Your action seems to suggest otherwise.” I then quickly withdrew my hand from the man's body. “Do you ever think about anything else? I'm out of here.” “Let's not keep our guests waiting,” suggested Dominic after grabbing me by the wrist once again. With that, I stared at the man in disbelief. He can't be serious, can he? When we returned to the living room, Dominic sat me down on the couch before sitting down himself. “Why don't the two of you join us for dinner?”That was not how I imagined the evening would go because Grace was not supposed to join us for dinner. At that point, there was nothing I could say to prevent Grace from staying. All I could do was pray for her to turn Dominic down, but unfortunately, my prayer went unanswered in the end. “I hope it's not too much of a trouble,” replied Grace courteously. I wanted so badly to tell her then that it would indeed be too much of a trouble for me.
