The Second Love
Seeing how nervous Dominic was, I held his arm too and flashed him a comforting smile. “I just couldn't wait to see you. Besides, I'm only pregnant, not crippled. It's not like I'll fall and break myself. I can still walk on my own perfectly fine. Even the doctor reminded me to take a short walk after a meal. I'm fine. Relax.” After that, Dominic seemed a little more relaxed but was still insistent. “Just be good and listen to me, okay?” “Okay, I hear you. But since it's still early, why don't we go shopping?” I tried to convince Dominic with my brightest smile. After being cooped up in the hospital all day, I wanted nothing more than to spend time outside at my leisure. In response, Dominic pulled a long face. “I thought we just agreed to listen to me? What did I say about not moving around?” “Oh, come on! It's just for a little while. I need a breath of fresh air. That can't be bad for a pregnant lady, right? Come on. Let's go.” Just so I could convince the man, I showed him my puppy-dog eyes and deployed every form of kittenish action to the best of my capability. Even though I was a grown woman, I did not feel embarrassed by my cringey actions. After all, we had known each other for a long time, and I was also pregnant. Eventually, Dominic gave in to my request, even though he did not get any less tense during our walk. As if I was made of glass, the man kept his arm around me the whole time in fear that I would fall. I did not actually have anything in mind that I wanted to shop for at the moment; I just wanted to walk around but ended up in a baby store somehow. As soon as I stepped into the store, every product on the shelves seemed to be calling to me. The fact that I was served by an incredibly charismatic salesperson only worsened my itch to go on a shopping spree. It did not matter that I had not been told of my babies' gender. I bought two sets of clothes for both genders anyway. Even though I was unsure what toys my baby would like, I decided to buy those that looked fun to me. Hey, I'll be the one giving birth to the babies, so I'm pretty sure they are going to agree with my choices. Since I already knew I was bearing a pair of twins, I was convinced that I could not go wrong with buying a twin-seat stroller. Throughout my shopping spree, Dominic made no comment, nor did he stop me. When I was finally done sweeping through the store, he generously took his credit card out and paid for my haul. The salesperson seemed even more elated than I was when we made the purchases. With the amount of stuff we bought, it was a good thing that I bought a stroller to carry everything for us, though Dominic would be too occupied to support me if he had to push the stroller. I told him that I could push it instead, but he would not let me.In the end, Dominic decided to delegate that task to Calvin. With Calvin and the stroller behind me, I held on to Dominic's arm once again and begged the man to let me shop around elsewhere. Of course, he was unwilling at first, but eventually, the man caved, just like before. Since I had not gone shopping for a while, it was an absolute delight going from store to store. All the while, Dominic showed no sign of impatience as he escorted me into every shop I pointed my finger at. Suddenly, I noticed a rare kind of store that focused on selling maternity wear only. I had visited their website before, but their products were even more impressive when I could actually feel the material in my hands. Holding a dress in each hand, I could not decide which one to go for, so I decided to inquire of Dominic. “This one? Or this one?” The huge store had a lounge near the entrance, but Dominic still followed closely behind me and refused to leave my side. Dominic was not the only husband in the store keeping their wife company, but I could not help feeling proud that, as far as I could see, he was the most attractive one there. Standing just next to me, a helpful salesperson provided a much-appreciated comment. “Your wife has fair skin, sir, so I believe both of these dresses would suit her well.” I agreed with the salesperson but thought it would be a waste to buy both dresses. After all, my belly would only grow bigger, and I would have to buy new ones by then. Dominic, who did not share my sentiment, took a close look at the dresses before stating, “We'll take both of them since you like them.” Although I was happy about the decision, I still felt like rolling my eyes at him. I asked for your opinion in vain then. “Shall I pack them up for you, ma'am?” inquired the salesperson excitedly.“Those look nice too. I think I'll shop around a little while longer,” I answered hesitantly after looking around the store. Fortunately, the salesperson did not seem upset with my disappointing answer, which was expected since the dresses here were pretty high-end. Even though I intended to take my sweet time browsing through the dresses, Dominic was somewhat displeased by the notion. “Which other dresses do you like? We'll take them all. There's no need to dither.” Then, he took all the dresses I had picked up and passed them to the salesperson. “Ring them up. I'll pay for them at the counter later.” With that, the salesperson smiled from ear to ear. “No problem at all, sir!” After the salesperson walked away, I pinched Dominic's waist. “Just because you have money doesn't mean you have to splurge it like that.” “You like those dresses, don't you? Then we're buying them. Don't worry. I can afford to give my wife the best.” I had to admit that Dominic certainly had me swooning over him with those words. Even the other women around us started complaining to their husbands. “Look at how generous her husband is! You're an embarrassment. Do you know that?” I knew it was vain of me, but I could not help feeling good about being envied. “Wife? Oh, please. That's not who I am to you, legally speaking.” Still, I could not deny the fact that Dominic would make a great husband. Instead of getting upset by what I said, the man caressed my waist and kissed me on the lips. “It's only a matter of time, my wife. It's inevitable.” In an instant, my face turned bright red because of the public display of affection. “Stop it! People are watching us!” Dominic smiled devilishly at me before responding, “It's time to go back. I've let you shop enough for today, so you should be satisfied by now.” Even though I still wanted to shop around a while longer, I knew the man had indulged me for long enough. After paying for the dresses and meeting up with Calvin, we finally returned to the hospital. When I awoke the next day, we went straight back to Lightspring. As soon as we arrived, Dominic brought me to the high-rise apartment and told me I could leave my stuff behind at my old apartment and that he would get me new ones. After resting for two days, I invited Shannon over to the apartment because Dominic forbade me from going out. He thought I should take some more proper rest after the long journey back here. When Shannon showed up at my apartment, she was not alone. I knew the person who stood next to her, but we were not close.
