The Second Love
I felt distressed upon seeing Dominic's reaction. What does he mean by that shocked expression? It's fine if you're unwilling to acknowledge our child. However, looking at me in disbelief as if I've bribed the doctor to deceive you is crossing the line! Irked, I declared, “You're not my baby's biological father. Don't worry. Even if you're unwilling to accept him, others do!” Surprisingly, he did not utter a word but stared intently at me instead, leaving me at a loss. It was getting irritating. Hence, I turned my head away, rolled over, and covered myself with the duvet. If not for the doctor advising me to rest in bed, I would have grabbed a stick to chase him out. In truth, I was pretty angry at that moment. However, after a long exhausting day, I was worn out. The nap earlier did not seem to help much. As the room was completely silent, my eyelids became heavy, and I fell asleep very soon. I rarely dreamed. Even if I did, I could hardly remember the events. Surprisingly, I could remember my dream vividly this time. In it, I was taking care of a child. I played with them and monitored their study. It was blissful and enrapturing. For a moment, Dominic was unimportant anymore as I solely wanted to have my baby by my side. The dream ended as I opened my eyes. However, the events were still replaying vividly in my head, as though they were real. Before, I was hesitant about having a baby. Fortunately, this dream had dispelled my concern. I had decided that with or without Dominic, I would give birth to the child. After all the incidents, my baby is still alive. It must be eager to witness the world with its own eyes. Although it was still too tiny to be felt and respond to my fondness, I could not hold back my urge to caress my belly. Smiling, I murmured, “Baby, don't worry. I will keep you and nurture you. Don't be sad even if you don't have a dad because you have your mom, grandpa, grandma, and uncle by your side. Now, you need to stay in my belly for full nine months and be born healthily.” It was such an indescribable feeling. Only now did I understand a mother's love. Exhilarated, I continued murmuring to him as I caressed my belly, all the while smiling. Suddenly, a voice interrupted my blissful conversation with my child. “You're up now. I bet you're hungry. I got you some bread and milk. You should eat some since you haven't eaten for at least ten hours.” A shadow was cast upon me. I raised my head only to see Dominic. As I was immersed in my conversation with the baby, I did not notice his approach. Sadly, upon seeing him, my mood immediately worsened. “I'm not hungry.”Unexpectedly, Dominic acted differently from yesterday. Wearing a loving expression on his face, he sat beside my bed and put down the food. With a tender voice, he said, “It's fine if you're still mad at me. However, you need to fill your stomach to have the energy to continue being mad at me, right? Also, think about your child. Do you want to starve them?” What? Is this truly Dominic? Why is he so different from yesterday? Perplexed, I asked, “Dominic, did you knock your head these two days?” Like an even-tempered man, he smiled gently instead. Then, he brought the carton of milk and inched it toward my mouth. “Have some. The doctor said you can't starve yourself right now, but you shouldn't consume too much at once too. It's better to break the meal into smaller portions. By the way, I specially bought this milk for you. They said that it's good for pregnant women.” Before this, I was furious at Dominic for being apathetic toward my baby, but now that he abruptly became affectionate, it was uncanny. Seeing the warm carton of milk, I sealed my lips and pushed it away. Unless we talked things through, I would have no appetite to eat or drink. Stunned by my rejection, Dominic stared blankly at me for a while. Only then did he put away the carton of milk and apologize, “Liliana, I'm sorry for what happened yesterday. I shouldn't have acted impulsively. To be honest, I was blinded by my rage, hence hurting you and our child unintentionally.” I kept quiet. Although he had admitted his faults, the infuriating incident that happened yesterday could not be erased. Furthermore, he looked as if he refused to accept the child yesterday. I could not fathom what made him change his stance abruptly over the night. “Dominic, we're adults now. You don't need to feel burdened by our child because I can take care of him without you. If you dislike this baby, you can tell me honestly. I never intend to chain you down with this child.” As soon as the words left my lips, the expression on his face froze. He then immediately drew closer and embraced me. “I love you! I love both you and our child! Liliana, I'm sorry. It was all my fault because I've misunderstood you.” He paused and promised desperately, “Liliana, please marry me. Have faith in me. I will build a warm and loving house with you and our child. I will dote on and take care of you two forever!” His grasp tightened as he finished his proposal. As I was leaning against his chest, I could hear his pounding heart clearly, aside from his earnest vow. What a magical moment it was! My rage abated miraculously. However, I was skeptical about marriage as the issues about our families were a major concern. Now that I was in his arms, I stopped struggling and merely sighed. “Dominic, let's not talk about this for now.”Before this, I had already thought our relationship was a mess, and at that moment, it was akin to a tangled ball of yarn. My utmost priority would be to wait till the child was stable, at least after the fifth month of my pregnancy. As for the rest, I thought we should put it aside and deal with it later. Finally, he released me. He gazed intently at me for some time and fondly pecked my forehead after. “You should start eating the food. It's getting cold.” This time, I obediently let him feed me. In between the small pieces of bread, he would hold the milk carton up to give me a sip. Upon seeing me finish the food, he put away the trash, gently grabbed my hand, and coaxed, “Get some sleep first. I need to head back to the hotel. Don't worry. I'll come back shortly.” I nodded and pondered for a moment before saying, “You don't need to rush here. I'm fine now. You didn't have any sleep last night, so you should rest properly.”My words were said out of goodwill. After all, Dominic had boarded a long-distance flight and immediately went for a social event. Later, he even took me to the hospital. His body would not be able to take it without rest. However, Dominic instantly gloomed and said petulantly, “Liliana, do you still refuse to forgive me? You still don't want to see me?” His sudden change of expression took me aback. What's happening? A six feet tall man pouting at me? Also, I was being considerate. Why didn't you get it?
