The Second Love
There were too many people at the night market. Nicholas was pulling me along while he ran. When I turned back, there was no sight of Jake and Scarlett. I looked at Nicholas running happily in front of me and felt perplexed. What is he up to? When Nicholas finally stopped running, I punched him twice lightly before I could even catch my breath. “Why did you run? Jake is probably raging right now! Also, don't you know that you are very famous? If any fan recognizes you, I won't be able to handle it.” Nicholas pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and said slyly, “What are you scared of? It is already so late, and there are so many people here. Look at my appearance now. How can anyone recognize me? As for Jake... Don't worry about him. I will make it up to him later.” I did not know what to say as I looked at Nicholas' smug expression. After a while, I finally force out these words from my tightly clenched teeth. “Nicholas, I am really afraid!” He was not angry at all. Instead, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me along. “This is not the main road. Not many people will pass by. Don't worry.” This was the truth as we did not see anyone, although we had stood in the middle of the road and talked for a while. It seemed safer than the main road as it was so crowded over there. “Can you call Jake and tell him—” Before I could finish my sentence, my phone started ringing. Jake was already calling me. “Hello...” “Don't say hello! Y-Y-You! Where are the two of you? Where did you kidnap our—” My forehead creased. I had enough of this. “Take it. You can tell him.” I handed the phone to Nicholas in displeasure. Kidnap? How do I kidnap a grown man likeNicholas? “Jake. Yeah, I'm fine. You can go back with Scarlett first. I'll return later with Liliana. Bye.” I widened my eyes in disbelief. “Did you just dismiss him? He's not gonna cry, is he?” “No, he won't. He only knows how to whine and pretend to be pitiful.” Suddenly, an image of Jake hugging Nicholas's leg flashed across my mind and I could not help but laugh. It looks like such a scene could happen. “Let's go. You can laugh as we walk.” “Where are we going? There are only old buildings here. Do you have relatives staying here? But it's too late to go to your relative's house right now.” Nicholas did not look at me but held my hand as we continued walking. His tone was light as he said, “I lived here for a few years when I was young.” “Are you serious?” I was shocked. He tilted his head, and there was a playful smile on his face. “Of course. Nothing much has changed here. It still looks the same.” He slowed down as he explained how each part of this neighborhood was different from his childhood. He also told me about some interesting experiences that he had while living there. Seeing that Nicholas was immersed in his stories, I finally understood why he wanted to come here late at night. He probably wanted to relive the good old days of his childhood. After all, it would be inconvenient for him to do this during the day as he was so famous. As I listened to his childhood stories, I did not notice how he walked through the maze of the alleyways. When I finally came back to my senses, we were already standing outside the night market, and we could hear the vendors hawking behind us. I let out a long sigh of relief. Luckily, nothing went wrong. I did not have any appetite to eat anymore and only wanted to return to the hotel. “Shall we head back? It's getting late.” I was waiting for his reply when a black shadow appeared out of nowhere and grabbed Nicholas. I was momentarily stunned. What happened? Did some fan recognize him? “Nicholas! Nic! Nicky! You scared me to death! I told you not to come out and you wouldn't listen to me. You even ran away! Don't you know how worried I am?” I released the breath that I didn't realize I was holding upon hearing a whiny voice. It was Jake. “I am fine, Jake. Let go of me.” Nicholas sounded helpless as he pushed Jake away. “I was worried about you!” Jake grumbled. It was not the first time I had seen Jake being like this, but it was still funny. “Where's Scarlett? Didn't I ask the both of you to return first?” Nicholas changed the subject and did not respond to Jake. Jake replied in a voice whinier than before, “Letty is waiting in the car. How could we leave without you? I won't allow this. Letty thinks so too.” I wanted to continue watching them, but I realized that more people were looking over. “Let's leave quickly before someone finds out.” Jake glanced at me and snorted coldly. However, he still listened to me and pulled Nicholas quickly toward the road. I touched my nose and felt wronged. It was Nicholas who pulled me away. Getting into the car, I saw Scarlett heave a sigh of relief when she saw Nicholas. I returned to my room after bidding them farewell. Then, I took a hot bath before falling asleep. Hunger woke me up the next day. As I looked for my phone to look at the time, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to take back my phone after letting Nicholas answer the call. I quickly showered and decided to find Nicholas to take back my phone before eating breakfast. However, right after I left my room, I was pulled away by the people from the film crew to visit the filming set together. Since I was here for work, I could only follow them. When I reached the set, I saw Nicholas and Scarlett talking to the director. Sluggishly, I looked for a place to sit. I had no energy as I was rather hungry. Not long after, Nicholas walked toward me with a bag of buns and a cup of hot chocolate. “Have you had your breakfast? You can eat this if you haven't.”My eyes brightened. “Nicholas, your buns came just in time.” Nicholas shook his head as he smiled. “Oh, here's your phone.” “Put it on top of my leg.” I was holding a bag of buns in one hand and a cup of hot chocolate in the other one, so I could not take the phone. Hearing that, he placed the phone on my leg and said, “Liliana, thank you.” I glanced at him, puzzled at his words. Why did he suddenly thank me?
