The Second Love
I discreetly let out a long breath. I closed the door so quickly earlier. How did he manage to notice me? Strangely though, ever since we broke up, I see him almost every day now. Is this fate bring us together? Ew! I don't want to have anything to do with him. If he keeps appearing in front of me, when can I ever forget him? But why do I feel guilty now? Even if Dominic isn't happy that I'm meeting Nicholas, we've already broken up. I can see whoever I want freely. Why should I be afraid of him? Although I thought that way, I could not help feeling nervous when I saw Dominic standing nearby, his face as black as thunder. My hand trembled, and I almost dropped the thermal container. Luckily, Nicholas held onto my wrist quickly and stabilized my hand. Otherwise, the soup would have spilled on me. At that moment, it did not occur to me why someone whose hand was injured and required my help to eat could move so swiftly. “Be careful. Give me the soup. Did you burn yourself?” Hearing his thread of questions laced with worry, I released my grip and let him take the container from me. Then, I shook my head. “It's okay. It wasn't hot.” After answering him, I noticed that he was still holding my hand, so I retracted my hand out of reflex. As soon as I did so, I felt that my action was too excessive. This is so embarrassing. It's not like Dominic can do anything even if he witnessed it. I was abashed to meet Nicholas' eyes. Fortunately, he was even-tempered and thoughtful. He bore no mind to my overreaction earlier and even handed me a piece of tissue paper to wipe my hands. At the same time, he greeted Dominic, “Mr. Hartnell, I haven't seen you for some time. How are you recently?”He was very gentle, but the latter answered offhandedly, “None of your business.” Dominic always harbored a sense of hostility toward Nicholas. I did not wish to see him be infuriated, so I interrupted, “I saw Camille earlier. How is she?” Dominic asked coldly, “Do you care about her a lot?” My words got stuck in my throat, and I felt furious. What's wrong with him? Must he sound so rude? “Well, I don't really care, and it's none of my business.” I paused before continuing, “Then why are you here? Is there anything you need?” Nothing was wrong with what I said, but Dominic exploded with anger. “Can't I come here? Or did my presence here disturb your mood in feeding each other?” I was speechless, feeling that his anger toward me was unwarranted. When did we feed each other?I did not know how to respond and felt like whatever explanation I offered would not seem right. At that moment, Nicholas said calmly, “Mr. Hartnell, I welcome your visit, but it doesn't seem quite right for you to be losing your temper here.” Dominic ignored him. Instead, he walked closer, grabbed my hand, and wanted to pull me toward the door. However, that did not happen as Nicholas held onto my other hand. What is happening? Nicholas' face darkened as he said harshly, “Liliana is here to visit me.” The other man stared at him coldly and responded curtly, “So what? I'm bringing her away now.” I was dumbfounded. Do they really have to behave this way? Can't we just sit down and talk calmly? Why must they be shooting daggers at each other? I knew Dominic was always on edge when facing Nicholas, but somehow, the latter looked quite imposing now too. Feeling anxious from being stuck in between them, I tried to ease the tension. “Guys, calm down. Let's communicate calmly. Let's not fight, and don't be angry.” Even after what I said, the tension between them remained the same. Instead, they turned to look at me. Glaring at me, Dominic asked in a threatening voice, “Are you following me out or not?” Nicholas smiled warmly. “Liliana, ignore him. Don't worry; I'm here for you.” I took turns looking at them and remained silent for a moment before making my decision. Since we had broken up, there was no need for any entanglements with each other. “Dominic, I purposely came to visit Nicholas today. If there's nothing else, you can leave first. Or is there something you want to say to me? You can say it here. I believe there is nothing between us that we can't tell others.” Dominic's expression darkened further, his eyes gleaming coldly. Nicholas' voice rang out again. “Mr. Hartnell, Liliana has made herself clear. Please let go of her.” Dominic looked at me intently for some time. All of a sudden, he squeezed my hand. “Liliana, I will be sending Camille back to Anglandur a few days later. She needs to receive treatment there. Don't worry too much. I'm just sending her back. As my parents will also be going back, we will be celebrating Christmas there, so I'll only be back after New Year's. When I'm away, you can ponder over the issue calmly. I hope you will think things through by the time I return.” As soon as he finished his sentence, he lifted my chin and caught me off-guard by kissing me. The kiss did not last long, but it was gentle and tender. He pulled away and caressed my lips. “Be good and wait for me to come back, and I hope you won't disappoint me.” Then, he let go of my hand and left the room. My mind went completely blank. It was partly due to his kiss and partly due to what he said. Wait for his return? What happens after that? And what does he want me to think about? Wait, no. I'm concerned if Dominic has lost his mind. Can't he just say what he wanted to? Why must he kiss me? Moreover, Nicholas is around! Although I'm turning thirty soon, I'd still feel embarrassed. Argh! I feel so uncomfortable. “Liliana...” I jolted when Nicholas called me. My face felt warm, and I was blushing. “Er... I... Haha. Let's continue eating.” “It's all right. I'm full.” While speaking, Nicholas took the container that I had just picked up and placed it back on the bedside table. Both of us fell silent as if we had agreed upon it.I sighed. It's all Dominic's fault! Look at how awkward it is now. “You... Rest well, then. I'll head over to visit Mrs. Scott.” It was better if I left so that it would not be uncomfortable for both of us. However, as soon as I stood up, Nicholas held my hand again.
