The Second Love

Chapter 204 Sober Night

Usually, only big news would make Shannon so agitated. I was also interested in scandals, but Shannon was being unusually restless. She had just sent me the message to get me to go on Twitter and was already bombarding me with incessant messages asking whether I had seen it yet. I ignored her and quit WhatsApp before I opened up Twitter. Then, I instantly found the trending topic. The headline of the hot topic was: The match made in heaven is on the verge of a breakup. The marriage of the rich families is ending in naught. I thought that Shannon was just being overly dramatic. Every morning, I would wake up to the news of people announcing their relationship to the public and all sorts of divorce lawsuits. Those kinds of news were very common. However, after reading the content, I finally understood why Shannon got that agitated. I quickly read through the article and found it extremely laughable and ironic. They had announced the engagement in a high-profile manner a while ago. After such a short period of time, they have canceled the engagement? It has become such a scandal now. Are they treating this as a game? Shannon was still sending messages to me on WhatsApp. Hence, I opened up WhatsApp and replied: I just read it. After that, Shannon immediately responded: What do you think? What are Dominic and Camille up to now? Are they doing this just for fun? They canceled the engagement just like that. I texted: I don't care. It has nothing to do with me. Moreover, if you had told me that the news was related to him, I wouldn't even look at it. Less than a minute later, I received another message from Shannon. It read: Um... Are you coming back the day after tomorrow? Let's go out for a drink. I recently discovered a nice place for food and drinks. Since Shannon had changed the subject, I went with the flow and accepted the invitation.Later, Nicholas went on WhatsApp as well. Hence, Shannon and I moved to the group chat and continued with a few casual chats before ending the conversation. However, I was clearly lying that the news did not affect me. I could not sleep well that night. The next morning, Mom even thought that I was sick because of my bad complexion. I did not know how to explain my condition to her. Thus, I made up an excuse and told her that I stayed up late to watch a television show. After staying at home for two days, I returned to Lightspring. While I was on my way back, Shannon phoned me to remind me about meeting up at night later. Since it was not too late when I arrived at Lightspring, I knew that Dominic was still working at his office. Hence, I hailed a taxi and rushed toward his place. My things are still there. I'd better go get them now. Otherwise, those things would be an eyesore to someone else. As expected, there was no one in Dominic's house. However, I realized the furniture there was covered in a layer of dust, as though no one was staying there currently. It's none of my business. He has more than one house anyway. He can stay wherever he wants. Hurriedly, I packed all my things and returned to my tiny rented house. Deep down, I felt relieved that I did not get rid of the house back then. After tidying the things at home, I realized that it was almost time to meet Shannon. That night, I drank a lot, probably because I had been caught up in various nasty situations recently. Shannon drank with me as well. While eating some grilled meat, we had already drunk half a dozen cans of beer. After we finished eating, we bought some more food and also two dozen beers from a convenience store. Initially, Shannon wanted to continue drinking at a karaoke place, but I rejected the idea. It's too noisy in there. I just want to find a quiet place with fewer people where I can vent my emotions and have fun at.With that in mind, I brought Shannon to the riverside. Although I was shivering in the cold breeze as we sat by the river, I enjoyed myself while we talked about life and drank beer. At that point, I was wondering why I was not drunk yet. I've drunk so much tonight. I'm not even drunk yet, but Shannon is already tipsy. She's beginning to blabber nonsense now. Since I was not feeling tipsy at all, I glanced at the four cans of beer beside me. I proceeded to drink all of them; one can at a time. I wanted to get drunk, but it seems like the more I drink, the soberer I get. Upon seeing Shannon, who was on the brink of falling asleep on my shoulder, I sighed and helped her to her feet. We can't just stay here for the night. It's too cold here. After helping Shannon up, I was prepared to call for a taxi with my phone. When I opened up the app, Shannon's phone started ringing. I ignored it at first. However, it continued ringing while we waited for a taxi to be available. It's so late at night. It must be an important phone call for it to ring so many times. When the phone rings again, I'll just answer it. However, I was stunned for a bit when I saw the caller ID. It showed: The biggest jerk of the entire universe. I figured that it was Shannon's enemy, and I was certain that the latter disliked the person who was calling. Nonetheless, I was even more taken aback after answering the phone call. The person calling was Benjamin. Moreover, I did not understand why he sounded so mad. Upon answering the call, he started interrogating me about Shannon's whereabouts. When Benjamin realized that the person on the other end of the line was me, he calmed down in an instant. He then ordered sternly for Shannon and me to wait for him at the riverside before hanging up. I was at a loss, but since I had not called for a taxi yet and there was a driver coming to pick us up for free, I decided to wait for Benjamin obediently. Twenty minutes later, Benjamin finally arrived. I was infuriated when I found out that he was not planning to send me home. He took Shannon away and told me to continue waiting as he had called for a ride to come and get me. Watching Benjamin's car drove off, I was thoroughly enraged. Birds of a feather flock together! Dominic is a jerk, so are his friends! Although Benjamin told me that he had called for a ride for me, I was not certain if it was true. I could only open up the app again to find some transportation. Before I could call for a taxi, a car pulled over in front of me. I recognized that car—it was Dominic's car. I shouldn't have answered that stupid call! When I was about to walk past the car, I heard Calvin's voice. Hence, I immediately came to a halt.“Ms. Zanetti, please stop Mr. Hartnell. He can't keep drinking like this.”
