The Second Love
Xenia grunted awkwardly. Instead of replying to our question, she changed the topic instead. “The two of you didn't spend Valentine's Day of our sophomore year together, did you?” I was stunned at how certain Xenia was of her words. Indeed, we didn't spend that particular Valentine's Day together. However, I was puzzled as to how she knew. “During that time, my grandma passed away suddenly. Hence, I went home for the funeral and stayed there for a few days before returning to school.” Nodding, Xenia added, “Aren't you curious as to how I know about that?” Before I could ask her, she continued, “That's because, on Valentine's Day, I saw our campus hunk here together with Camille. Both of you were checking into a hotel.”Immediately, I turned and gave Dominic a stupefied look. Not only was I not aware of the matter, neither Dominic nor Camille had mentioned it to me. Despite being infuriated, I still kept my cool. Nevertheless, I hissed, “My dear campus hunk, shouldn't you explain yourself?” Dominic frowned. “I left right after I sent her there.” “Mmm-hmm. That's true, as I bore witness to it.” Barely hiding her laughter, Xenia joked, “Hmm... Between entering and leaving, it took him ten minutes. I'm sure our campus hunk would have needed a lot more time than that.” I didn't respond other than scrutinizing Dominic in silence. This isn't about how long he stayed in there. The real question is, why was he with Camille on Valentine's Day? Feeling dissatisfied, I complained, “Even if I wasn't around, it didn't mean that you could spend the day with another girl.” Dominic raised his eyebrow. “Don't forget that it was you who stood me up.” I didn't stand him up. Although I didn't inform him, I had asked Camille to tell him on my behalf. On Valentine's Day morning, my father had called to inform me of my grandmother's passing. Given how sudden it was and the fact that I couldn't get through Dominic's phone, I had told Camille to pass the message before hurrying back home. Since grandmother's dying wish was to be buried in her hometown, the funeral was held in her village. Back then, the phone reception in the village was poor. The few days I was there, I could hardly make a call. Even if I did, the line would be quickly cut off. Consequently, I wasn't able to get in touch with Dominic. However, I was confident that Camille would relay the message to him. Therefore, I wasn't too hung up about it. Although I had missed spending Valentine's Day with him, it was just an unfortunate set of circumstances. However, after I returned to school, I realized Dominic and Camille were not around. They were supposed to have represented the school in a competitive debate. Therefore, an entire week had passed before I had met up with Dominic again. “I didn't stand you up. Something happened back then. Besides, didn't I explain to you after that?” Dominic didn't answer my question. Instead, he replied plainly, “Let's talk about this later.” After that, he returned his attention to Xenia, “Is there anything else?” Actually, I wanted to clear the air at once. However, since we had guests, I had to take his pride into consideration. After giving it some thought, Xenia continued, “I saw her checking your phone without your knowledge.”Jennie interjected, “Yes, I saw that too. She even answered your phone calls. However, given how close both of you were, it didn't occur to me to tell you about it.” After that, Xenia and Jennie continued to reveal many incidents which I had no knowledge of. Although most of them were trivial, the intention behind them was insidious. In fact, I was shocked at how frightening Camille could be. After doing so much behind my back, she was still able to pretend as if she was my best friend in front of me. After that, Xenia related an incident that made me extremely upset. When I had first entered university and before I became best friends with Camille, I enjoyed a cordial relationship with Xenia and Jennie although we weren't particularly close. After all, we were dormmates and had nothing against each other. Hence, there was simply no reason for us to resent one another. It wasn't until I got together with Dominic that our relationship began to sour. At that time, it was the dorm's tradition to treat our dormmates to dinner to introduce our new boyfriends. That was what I had planned to do then. However, on the day we were supposed to meet, only Camille had shown up. Back then, she had told both Dominic and me that Xenia and Jennie couldn't make it because they were busy. However, during the meal, Camille had privately told me that both girls were interested in Dominic. When they knew the purpose of the meal, they naturally refused to come. After that, Camille would occasionally tell me about how both girls resented me. As time went on, I had slowly drifted apart from Xenia and Jennie. Moreover, their actions had also demonstrated their disdain for me. That night, after hearing what Xenia and Jennie had said, I finally found out that Camille had been sowing discord among all of us. Not only had she not invited both girls to the dinner just as I had asked her to, but she had even told them that I hated them. By then, I was already dumbstruck. I didn't understand why Camille had to go through so much unnecessary trouble. Even if she had wanted to sow discord, she should have focused on me and Dominic. On second thought, she seemed to have executed her plan very well. Hearing Xenia and Jennie talk about the past, I was already filled with rage. As for Dominic, he continued listening without saying a word. I would occasionally glance at him, tempted to ask about his thoughts. Evidently, everyone else could see the matter objectively. Despite how smart Dominic was, he, too, was easily manipulated by Camille. That evening, the dinner between the four of us lasted three hours. After dinner, we returned to the hotel. As Xenia and Jennie were setting off with their trekking team the next day, they had to turn in early. As for Dominic and myself, we had no mood to go anywhere else until we cleared the air. In truth, it wasn't hard for me to guess that Camille hadn't passed my message on. Furthermore, it was likely she had significantly twisted the facts too. Luckily, I had managed to explain myself after that, in addition to the fact that we were separated for a while. Hence, neither of us was bothered by the details. Otherwise, the incident might have prematurely doused the feelings we had for each other. However, I was really hung up on why he had spent Valentine's Day with Camille. It just wasn't right for him to be with another girl on that special day.
