Revenge of the Rejected
Charles’ eyelids fluttered open as he gained consciousness. He looked around, and noticed he was in a hospital. He felt relieved that Vera acted fast on the issue. Vera noticed he was awake, and moved closer to him, with an expression of worry. “Are you okay now? How are you feeling?” She asked, out of concern. Charles managed to sit up, although with little pains here and there. “I’m much better, I guess. Thanks for helping me before it became too late.” “You’re welcome. So, what happened?” Vera asked, out of curiosity. “I really don’t know. All I know is I felt really weak, and dizzy as soon as I got home.” The doctor came in before Charles could continue speaking, and silence reigned except for the taps which the doctor’s shoes made. “Good evening, Mr. Lincoln. How are you feeling now?” The doctor questioned, with a slight smile. “I’m much better, doctor. What does the test say about my condition?” Charles asked as he noticed the papers in the doctor’s hands. “Oh! Well, it says you were poisoned.” “What! How?” Charles exclaimed in disbelief. “A slow effect poison was used, and it became worse at that moment. If you were brought to the hospital later than that, you could have lost your life.” Charles and Vera glanced at each other, and he sighed. “How could I have been poisoned?” Charles thought to himself as he was still baffled about the poison issue. “And from what we discovered, it was food poisoning, so someone could have poisoned you through food. If its possible you can remember who it could be, it would be better so you can do justice to that.” The doctor uttered, and walked out of the ward. “Can you try to think back on what food you’ve eaten that gave you a weird feeling?” Vera asked, looking intently at Charles, and hoping he would remember. “I don’t recall a food that made me feel a little weird after eating.” Charles replied, still feeling baffled. Then a call came in, and he discovered it was from Mr. Darwin. He decided to answer the call as he was curious to know what Mr. Darwin had called him for. “Good evening, Mr. Darwin.” “Good evening, Mr. Lincoln. I’m so sorry if I’m interrupting anything important.” Mr. Darwin apologized over the phone. “No. It’s fine.” “Alright then. I just wanted to tell you that I have considered what you spoke to me about. I have dissolved the contract between Mr. Mark and I.” He informed Charles, delightfully. This made Charles feel delighted. He was glad that his plan to make Mark feel miserable had worked, and imagining how he could be feeling right now made him feel accomplished. “That’s good to hear. I’m glad you made the right choice. We can talk about business deals when we see, if that’s okay with you.” “Sure, that’s fine.” “Alright then. Have a nice night.” After the call ended, Charles looked up at Vera who looked tired, and felt she had tried enough. He looked at the time on the phone, and figured out it was still okay for her to go back home, alone. ‘You’ve tried, Vera. You can go home. Thank you for tonight.” Charles appreciated her as he adjusted himself on the bed. “Are you sure you’re fine with that?” “I’m in the hospital, so they’ll take good care of me, and I ought to be back on my feet, tomorrow. So, go home to rest.” Charles urged her, assuring her it was fine. Then Vera sighed. “Alright, goodnight.” She uttered, then walked out his ward. As soon as Vera left, Charles went back deep in his thoughts, thinking about who could have poisoned him without him knowing. He hoped he could remember at least, to know the kind of punishment the person deserved. “My maid can’t possibly be the one who did that as I have been eating the food she prepares, and nothing bad has happened. It has to be someone whom I ate his or her food recently.” Charles thought to himself. Then his eyes widened as his thoughts drifted to Rosaline. He shook his head slowly in denial as he could not bring himself to assume, she did that. But he also couldn’t stop himself from being suspicious about that. She had called him suddenly to eat dinner, and even at the zoo, she acted weird. From acting nervous, and awkward to her mood changing after one call. “I don’t think I can wait until tomorrow to ask her.” Charles thought to himself and tried to stand, but a sharp pain stopped him abruptly. “Shit!” he cursed under his breath, and bit his lower lip in pain. Charles became furious as he wasn’t pleased with his current situation. Just when he needed to confirm something really important, his current state prevented him from doing that. And if he found out that it was Rosaline who planned this, he didn’t think he would ever forgive and trust her. In fact, hatred for her would fill his heart because she took his mother’s face, and acted wrongly to him. More like giving him another bad memory with the same face of his mother. Suddenly, his phone began to ring, so he checked his phone to check who was calling him again. To his surprise and joy, he found out it was Rosaline. It was a video call, and he felt that was the right type of call at that moment. He didn’t wait for his phone to ring much before he answered her call. “Hey, Charles.” “Where are you right now?” Charles questioned immediately with a straight face. “Is that a ward?” Rosaline asked, staring at the background. “Cut the crap, and tell me what you did!” Charles said, in between his teeth. Rosaline then sighed, and smacked her lips. “I guess you’ve caught on. Well, since you lived, I’m going to kill myself. But before I do, I just want to tell you a few things.” Charles felt betrayed, and his heart felt as if it had been pierced with arrows. His eyes began to look red like he could strangle Rosaline if she was right in front of him. “I never intended to do all that to you, but I had no choice to. Yeah, I wanted to tell you, but people like me who have nothing can’t seem to freely make their own decisions.” Tears strolled down Rosaline’s cheeks, and she sniffled after cleaning them.“I don’t want to continue with this anymore, so I have to leave this world. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me, and if you can’t, it’s fine. It’s my fault for being poor enough to be ruled by the wealthy, and influential.” Rosaline said, then brought out a knife. “No… Rosaline, no. Don’t do that. I haven’t given you the punishment you deserve! These are all excuses!” Charles yelled in anger. He felt it was unfair to kill herself when he could only take his revenge on her, and probably she would learn from it, and live a better life, but killing herself was like mocking him that he was too gullible to have trusted her, and still not be able to do anything about her betrayal. Rosaline smiled, and raised the knife, then stabbed herself. Her eyes widened and popped like they were going to fall out of the sockets, and the phone dropped down. Rosaline kept stabbing herself until she died so no paramedics or hospital would be able to save her enough to be punished when she lives. “Shit!” Charles cursed out loud in anger, and flames of fury burned inside of him. “The only person who could do this much is none other than my father. Father, just watch and see how I will torment you greatly as a payback for this which you have done.” "But wait until I step down from being governor so we can play this evenly."
