Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 48

Charles was a bit troubled and displeased especially with the fact that he couldn’t jump into their conversation to ask about the Jefferson they were talking about. It was definitely going to be rude and a huge turn off for Mr. Grayson as it wasn’t nice to just interrupt or show signs that one was eavesdropping. Soon, Mr. Grayson stood up, and walked out of the conference room. Charles exhaled sharply, and his expression could show he was in deep thoughts. Vera who noticed that, tried to bring back his attention. “Is anything up?” She asked as she touched him lightly. Charles snapped out of his thoughts and looked at her. “Yeah?” “I asked if anything is wrong?” Vera repeated her question. “Oh, nothing.” Charles replied and looked back at the table. After a few minutes, Mr. Grayson walked back into the conference room, adjusting his suit. “I’m so sorry for the delay. Now, we can kickstart.” He said as he sat down. Charles wasn’t as interested as he was before. His attention was now divided into two. He wanted to badly know what Mr. Grayson had gone to talk about to Jefferson, and how important it was for Mr. Grayson to leave an important conference meeting to attend to him. “Mr. Charles, what do you think about what he just said?” Mr. Grayson directed the question at Charles. Charles didn’t hear whatever the man who had just spoken, said, but he had to make it look like his attention was right with them all along. “Uhm… It’s nice. What other special feature do you think we can add to the robots’ capability?” Charles asked as that would cover up the fact that he wasn’t listening. “Well, I think we can concentrate more on the emotional responses it gives. Probably make whoever purchases the robot to think the robot really connects with them.” The first speaker replied. “Oh, that’s fine. I’m certain this project is going to be a really successful one. We have great master minds here.” Charles responded with a smile. After they were done with the meeting, Charles and Vera went out after Charles exchanged pleasantries with Mr. Grayson. They got into the car, and the driver started the car.“I’ll be dropping you off at a place where you can get a cab.” Charles said as he leaned against the seat. “I thought we were going to get to your home together, and that we would talk about the outcome of the conference meeting we just had.” Vera said, looking confused. “Yes. It ought to be that way, but right now, i have a meeting with someone.” Charles replied, let out an exhausted sigh, and closed his eyes. Vera felt that there was something going on with him, but then he would not share. So, she hoped that he would be able to accomplish or find peace in his heart if he couldn’t speak out. As soon as they got to where Vera would take her cab, the car halted and then she went out of the car. Charles didn’t bother opening his eyes at all as he was still strategizing against his enemies, and how to serve them the punishment they deserved. Then his phone rang, and he discovered it was Mark. Now, Mark’s call was a call he shouldn’t ignore at any time because he didn’t want to miss any information or sort. “Hello. Alright.” Soon, Charles got home, and he changed into comfortable clothes, then went down to the sitting room to wait for Mark. Mark was proving to be useful to him, and he planned to drain him of all the information he had. He knew that Mark could be swayed by money if anyone decided to give him that, so he had his own plan to surprise him with an amount just so as to deepen the trust well. He heard footsteps walking towards him and he prepared himself for a fruitful conversation, but it was James who appeared. “I didn’t expect to see you, James.” Charles voiced out, and dropped his glass of wine. “Yes. I tried reaching out to you through your phone, but it wasn’t reachable.” James replied, defending himself. “Wasn’t reachable?” Charles repeated, in disbelief, then checked his phone. He discovered his phone was now in airplane mode and that was the reason James couldn’t reach him. He had mistakenly turned on the airplane mode, and that was his guess, so he turned it off. “Sorry about that. It was from my end. So, what brings you here?” Charles asked, comfortably, but conscious of his time. “Well, an idea sparked up in my head about the situation you asked me to handle, and I decided to share it with you.” James said, looking excited about what he was about to say. Before Charles could speak, the doorbell rang, and Charles knew it was Mark. He glanced at the door, and gave the maid who was about to open the door, a signal not to open it yet, then he turned to look at James who was wondering what was going on. “I will listen to that idea later, but for now, go to the guest room and prepare what you have to say well. I have a visitor which I do not want him to see your face or know any of my workers.” Charles instructed with a straight face. “Oh! I understand. No problem.” James responded, with a knowledge of what was going on. Then he left Charles’s presence for the guest room. As soon as James was out of sight, Charles signaled back to the maid to open the door, and she did. Mark walked in, looking at the maid and wondering why she was so sluggish to open the door, then he cleared his throat and looked forward, comporting himself as he saw Charles. “Good day, Charles.” He greeted, with a smile and sat, on Charles’ instruction. “Good day. So, what information do you have for me?” Charles asked, wasting no time. “It seems the Governor is using someone close to you as a spy for him.” Mark revealed as he looked at his left and right to ensure no one was eavesdropping.
