Revenge of the Rejected
“Wake up, Charles! It’s 8 am.” Charles' digital alarm blared in his eyes and he jumped to his feet. “Damn it!” He cursed aloud as he turned the alarm off. Rising from his bed, he checked his schedule for the day and gasped when he realized he had to go to the Adam’s corporation for the official handover. He hadn’t received the ownership rights of the company yet and he needed to get it. The Adams were crafty and could run away with it. Just as he was getting ready, the system’s screen appeared before him. He smiled because it had been a long time since he received any mission from the system. [Spend $50 million dollars in 24 hours and earn 2 black card points.] [Transferring funds to your bank account now.] As expected, his phone beeped with a notification. He had received $50 million dollars in his bank account. The system’s screen vanished immediately and Charles returned to his morning routine, while contemplating on what he could spend the money on. After dressing, his chauffeur drove him to Adam's corporation. Charles had never been particularly fond of confrontation, but he knew he had to confront the Adams before they hand over the ownership rights of their company. The sun was setting as he arrived at the small building of the Adams corporation. As he entered the building, he could sense the tension in the air. Most of the staff had already heard the rumors circulating about a change in ownership. Whispers and hushed conversations filled the corridor. “That is our new boss.” He heard one of the workers say. “I saw him on the news yesterday. I heard he is a very powerful man.” Charles smiled as he heard those words. “You are right.” Another chimed in. “In fact, he is one of the best businessmen in the city.” Charles ignored them and made his way to the main office, determined to carry out his task of retrieving the ownership rights. He believed that every staff member in the company had already heard about the change of ownership but he was wrong. As he made his way to the second floor, the financial manager, Mr. Thompson, a portly man with a stern demeanor, blocked Charles' path. "Who are you, and what are you doing here?" he demanded, clearly unaware of the change in ownership. Charles maintained his composure, a wry smile on his face. "I'm Charles, and I'm here to oversee the evacuation of the Adams corporation's properties. You might say I'm the new owner."Mr. Thompson's face turned an alarming shade of red as he sputtered, "That is a lie! The Adams family would never sell their company to the likes of you." Charles chuckled softly, not bothered by the man's outburst. "Well, it seems they did, Mr. Thompson. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have work to do." Mr. Thompson was shocked that Charles even knew his name but he didn’t know that Charles spent the entire night going through the list of staff members in the company. He was going to fire some of the incompetent employees and replace them with hardworking people. As Charles turned to leave, the financial secretary, Sarah, who had been eavesdropping, couldn't contain her laughter. "You're out of your mind if you think you can take over this company," she said. "The Adams family is not known for selling their legacy. I don’t know who you are or who you claim to be but this company is not for sale.” Charles glanced at Sarah with an understanding smile but said nothing in response. He had no desire to engage in a verbal sparring match with the staff. Just then, the grand office door swung open, and an elderly, sad looking woman entered. It was Mrs. Adams, the head of the family and the heart of the corporation. Mr. Thompson wasted no time, rushing to her side. "Mrs. Adams, there's a madman here claiming to be the new owner of our company!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with disbelief. “Should I ask some of the security staff to kick him away? I don’t even know why they let him in here in the first place.” Mrs. Adams, full of anger, glared at Mr. Thompson. “Get out of my face. If you were doing your job as the financial manager, maybe I wouldn’t have lost my company.” Mr. Thompson’s eyes widened with shock as he realized that Charles was telling the truth earlier. Without uttering another word, Mrs. Adams made her way to her office. Mr Thompson didn’t even know what to say as he stared between Charles and Sarah, who was also left tongue-tied. He moved closer to Charles and tried to speak to him in a calmer voice. He chuckled nervously. “Mr. Charles, I didn’t even know that the ownership rights had been transferred. Please don’t mind my rudeness earlier. I was just trying to protect the company.” Charles stole a quick glance at him and shook his head. “Save your explanation. I know everything about you already.” “Sir—I can—I can explain.” He stammered. “I was—” But then, Mrs. Adams emerged from her office, holding a leather-bound document in her hand. She walked up to Charles and extended it to him. The document was unmistakably the ownership transfer, and Charles's eyes widened in surprise. "Here you go," Mrs. Adams said with a frown. “I hope you are happy to take everything from us. You’ll rot in hell for what you’ve done.” The financial manager's eyes bulged, his jaw dropping in shock. He had been so sure that the Adams family would never lose their beloved company. Charles accepted the document with a smile on his face. “What goes around will surely come back. This is karma and I hope you enjoy it. I suggest you tell Mark to start a delivery job. It will definitely help him earn a few cents every day.” He mocked her. “This is far from being over.” Mrs. Adam threatened. “Just watch and see. You’ll regret messing with my family.” With that, she stormed away angrily. *************** Charles returned home from the Adams corporation, eager to get some rest. He had gotten what he wanted and revenge was now at his fingertips. As he approached his doorstep, his footsteps slowed. There, on his front porch, stood Angela, her presence an unexpected shock. He hadn't shared his home address with her, and he couldn't understand how she had found her way here. "Angela?" Charles asked, disbelief etched on his face. "How did you...?" Before he could finish his question, Angela rushed to speak, her voice trembling with a mixture of desperation and frustration. "Charles, please, I had to find you at all cost. I need you to forgive my family and let us have our company. You know it’s the only thing we have." "If you’re here for that, don’t bother begging. Your brother wronged me and I have no intentions of forgiving him or your family. Please leave, I’ve had a very busy day.” Tears welled up in Angela's eyes as she begged, "Please, Charles, he didn't fully understand the consequences. He is willing to make amends. We're willing to make amends." “And what makes you think you can? What makes you think that I want you to make amends? The deed has been done.” “Listen Charles, I know you. This is not the man I married. The man I married was kind and forgiving. He was—“ Just as she was speaking, Vera strolled elegantly toward them. Angela's demeanor instantly shifted from pleading to anger. "Really? Is it because of her? Is she your new girlfriend?!" she spat out, then turned in Vera’s direction. "So, this is what you've been up to, huh? Stealing my husband from me?" Charles, aware that things were escalating quickly, intervened. "Angela, don’t be ridiculous. Vera had nothing to do with our separation. You initiated the divorce, remember? Stop disgracing yourself by saying such things." Vera, her voice calm but firm, added, "I didn't steal anyone, Angela. I am just his personal assistant. After all, you shouldn’t be bothered because he’s your ex-husband.”Angela, however, seemed blinded by her emotions. "You're both liars! I can't believe you'd do this to me." Charles had enough of the situation. He stepped closer to Angela, his tone resolute. "Angela, this isn't the place or time to discuss this. You need to leave now. I won't allow this to turn into a scene." With a quick glance, he reached for his phone, as if to emphasize his point. Angela, her face a mixture of anger and embarrassment, finally realized the futility of her efforts. She turned to leave, her footsteps heavy with shame. Vera turned to Charles. “You didn’t tell me that your ex-wife wants you back. Are you going to get back with her?” Charles shook his head. “She’s just here for her family’s company. Angela only knows how to use people. She has no love in her heart and that’s why I would never ever get back with her.”
