Revenge of the Rejected
Vera gasped in shock, and moved a few steps backwards. “I hope you’re not planning to run, because that would only aggravate the situation.” Charles uttered. Vera couldn’t believe he would actually make attempt to arrest her. “Charles, but I just said I didn’t do it, and I don’t understand how the money was withdrawn.” “It is boss, to you. And what kind of secretary are you if you claim you don’t know how the money went missing. Yet, you’re acting like you know nothing about it. If you must know, I’m currently highly disappointed in you.” Not long after he said that, a knock came on the door, and Charles urged the person to come in. “Boss, what’s going on? The cops are headed to your office.” James voiced out, looking quite concerned. But then, Charles didn’t say a word, and he had to look at Vera who was silent. Her head was dropped down like she was too embarrassed to face him. “What’s going on?” James asked again, in a low tone as his eyes drifted from Charles to Vera. “If you’re really curious, just wait until the cops get here.” Charles spoke, and finally sat back on his chair. James was baffled, and hoped that it wasn’t something so serious, or worse, involved Vera because he was certain that Vera won’t say a word, seeing as she had dropped her head. In no time, the cops arrived. “Good day, sir.” “Good day, officer. She is the one that needs to be arrested. She is the one in charge of my bank accounts, and now, millions of dollars have gone missing, and she can’t explain how they went missing.” Charles explained to them. “Alright, sir. We’ll also make further investigations.” The officer assured. “Please do.” James was very shocked with this news, and he walked up to Vera. “Vera, say something. What the hell is going on?” He questioned Vera, and then what even got him more shocked was that Vera looked up to him, and her eyes were blood-shot, dripping tears. It was so unlike her to be this weak, or rather, show her weakness. “I really don’t understand, James. I didn’t take that money.” Vera spoke, looking really pitiful. James then turned to Charles. “Boss. Vera is in tears. We’ve never seen her that way before. I don’t think she’s the one who did this.” “What are you trying to say, James? She is the one in charge of my bank accounts, and then millions of dollars are missing as we speak. She couldn’t even explain how it got missing; neither did she say she shared my bank account details to anyone. So, what do I believe? Let the cops take her and do her work!” Charles finalized, and then picked up a document, and began to flip the pages of it. The cops took Vera, and James had no choice than to go back to his office because he wouldn’t want to be on the suspect zone on Charles’ list. Back in his office, he thought about it. Charles was right. If Vera couldn’t explain what happened, then it’s probably her who took the money, except she gave the details to someone else, which she has denied. He connected the heel of his palm, and let out a deep sigh. “I really do hope this get sorted out as soon as possible. Vera, I do hope that you’re not the one behind this.” He uttered under his breath. At the station Vera had been taken to the station, and was kept in the investigation room. She sobbed a little, and cleaned her tears while staring at the CCTV camera which were stationed to spy on all those who were brought to this room. She couldn’t believe that she would actually have a cause to come down here one day. Being alone, she sank into her thoughts, which was drifted back to Charles. “Charles is right. If I didn’t usurp the money, then it had to be someone else. But it can’t possibly be Louis.” She thought to herself. She had this belief that Louis is really wealthy, and has no reason to steal millions of dollars. Besides, he won’t do that, knowing fully well that she also has his bank details which she could use in getting revenge on him. Vera also convinced herself that there’s no way she would date a thief as she would have detected it even at the talking stage. She hit her head gently on the table. “Then who could it be.” She voiced out, becoming frustrated. She knew that if the culprit wasn’t found, Charles wouldn’t mind throwing her into jail, and she hoped deeply that wouldn’t have to happen. Soon, she heard the door click, and move. Then a tall man, dressed in black, walked in. “Good day, Miss Vera. I’m Mr. Walton, and I’m the one in charge of your case.” He introduced himself, and pulled a chair back, so he could have his seat. “Please I didn’t steal his money. There’s no way I would do such thing to my boss. Apart from being my boss, he’s more like a friend to me. Please believe me.” Vera pleaded earnestly. “Miss Vera, we get this a lot when it’s time for questioning, but if truly you aren’t the one, you’ll have to speak out and let us know who did this. Because from what I know, it’s either you or a third party who stole this money. Reveal the third party.” Mr. Walton urged her. “You don’t seem to understand, Mr. Walton. There’s no way I would have given out this crucial and confidential information out.” Vera looked into his eyes like a puppy who is scared of the outside world. “Come on, Miss Vera. You should know that if you’re attesting to the fact that no one knows about this, then you’re definitely the one who stole the money. You can speak to me. It’s only us two here, and if you do not want your boss to know about it, due to the fear of him being disappointed in you, there’s a way we can make things easier for you.” “Please believe me. I really didn’t do it.” Vera pleaded in a soft tone. Then Mr. Walton rose to his feet. “Alright, case solved. You are the one who did this, and I hope you know the consequences of your actions.” “No! Please don’t go.” Vera voiced out as she rose to her feet instantly. “I…I actually gave someone else the information.” *********************** The officer halted in his steps and looked back at her. “Are you certain of what you just said and not trying to make anyone take the downfall for what you did, because the consequences of that would be unbearable for you.” The cop said, still staring at her. “I gave someone else the information, but there’s no way in the world he would try to steal my boss’ money.” Vera defended Louis. The officer sighed, looked to the left like he was tired of hearing stories like that. Then he pulled out his chair, and sat before her. “And why do you think so in a world where you can’t fully trust anyone?” The officer questioned her. “He is wealthy and has companies of his own. There’s no way he would be tempted to steal millions of dollars.” “You are aware that there are greedy people in this world, hun! Besides, who is this person to you and how long have you known him? Give me full details about him. We are going to find out if he did steal the money or he didn’t.” “His name is Louis Frenchman. He’s also into technology production. He’s my boyfriend… and…” Vera paused, finding it difficult to reveal how long she has known him for. “And how long have you known this man?” The officer questioned again, trying to note things down. “A few months? Or maybe just one and a half month.” Vera responded, avoiding eye contact with the officer. “Wow. Interesting. So, you happen to know this man for just a month and half, and you think you’ve known everything about him? You are really funny. And it’s quite surprising that someone like you could fall really hard. Anyways, we’ll take up the investigation, and don’t worry, you’ll be updated on whatever happens. But for the meantime, you’ll be right here.” The officer said to her, then rose to his feet, and headed for the door. Vera dropped her head on the table in shame. She couldn’t believe all these happened to her, and she began to think back on how these things unlike her, started. It was starting from when she gave love a chance. “But is it a crime to love and be loved? Why is it when it’s my turn to have a love story that things turned out this way?” She said to herself as tears strolled down her eyes uncontrollably. She recalled that Charles had encouraged her to do what makes her happy, and now that she took the step, she’s the one going through the consequences alone. Although, she was quite convinced that Louis didn’t take it, but she also couldn’t help but suspect a little. “I just hope they get this thing done with, and find out that I have nothing to do with this.” She thought to herself as she stared into blank space.
