Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 205

Charles, Vera and James walked into the reception hall, and looked around. "For some reason, I'm getting goosebumps. I know we'll do just fine, but I still can't help the nervous feeling that clouds me." James said, smoothening his suit jacket. He looked smart in a navy blue suit, and white shirt. It was a regular for business men, but James made it seem even better. Vera was dressed in stunning red, and her hair was packed beautifully at the base of her neck, with a pin on it. She walked confidently with her heels clacking on the ground, and if she was nervous, she hid all the signs well. Charles was dressed in dashing cream. They were going to stun the audience with their looks, eloquence, and product. Their trip hadn't been useless after all. It had given him a massive idea, and his genius team had put it together, working overnight, so they could try to meet up with the short notice. Layla was probably back at the psychiatric hospital, receiving severe treatment, but thanks to her, things could go beautifully— hopefully. "The most anxious one out of us all is definitely the lady in the red suit." James muttered, trying to tease Vera. "And I'm probably the only man here. At least I'm not letting my fears show." She shot back, and Charles smiled. "How do you manage to give low-blows?" He asked, straightening his tie, and she walked ahead of them. "Confidence is all it takes. Have confidence, and you're already a step to winning. Based on what I've seen, we're definitely claiming this day as ours. Let's hope Longman keeps his word, else he might see the Layla in me." She said, with her expression turning dark at the last words, and Charles chuckled, while James looked disturbed. "You would make a formidable opponent, Vera. Just take a look at your expression." He said, and she pursed her lips, before rolling her eyes, and looked away. "Don't blame me because you cannot make such a chilling expression that wins over the enemy in seconds." She replied, and paused, as they had gotten to the receptionists. "Welcome Sirs, and Ma'am, please register the name of your company here." A lady in a peach suit said, with a very bright smile. Vera returned it, and watched as Charles wrote down the name of the partnership company between he and Longman. She didn't know why she was so happy. Maybe it was because she despised Longman, and wanted to see him thrashed. After registering, they walked towards the elevators. "Are the employees on their way?" Charles asked. "Yes, the selected few are on their way." James replied. Vera looked around, and liked the view of the multitudes, who had come to watch. They all seemed excited, and she thought she heard a few of them placing bets. Charles' company seemed to be the company everyone bet on, and it made her smile. They walked into elevators, and Charles took a deep breath. "You two shouldn't show nervousness. We have to confidence, and remember to keep a smile on. Look the audience in the eye, do the same to the judges, and own the stage. Do not stand in one position, but show that you're confident by walking around, and staring at the audience with a smile. Let's be different. We don't have to follow the rules of standing in one spot. Already Charles has a lot of followers. Don't let them down. We have to charm the judges, and…." "Gosh! Will the lecture end? It sounds like you're trying to nag us. Do this, don't do this… do this…" James cut in, and Vera kept her cool. "I'm just trying to make sure everyone does the required." She said. They walked into the large hall, and met a lot of people filling up the seats already. They met Longman in the contestant seat, and he smiled, and bowed lightly. Immediately all three of them smiled, and bowed lightly to him, his smile faded, and it made Vera almost laugh out loud. Shortly, the judges began to fill in the seats, and a host came out on the stage to give the opening speech. He spoke for minutes, making the tension build up, and afterwards, the competition began. Different companies with awesome technologies wrecked wonders of applause among the audience, and Charles couldn't help but tense up, wondering how things could go. Finally, he was called up for the partnership with Longman. He, Vera and Mr. Longman walked up to the stage, and Charles addressed the audience just the way Vera had told him to. He smiled, gestured, and locked eyes with the audience, and judges, and indeed, the response seemed good."Here… we have with us, Pax, a robot designated to help with insomnia. Roughly, research shows that one out of three adults worldwide suffer from insomnia, and Pax is here to solve that. Pax, meaning peace in Latin, was made to soothe troubled minds." He said, and one of the employees walked up the stage in nightclothes. Vera worked on the white robot with a circular head, and triangular body, and the man laid a blanket on the ground, on which he slept. "Pax here automatically picks out the songs you like best. It picks them out, judging by how often you listen to them. Mind you, it plays the softest song. This employee here is connected Pax, and will be asleep in minutes." Charles explained, and shortly, Pax began to bring out light vapor. "This is a sensitive scent that enhances comfort, and a sense of peace." A soft song began to play out, and the audience listened. Shortly, Pax's voice blended perfectly with the music. "You are asleep. You are calm… you wish to sleep. Floating away you are. In the land of dreams upon ancient stars. Light as a feather you are, breaking beyond the world's bars…." Pax continued softly, with a calming voice, and the employee's head lolled sideways. "With a voice embodying hypnotic qualities, Greg, here, has been guided peacefully to sleep. His worries have been kept aside." He said, and Vera roamed her hands over Greg's face, but his eyeballs didn't move. He was tickled lightly, but his breath came out long, deep, and even. After achieved her aim, Pax also went to sleep. "Pax also has sensors that allow her to be aware whenever her owner is having troubled dreams, or is about waking in the middle of the night. She can sense it." Charles explained further, and another employee came up next to Greg, and began to turn and shift restlessly, shaking her head, like she was having a nightmare, and Pax was awakened. "Summer lands, no bad dreams, you are asleep, you are happy…" it began to pacify the restless employee, and as the employee slowed down, it continued singing, until five minutes later when the employee was still, and breathing evenly. "Everyone… This is Pax." Charles said, once more, expecting applause, but… No applause came…….
