Revenge of the Rejected
Charles wondered why he had to be faced with this kind of difficult situation. It was enough that he was going through things that could give one a migraine and now the system just had to be one of them. Charles placed his index finger on his philtrum while his thumb rested on his chin as he thought critically one who could be the best person to donate money to. “I guess I have no other choice than to pick before it’s too late.” He thought to himself, then turned to the nurse. “Alright, I know who I’m going to be making payment for. The man who has lung cancer can have my help.” Charles said to her and she nodded her head. “Please this way.” She gestured her hand to lead Charles to where he would make payments and documents he needed to sign. Charles had picked the man who was in his last stages of cancer because there was still a chance he could live beyond tomorrow, rather than the ones that it could turn out too late to save them. Thankfully, the man only had 500 million dollars left to pay up, so Charles was more like his savior at the last minute. When Charles got to the reception, he made payments and signed the necessary documents for the surgery to take place at the right time. After all the necessary registrations, he left the hospital and headed back home immediately. “So, how’s the result?” Charles asked impatiently. Usually, the system was meant to have notified him on the result immediately after completing the task or a few minutes after, but it had been silent ever since. FIRST TASK COMPLETED ACTION: DONATED 500 MILLION DOLLARS TO A LUNG CANCER PATIENT WHO IS CURRENTLY IN THE LAST STAGE OF HIS CANCER. RESULTS: SUCCESS SECOND TASK YET TO BE COMPLETED. “Yes!” Charles voiced out in a happy tone. He was glad that he had made the right choice after all. He didn’t have to know the consequences of not getting it right. Now, all he had to focus on was ensuring that he won the competition that was to be held in a matter of days. When it was evening, dinner was set and James was feeling much better that he could join Charles and Amelia in the dining room to eat. “So, what’s the plan regarding Longman? You haven’t come up with anything.” “Yes. We’ll partner with him only for the contest. After the contest, I’m going to cut him out and we would have found a solution to the bomb they planted in your arm.” Charles replied, and James nodded his head. He trusted that Charles would find a way since he was still bent on it, and spoke with so much assurance. “I would be visiting my company tomorrow, earlier than Longman’s people would arrive, just so I can see what they have in mind to create exclusively.” “Oh, that’s a good idea. I think I’m much better now. I should be able to go out with you.” “No. You need more rest.” Charles insisted. “I understand, but I’m the one who knows how better I feel now. Besides, I have a suggestion regarding the preparation for this upcoming contest.” “Which is?” “I feel we should go on a trip to learn more about different tech products, visit some places in that city and learn what we feel the world needs.” James suggested. As unnecessary as that idea was, it turned out that it could actually be a good one. They would learn more and understand better the needs of the world. “That sounds nice. I could actually consider that, but you won’t be going with me.” “Oh, come on. You can’t be this way. I’m much better now. I’ve got to do something too.” James rebelled, showing how displeased he was. “Babe, you need full time rest. Because you’re feeling better doesn’t mean the bomb won’t make you feel worse any moment, depending on Longman’s choice. At least, you ought to have your rest and heal up, so the pain could reduce a bit.” Amelia said, looking into James eyes pleadingly. James let out a deep sigh and still didn’t look pleased. In fact, he had dropped his cutlery as he no longer had the appetite to eat. “Pardon me.” He uttered, then left the dining room. Charles sighed, and dropped his cutlery as well. He understood James’ frustration of not being able to do anything since he was shot in the arm, and it was all his fault. But he still couldn’t bear to allow him work. Charles preferred for him to rest until he gets the solution to his current predicament. “I’m sorry about that.” Amelia apologized on his behalf. “No, it’s fine. I’ll be leaving tomorrow after my meeting, so if he asks of me, you can tell him I already left.” “Alright, no problem.” Charles then rose to his feet and pushed back the chair with his legs, then walked up the stairs to his room. On getting to his room, he picked up a bottle of wine which was currently at half content. Then he poured it into a glass wine and walked to his balcony, then leaned on the rails while staring at the night sky. He had never thought that the life of a wealthy and influential man could be this chaotic. It meant business men he was seeing around had a lot they were tackling. They had enemies who were always looking forward to their downfall, and therefore plotting against them. “Do they ever have peace?” he uttered, then sipped his wine again. Ever since he became famous, it had been from one enemy to another. He had thought his family were the only nemesis he had, but even as he had eliminated every single one of them, troubles were still coming in. But then, he hoped that his plans against Longman would work out, because he couldn’t just wait to make him regret every trying to play a double on him.
