The Heiress Who Took Revenge

Chapter 664 Truth and Reputation

Eliza: "Tyson likely keeps all his sensitive documents in his study. If you can find an opportunity, take a look in there." Elaine: "You don't need to tell me that." Just as Eliza finished her conversation with Elaine, a knock sounded at her door. She rose to open it and found Christian standing in the hallway. "Up so early?" Christian asked, sounding surprised. "I thought you'd sleep in for a bit." "Is something wrong?" "No, Tristan asked me to bring this to you. You'll need to wear it for the interment ceremony." Eliza looked down at the garment Christian handed her. It was a formal black dress, somber and dignified. "I understand." She noticed Christian had already changed into his funeral attire, a small white flower pinned to his lapel. "Is the burial taking place this afternoon?" "Yes," Christian replied. "Tristan is anxious for Emilia to finally be laid to rest." "Alright." Eliza quickly changed into the dress. When she went downstairs, she found all her brothers dressed in black. Tristan stood between Ronaldo and Christian, his expression unusually solemn. In his hands, he held the urn containing her mother’s ashes. Next to him, Ronaldo held their father’s urn. Both men offered Eliza a supportive smile. "Let’s go," Tristan said softly. "Okay," Eliza nodded. The Sue family's decision to inter the two together had sent the overseas media into a frenzy of gossip. Reporters had swarmed the perimeter of the cemetery, their cameras flashing incessantly as they tried to capture every detail. Some were even broadcasting live. Inside, the gathering was limited to the Sue family’s closest business associates. Security guards struggled to hold back the press as Tristan’s car pulled up to the gate. The noisy crowd fell silent for a moment as Tristan stepped out, but it didn't last."Mr. Goldbert already had a wife—your adoptive mother," a reporter shouted, breaking the silence. "Is it not immoral to bury him with a mistress?" "Public opinion on this is divided. How do you justify this decision?" "Ms. Eliza, your mother was the mistress in question. Do you have anything to say to the public?" The reporters pressed forward with their aggressive questions. To them, burying a "mistress" alongside the former wealthiest man in the region was a scandalous affront, especially since Goldbert had a legal wife—regardless of her mental state. In their eyes, this was a massive sign of disrespect to Evelyn. What they didn't know was that Goldbert and Evelyn had divorced long ago. "I appreciate the questions from the press and the public," Tristan said, his voice carrying over the crowd. "I realize these are concerns shared by many. Therefore, I have decided to hold a press conference to answer every question. The event will be live-streamed globally so that everyone can understand the full context of this situation." His announcement stunned everyone, including Eliza. She hadn't expected him to face the media so directly. Journalists would surely ask cruel and intrusive questions, yet Tristan was inviting them. He didn't have to do this; this was a private Sue family matter. "Tristan..." Eliza murmured, tugging at his sleeve. Tristan looked at her and offered a reassuring smile. "It’s alright. Emilia was never a mistress or a 'third party.' These things must be cleared up." If they didn't speak now, the rumors would only fester and haunt the family for years. It was better to settle the matter once and for all. "However, today is the day we lay our parents to rest," Tristan continued, his tone turning cold. "I ask that all members of the press leave in an orderly fashion. If anyone persists in trespassing, do not blame the Sue family for showing no mercy." The threat worked. No one wanted to risk being barred from the upcoming press conference. The loss of that kind of access would be far more damaging than missing a few shots today. Once the reporters had cleared out, Tristan signaled for the ceremony to begin. It was dusk by the time the interment was finished. Christian began overseeing the final arrangements, while Eliza remained standing before the gravestone for a long time. "Was the only goal of this to have Mom and Dad buried together?" she asked quietly.
