Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate

Chapter 86 More Careful

Makay’s p.o.v. I know that question was running through my head, but how did Meadow know? “Remember, she mentioned hearing something in the dungeon and that it was probably her gift?” Blade says in my head. Oh damn, I had forgotten about that. She received her second gift when she needed it the most and it's actually a cool one. I need to ask her how it works and if she can control it or if she gets bombarded with thoughts. Okay, come to think of it. This might not be the best gift, because she might hear my thoughts somewhere down the line when she wants to do something dangerous and I keep thinking about telling her no. “Let’s hope she can’t hear the thoughts of her Mates or you are screwed.” Blade chuckles in my head. “Thanks for pointing that out. I need to watch what I’m thinking until we know more about her gift or I’m a dead man.” I reply. I don’t doubt that she would kick my ass if she ever heard a wrong thought from me. “Is anybody home?” I hear Meadow ask when she knocks on my head. I look at her, only to realise that I am in the Alpha office. The last thing I remember is walking to the dungeons to place Rory in a cell, but I can’t remember how I got back here. “You were deep in thought, talking to Blade from time to time and you didn’t respond when we called out to you.” Meadow explains. “I was wondering if you could hear my thoughts and how much trouble I would get in if I ever thought about not wanting you to run toward danger.” I tell her honestly. “There would probably be a few other thoughts you don’t want to hear, at least not in public.” Her face turns a little red when she sees the smirk on my face, but she doesn’t knock me on my ass, so that’s a win. “What are you talking about, Son?” Dad asks and Meadow turns to face the others in the room. “I got my second gift today. I can hear others’ thoughts and even the conversation between someone and their Shifter half. I need to figure out if my test on Captain Miles was a fluke or reality and if I can hear the thoughts of my Mates.” Meadow answers. I snort as I try to stop myself from laughing at Dad’s facial expression, he looks so damn terrified at the prospect of Meadow hearing his thoughts. “I’m not sure if I want to hear what Dad is thinking from time to time.” Blade counters and I fail at keeping the laughter bottled up inside me. Meadow is laughing too, but I doubt she was able to hear my thoughts or my conversation. “Didn’t hear… just figured…. the same.” She says as she holds on to Myka, who has a confused look on his face. “Meadow, you need to test that gift of yours before you go after Winston.” Alpha Lincoln says and it is enough to sober us both up. Damn, that man is capable of sobering up a Shifter that is wasted on Crimson Nectar, the only alcoholic drink that can get a Shifter drunk. Meadow sits down on a couch and stares dead ahead. She smiles from time to time, but also frowns every now and then. No one says a word, because I think we all realise what she is doing. “I can’t hear Myka or Makay, but everyone else is screwed.” She finally says with a huge smirk. Thank the Goddess for that small piece of luck, even though I doubt anyone else will be thinking that. Mom is giggling as she keeps glancing at Dad, while he starts wiggling in his seat and I know that Mom is in the same gutter I was in a few minutes ago. “It is a good thing that I can control it.” Meadow mumbles and I hear a few people sigh in relief. “Or at least I think I can.” Sending Mom into a fit of laughter, while I do my best not to laugh at Dad’s expense. “I will have to practice this, because it might give us an advantage when we reach Grand Valley territory. If I can hear their thoughts, I might be able to find out where Winston is and we might be able to get to him quicker.” Meadow states. She is right, she needs to practice with her gift. If she can control it, she can inform the rest of us where to go or which places to steer clear of. I never thought about Shifters with a gift, but Meadow has shown me that we need to be careful with what kind of information we put out there. No one wants a target on their back because of a gift and I’ll be damned if anyone puts one on the back of my Mate. “Okay, why don’t we meet with Captain Miles and your team? We need to discuss what they can and cannot tell other Squad members.” I say. It only takes minutes for them to get to the Alpha office, but a little longer to explain what happened in Light Ridge Pack. Captain Miles is staring at Meadow when his eyes widen at a realization. “You heard my thoughts and that is why you explained the sentence.” Captain Miles says. “I wanted to test the waters, see what I am capable of. Before we leave for Grand Valley territory, I want to practice, but I don’t want anyone to find out what my gift is.” Meadow explains. We decide to leave for the territory in four days, giving Meadow enough time to practice with her gift and for us to review the plan a few more times. Having a detailed map of the territory has been a blessing, but I am hoping that not much has changed over the decades. Rocks don’t move on their own and neither do buildings. Problem is that nature can’t be stopped from growing and it might be our biggest challenge. Myka points out the spots that could have overgrown or where a passage might be closed off by now. We will need to be more careful when we reach those spots, but Myka thinks that most of the territory will still be similar to the file.
