Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate
Meadow’s p.o.v. “Okay, can we talk about something else during dinner?” Luna Leona asks, after looking at me for a second. She managed to take the conversation away from the journal and me, for which I am very grateful. River and I play twenty questions and the others butt in from time to time, making dinner a pleasant time. Especially when River asks for my favorite color and I ask them to guess. Most call out Pink, but I am not a girly girl. Even though I like a bright, fluorescent Pink, that is the only kind of Pink I like. I like deep, dark colors in the green and red spectrum, but my most favorite color is ice blue. I got stunned looks after that confession; none of them guessed any shade of blue. Makay smacked Misha on the head when he exclaimed that it was a boy’s color, telling him he was an Idiot. After dinner, I returned to my room on the Beta floor to continue reading the journal and take a look at my notes. The ones I wrote down without looking at them or without noticing what I wrote down. “Should I start with looking at my notes or wait until I have read the entire journal?” I ask Rebel as I sit down on the bed. “The journal.” Rebel says after a moment of silence.I pick up the journal after putting the notepad beside me, opening the journal where I left off. Part of me wants to toss this journal in a fire, the closest I can find. Why the hell do I have to get another gift? Why the hell did this happen to me? When Mom told me about her gift, I wondered if Dad knew. She confirmed that he did. My Mother can sense other Shifters around her, but we don’t know which gift I will get because I didn’t get one when I turned eighteen. All Mom can tell me is that I will get my gift when I need it. It has been two years since Mom told me about our bloodline. I still don’t have a gift and I thank the Goddess every day for that. Damn, my gift manifested during an attack from an enemy Pack. I thought I was losing my mind when I heard unfamiliar voices in my head. It did help me save quite a few lives. I relayed everything I heard to Dad and he acted on it. Now, all I need to do is tell my Mate, our Pack’s Gamma. I'm not sure how he will respond to that news. Tomorrow I will hand this journal to my Daughter, telling her that having a gift doesn’t always mean you are a target for the evil Shifters in this Kingdom. We defeated our enemy with the use of my gift and we have taken over their territory. Her Daughter never wrote in the journal; a single line was written on her behalf. My Sister committed suicide after finding her fated Mate and he rejected her after putting her through the excruciating pains of betrayal. Shit, I thought I had it bad. So far, I have been unable to find the name of a Pack; none of them wrote down in which territory they were living. It might have been a precaution to prevent anyone from finding a pattern or another anomaly that I haven’t found yet. A knock on the door pulls me from my reading and before I can get off the bed, the door slowly opens. “Meadow, it is almost midnight. Time to turn off the lights and to get some sleep.” Beta Lilith says as she steps into my room. “Lennox is convinced that he knows why you want to take his job for a day; if he is right, you will need all the rest you can get.” I place the bookmark in the journal before I put it on the nightstand. I smile as she waits for me to get comfortable, turning off the lights as she closes the door behind her, whispering "Good night" before it is completely closed. Sleep comes quickly for me and I am grateful for my internal clock; otherwise, I would have slept through morning training. To my surprise, Myka and Makay are waiting for me down the hall. Both are dressed in training gear, covered in black from head to toe. Rebel is enjoying the view and to tell you the truth, I can’t hold it against her. “Found anything interesting?” Myka asks and Makay rolls his eyes at his Brother. “Nothing that indicates a history of evil Mates that wanted to use a gift for their own gain, only a few generations without a female and one suicide due to an Ashole of a Mate.” I answer him. When we are off the Beta floor, our conversation covers the innocent subjects, like my time with the Elders at Renegade territory. Alpha Lincoln wants to keep it close to his chest until he is convinced he can trust all Pack-members with my secret. Rhys starts following us when we leave the Pack-house, but we don’t pay attention to him at all. “If you ever need River or Misha, make sure to knock and call out before you open the door completely.” Myka says out of the blue. I look at Makay, who is looking at Myka to see if he is serious. “You wanna tell us that you walked in on them….” He lets the sentence trail off. There isn’t much else to say. Myka’s face tells us more than enough. TMI, that's for sure. Now I have to try to get that picture out of my head, but thinking of Myka walking in on them has me laughing. “Meadow, it isn’t funny. I am scarred for life.” Myka whines dramatically, which in turn makes Makay laugh. “What the hell have you been talking about? Rhys looks as if he is going to vomit.” I hear Uncle Major's familiar voice ask in my head. I quickly recount what Myka had mentioned and I actually forgot for a moment that Rhys was walking behind us. I need to hold on to Myka not to trip over my own feet as I am laughing even harder, Rhys already hates the fact that his Son is mated to a male and now he had to hear about their sexcapades. “You.. do remember… who is walking… behind us?” I manage to ask Myka and Makay through the mind-link. Both of them look over their shoulder and my attempt to stay on my feet is doomed to fail as Myka doubles over. The three of us stumble onto the training ground while we laugh and try to hold on to one another to stay on our feet.
