The Wolves Beneath the Sanctuary

Chapter 41 The Hidden Territory

Lakota Josh and Lynn start cheering while everyone else looks at me as if I have gone mad. I explain how I found the entrance to the passageway and why the building has its backdoor on the opposite side of where you would expect it. "The trees also make it difficult to see the bend in the mountainside, which was done deliberately. If a visitor wandered that far, he or she wouldn't be able to see the entrance; you can only see it when you walk along the mountainside," I explain. "There are two huge structures on either side of the passageway, but both collapsed over the years. I assume that the building to the left was for the Warriors and the building to the right is the other Pack-house. That Pack-house is three times the width of this Pack-house and four times as deep; I couldn't tell how many floors though. There was too much debris to determine that, and I didn't want to risk any of it sliding down, injuring myself in the process or alerting Lance and Peter. I am not sure if they would be able to hear it or not," I say as I look at the map Lance placed on the table, and I run my finger over the mountain ridges that surround the hidden territory. On the map it looks as if it is one huge mountain, but I know that isn't the fact, and I know Peter will be able to draw us a new map. I will inform the Council we found it, but I will not disclose the location as I want to use it to offer refuge to those that might need it. I already discussed this with my leadership, and Quinn asked how I wanted to accommodate those that wanted to meet with family after a while. Darrius came up with the idea of a diner with a motel at the fork in the road; it is far enough from the Pack and it could be used as a way of income. Our Pack-members can work there if they want to, and we will make sure that whoever is on duty there will be able to defend themselves. But Cian asked a valid question when he asked how anyone was to report trouble without alerting their visitors. He also wanted to know how I planned on keeping the hidden territory a secret and not reveal it to those that came here to find it. It is something we have been discussing with Dad, Argos, and Kobal, but so far we haven't found an answer yet. Maybe we will find a solution in the hidden territory; after all, they managed to keep it hidden during their entire existence, and I always wondered how they were able to. "Darrius, it looks like we will own a diner with a motel soon," I say, and Josy smiles at me as she already offered to run it for the Pack, something I granted her the moment she asked. Peter is smiling as well; it means he can build again, and I chuckle as I realize he forgot about the hidden territory. "Peter, you will be busy for the next couple of years. There are at least two buildings we need to rebuild, and as I said, I didn't take the time to see what else is out there, but I think it is safe to say that there are a few more buildings to rebuild," I say, and I see his eyes widen. After lunch, six Warriors volunteer to run border patrol to allow the rest of us to check out the hidden territory, and soon I show them where the entrance to the passageway is. "No wonder we didn't see it," Peter says as he is looking at the entrance, and I see him looking towards his cottage and the foundation behind him. "You are right, Lakota. This is a perfect way to move Warriors from one side to the other without anyone figuring it out; I think this is the way into the official territory, and this is how they were able to keep it hidden," Peter says, just before Dad tells me to lead the way.Josh and Lynn follow me as Dad decides to form the rear with Argos and Kobal, while everyone slowly follows me through the passageway. Once we are all through the passageway, I link our Warriors to let them know where we are and to see if we can still link one another. I can link them without any problems, and I tell Cian and Quinn about it, making Cian sigh in relief. I knew he feared we wouldn't be able to link because of the mountains, and I am glad I was able to ease his mind. We spread out to investigate the territory, but the overgrowth here is even worse, and this will take a lot longer to clear. Dad and I decide that it will be best if we rebuild the first two buildings before we clear anything else or before we inform the Council. Rebuilding this part of our territory will be done without the help of outsiders; not that we don't trust Uncle Chris and his Pack-members, but this is safer. It takes us four days to clear all the debris, and Peter was able to determine that the Pack-house was five stories high while the Warrior building was three stories high. There is enough good material to rebuild the Warrior building, and we only need new material for the Pack-house and the other Warrior building.
