The Wolves Beneath the Sanctuary

Chapter 127 First Shift

Umayza Tarja held me as I cried my eyes out, and Blaze and Alexia did all the cussing and swearing for me. After that, we stayed up all night, and I told Axel the next morning to leave us alone for the rest of the day. He didn't like it, but he did as I asked. We stayed in my room all day and ate a lot of comfort food before we crashed on my bed. In the morning, I still didn't feel fine, but I started to when Yade told me that today I could tell the others she was here. I actually got out of bed wearing a huge grin on my face. The seven of us were waiting for Council-member Dayanah for our first class of the day, and Yade agreed with me when I told her I wanted to inform the others of her presence with Council-member Dayanah there. I nearly jump out of my seat when she finally walks in, and Tarja asks me what was wrong."There is nothing wrong," I tell her as I wait for Council-member Dayanah to sit down. "I have something to confess." Council-member Dayanah tells me to proceed. "I have been keeping a secret from everyone since the day I had my accident. I was in the Safe-house eating my breakfast when Yade made herself known," I say. Everyone looks confused, but then a smile appears on Alexia's face. "You have your Wolf!" she yells as she jumps out of her seat to hug me. After a few minutes of celebrating, Dayanah pulls us back to our schoolwork, and the day goes by quickly—just like every day after that. Axel starts training me even harder, and I excel at just about everything in training. Three months later, Council-member Boaz starts training me for my position within the King's Army. With my ability, I was a valuable asset for the King, as I could get answers no one else could. It scared Boaz how good I was until I told him I had practiced with Dad for years and that I even used it at the Pack-house to find answers I never got. My eighteenth birthday is coming up soon, and after my first shift, I will get my title as the King's Ghost. Dad is proud of me and not at all disappointed I am not becoming an Assassin, because he believes I will do so much better in this position. Axel, Boris, and Yonatan know about Evander and Conri. They were pissed when they found out, and they make sure to know if and when they come to the Academy. I am glad they have my back, because Yade and I don't know how to react towards them. Boris, Tarja, and I are sitting on the bleachers as we watch this year's group of recruits for the King's Army. We always enjoy watching others train to see if we can pick up a trick or two. Two females sit down a few seats in front of us as they are talking about Captain Armand and his Squad. Boris looks at me over his shoulder, but I just shake my head as I keep looking at the training grounds. Looking back, I wish I had never stayed seated, but I did as they talked about Evander and Conri, and I really thought I could handle their conversation. "Evander was amazing last night. He didn't think twice about using my backdoor," the brunette says to the red-head. "Yeah, Conri did the same with me," the red-head giggles. Boris didn't think twice as he scooped me up and walked back to my room without saying a word. Yonatan, Axel, Alexia, and Blaze are already there, and I know Tarja linked them to meet us in my room. Tarja and Boris explain what we overheard, and Yonatan roars in anger. Axel keeps a close eye on me for the next few days, but Yade and I had decided a few months ago to forget about them and to just live our life. After all, we don't feel the Mate-bond like they did, and maybe in time we will find another Mate—maybe even take a chosen Mate. "Happy Birthday, little Ghost," Tarja says as she walks into my room, and I smile at her as I roll on my back. Today I get to meet Yade, I think to myself. Yade is excited to shift for the first time, and she is jumping up and down in my head. "Someone is excited," I say teasingly, and she just huffs at me. Council-member Dayanah has arranged for a private breakfast in the Council's Chamber for us, and I am grateful I get to spend this day with my friends and my Father. Dad told me that Dolion and the Luna had been put to death for their actions, and the Pack is under supervision of an Elder. Axel made sure I never ran into anyone from Captain Armand's Squad, but I know Evander and Conri have talked to my Father on occasion. Even though he doesn't know why, he never told them anything more than that I am doing fine. The moment I open the door to the Council's Chamber, my Dad starts singing "Happy Birthday," and soon Axel, Boris, and Yonatan join him. But I really wanted to start screaming when Tarja, Alexia, and Blaze also started singing. Council-member Finlay is standing to my left, and I just step behind him to hide from my friends. "This is horrifying. Who the hell are they trying to scare off?" Finlay mumbles, and I am in stitches as I look at his face. It doesn't seem that they will stop singing anytime soon, so I drag Finlay with me to the window and cover my ears as I start humming. I don't mind someone singing "Happy Birthday" to me, but even Yade is getting annoyed with their voices. I glance at Council-member Finlay to see he is copying my behavior. A tap on my shoulder pulls my gaze away from the window, and I turn around to see my Father with a huge grin on his face. After I lower my hands, I tap Finlay on his arm, and he also lowers his hands as he looks at my Father. "Sorry, I know I sing out of tune. I just wanted to take your mind off your first shift. I know it can make someone very nervous," Dad says as he looks at me. "Dad, I am not nervous. But now I have to deal with a very annoyed Wolf because of all of your annoying voices," I say teasingly. Axel starts objecting, claiming that he doesn't have an annoying voice. I look at Finlay, and both of us start laughing. When we have all settled down, breakfast is served, and I actually enjoy my birthday after thinking for a few weeks I would never want to celebrate this day. Yade and I made a decision after the day we heard their girlfriends talk—we would live our life to the fullest and put our career first. Council-member Finlay takes us to a remote location where I will have my first shift. Axel tells me to relax and to allow Yade to come to the front of my mind. I close my eyes as I listen to his voice, and slowly Yade gets to the front of my mind. Axel tells me I am doing great—that I should slowly release control to Yade and not to fight her on the shift. I hear cracking of bones, but it is not as painful as I had thought it would be, and suddenly I hear gasps all around me."Sweetheart, you look absolutely gorgeous," I hear Dad say.
