When Love Is the Only Thing Left
Boris was obviously reluctant to let me take the risk. Just then, Holden persuaded him, “Both of us can't even get near the factory. Seeing Scarlett is a woman, they will let their guard down. Don't worry; Armond doesn't dare to offend so many people from K City. Even if they find Scarlett suspicious, they will think twice before they do anything to her.” Boris mulled over Holden's words and soon made up his mind. He handed me the earbud and reminded me, “Inform us immediately if anything goes wrong. We will be on standby outside the factory.” I nodded compliantly. Later, Holden had someone prepare a lunchbox and a bag of fruits. He handed them to me and uttered, “Be careful. Inform us immediately if anything happens.” I uttered a response. Soon after, I made my way toward the factory while holding the lunchbox and the plastic bag of fruits. Upon seeing me, the two men at the entrance frowned and shooed me away. “Entry is not allowed.” Instead of being deterred, I kicked up a fuss in a shrewish manner, “What's wrong with me entering the factory? My husband has been working here for almost six years now. I've never seen anyone guarding the entrance before. Why am I not allowed to enter? By the way, who are you guys? It's late now, and my husband hasn't come home. Something must have happened to him! Why would you guard the factory as if it's a prison and prohibit my entry? Let me enter to check on my husband, or I will call the cops. We'll let the cops see if there's something suspicious happening in there.” With that, I fished out my phone and was prepared to make a call. At the instant, one of the guards snatched my phone and asked harshly, “Who are you? Why are you here?” I feigned anger while bellowing at him, “Are you deaf or something? I told you my husband works here. He hasn't returned home, so I'm here to check on him. Do you need me to repeat it again? Now, give me back my phone, or I'll go to the police station and file a report of a robbery.” The two men exchanged a glance before they asked, “Are you really here for your husband?” I showed them the lunchbox and scoffed, “Are you blind? If my husband is not here, why would I bring these all the way here?” One of the men whispered to the other, “We'll let her enter. The block near the west gate is still operating, after all. I guess she's one of the workers' family member. She's just a woman, and she won't pose a threat. Besides, it will only cause a disturbance if we don't let her enter.” Hearing that, the man took a glance at me and said, “You can go in now.” Then, he gave me back my phone. Since most of the factory workers were probably from other states, while taking the phone, I grumbled a word or two in a heavy accent to dispel their suspicions. After entering the factory area, I soon came across a brightly lit building. That must be the block in which the factory workers were working overtime. There were two other buildings, one of which was pitch dark with no one guarding the entrance. As for the other building, there were lights seen from one of the floors. The building was not tall, and there were people on guards at the entrance. According to Boris, the guards would change shifts every half an hour. It was impossible that the guards would allow me to enter. Thus, I could only find another way in. I noticed there were lights from the ground floor of the building. As I took a closer look at it, I found out that that place was the factory's office. Hiding behind the wall, I overheard the conversation of two men who were walking out of the building. “He's almost frozen to death. If he still refuses to sign, what should we do then?” “We'll need to ask the boss. Our mission will fail if he dies.” My heart sank. Ashton is being locked in the refrigerating chamber? As they walked out, I sneaked into the ground floor. Fortunately, the two were talking to each other and didn't notice me. It turned out that the ground floor was a warehouse full of goods. I walked around the whole place but couldn't find the refrigerating chamber. Feeling panicked, I spoke into the earbud, “Boris, it seems like they have locked Ashton in the refrigerating chamber, but I can't find it.” Boris' calm voice was heard, “Since this is a chemical plant, the refrigerating chamber won't be too huge. Usually, it is located at the back of a building. You need to find where the staircase is and see if there is any entrance near it.” I nodded. It took me quite a while to find the staircase. Just like what Boris had said, there was an entrance near the staircase. A person was guarding at the staircase, yet it seemed like he was dozing off. Quickly, I tiptoed toward the entrance of the refrigerating chamber. Luckily, the door was not locked, so I opened the door quietly. Boris was right; the chamber was not huge. The moment I saw Ashton crouching at a corner of the chamber, wrapping his arms around his body, I rushed inside without a second thought. The temperature of the chamber was being set at zero degrees Celsius. Although it was not too cold compared to the temperature of a freezer, it was still unbearable for a human to be locked inside.
