When Love Is the Only Thing Left

Chapter 883 Friend Or Foe

His words weren't complimentary at all. In fact, they were either mocking or sarcastic statements. Despite that, I pursed my lips and waited for his answer. He paused slightly and looked at me. “If I stand by my initial decision, would that mean I'd be offending not only the Fullers and the Moores but also the Stovalls?” I raised my brows. “You could say that.” He clucked his tongue and lamented, “This is a very tricky matter.” After some deliberation, he spoke again. “How are you so sure that the body the police found doesn't belong to Ashton?” It took me a moment to catch his drift, and I explained, “Although the body is very similar to Ashton's, I didn't feel the familiarity or security Ashton gives me.” He held his forehead, slightly exasperated. “You're relying on your feelings and memory to tell me that your husband is alive? What about the other hard facts?” I thought for a while but still nodded with certainty. “Ashton is my husband. I would recognize him anywhere. That body isn't his. I'm a hundred percent positive!” He rolled his eyes at me, obviously dissatisfied with my claim. After a short pause, he sighed. “That's enough. There's nothing much we can do right now anyway. Didn't your father arrange many of his subordinates for you? Ask them to investigate Abe's whereabouts in Moranta during this period of time. Get them to also find out if there's a particular location he's keeping under tight security. If they do find a place like that, there's a possibility that Ashton is being held there. But according to my understanding of Abe, he was only just hunted down like a dog in Venria and is currently on the run. I doubt he'd have the resources to kidnap your husband.” As he spoke, he languidly turned his gaze back to me. “This got me thinking. Maybe Abe isn't the mastermind behind Ashton's abduction. Try to think. Did anything unusual happen to the two of you recently? Or was Ashton behaving differently before the accident?” I pressed my lips together as I searched my mind and wondered aloud. “Before the accident...” I trailed off. Nora had sent me a message before the accident, asking me to keep an eye on Armond because he was in Moranta. Thinking of Armond, my eyes snapped up to look at Holden as a sliver of hope entered my heart. “There's someone else we can turn to for help - Armond Murphy. He's in Moranta as well. Maybe he can find out Ashton's whereabouts.” Holden fell silent for a moment, seemingly deep in thought. When he saw me making a call to Armond, he abruptly snatched the phone out of my hand and looked at me as though I was an idiot. “Is your mind filled with sh*t?” I was slightly flabbergasted by his choice of words. Frowning, I grumbled, “What the hell is wrong with you?”He snapped, “You haven't even confirmed if he's a friend or a foe, but you naively tried to call him. Did Ashton hit his head on something? It's literally an insult to his IQ for falling in love with an idiot like you.” This guy's mouth is seriously lethal! There's really no limit to it. Glaring at him, I snapped back, “Can't you talk nicely for once?” With a sigh, I asked, “Why can't we ask Armond for help?” He eyed me, slightly annoyed. “Whether it's the Murphys or Abe, they've had their sights on Moranta's import and export for a long time. Like your husband, they want to bag this project and reap an annual profit of billions. People would do anything for money. Why do you think Armond came to Moranta? Just for some sightseeing? Is he really that bored?” I found it slightly difficult to wrap my mind around the shocking revelation brought by his words. After a good few seconds, I finally formulated a response. “So what you're saying is, what happened to Ashton might have something to do with Armond?” He pressed his lips tightly. “If making speculations is all we need to do, your husband would've long since been rescued.” The business world was indeed like what Holden said it to be. Friends and foes were arbitrary. Personal benefits were what mattered most. They were all businessmen whose sole purpose was to make money. Everything else was secondary. Archie merely handed this business that had an annual profit of several billion to Ashton, and everyone wanted to get their hands on it. Compared to an infinite source of money, human life was too insignificant. “What should I do next?” I asked, my mind becoming clearer as I gradually calmed down. He glanced at me and replied, “Call your father's subordinate and tell him to look into Armond's whereabouts these past two days as well as the people he's met with recently. Also, investigate the Murphys' businesses in Moranta, including factories. Check each place thoroughly.” I nodded, instantly turning to leave because Boris was waiting right outside Holden's villa. When Holden stopped me, I looked at him in confusion. With a helpless frown on his face, he explained, “You'd better relay your instructions through phone calls for the time being and try not to appear in public. You're Ashton's wife. Did you think they'd stop at Ashton and leave you alone? There's something you need to understand. If something were to happen to him, then all of his assets will be allocated to you. If that happens, you'll be their next target.”
