When Love Is the Only Thing Left

Chapter 882 Simply Not Worth It

He nodded and explained, “Mr. Taylor isn't staying in the Taylor residence.” Without further explanation, he drove us toward the suburbs on the coast. Finally, we stopped at a luxurious beachside villa, and he got off to ring the doorbell. After announcing his name through the intercom, the gates opened for us. When the car drove through the gates, I was quite surprised by this palatial villa. It was about a thousand square meters in size with custom-made vintage designs. Every inch of the villa screamed of unparalleled style and opulence. Boris stopped the car at the porch and glanced at me. “You should go in alone. I'll wait for you outside.” After giving him a nod, I alighted the car and entered the villa. The villa's main doors were already wide open, and the person waiting by the entrance was a well-dressed middle-aged woman. Upon seeing me, she smiled politely and informed, “Ms. Stovall, Mr. Taylor asks that you head directly to the living room on the second floor.” I nodded and passed through the living room on the first floor to go straight to the second floor. The black theme of this floor made everything seem slightly sadistic. There was no one in the living room, but I could hear the sound of running water from the bathroom. My brows furrowed. Is he showering? I found a place to sit and waited quietly for him while scanning everything around me in detail. From a psychological perspective, a person's taste was reflective of his personality. Everything here is black, so does it mean Holden's heart is too? The door to the bathroom opened right then. Holden emerged with a towel wrapped around his lower body and vapor clinging to his skin, seemingly having no intention to cover himself. I glanced at him calmly and drank at the sight of this young man who was in his twenties. He squinted at me but didn't seem uncomfortable under my unbridled gaze. Rather, a mocking glint entered his eyes. “Your man's fate remains unknown, yet, you have the heart to admire another man.” I nonchalantly shifted my gaze away and countered, “It's human nature.” He snorted coldly and cut to the chase. “I know you're here to talk about Ashton. I'll think of a way. You can leave now!” His impatience and dislike toward me were evident in his tone.I pursed my lips and ignored his orders. “The police found a body at the crime scene. It's been disfigured and bears a resemblance to Ashton in terms of frame and height. He's also wearing Ashton's watch, but I'm sure that the body doesn't belong to Ashton. Someone is trying to throw us off.” He shot me a scornful look. “If that's the case, shouldn't you be crying? At least act like you're heartbroken over it.” Taken aback, my brows knitted together. “Are you saying that I should play along with it?” The corners of his lips curled upward. “I guess you're not as stupid as you look.” This man really is venom-mouthed.  I nodded and peered at him. “What will you do?” He shrugged his shoulders. “What else can I do? Of course, I'll just wait patiently.” My frown deepened at his indifference. “What do you mean?” He didn't seem like he had any intention to save Ashton. “Literally what just I said. Why? Ms. Stovall, don't tell me that after all those years in school, you can't even understand such simple words?” He looked at me in his usual frivolous manner. Anxiety crept into my heart, but kept my voice as steady as possible, “Mr. Taylor, can I know the reason? Both you and Ashton are obviously in the same boat. Why aren't you willing to make a move?” He shrugged again. “I'm a businessman. I act in my own self-interest. Ashton was abducted, and his fate remains unknown, but you expect me to spend money and manpower to save him? To put it bluntly, if we find him alive, then all is good. But what if we find him dead? What do I get out of it? Absolutely nothing. Not to mention, it would bring me all kinds of unnecessary trouble. This risk, honestly speaking, is simply not worth it.” My heart sunk as I studied his apathetic behavior. It was a mistake on my part for forgetting that he was an ambitious businessman. If Abe was the one who kidnapped Ashton, even if something happened to Ashton, Abe and Holden could still continue collaborating as partners. Ashton would merely be a passerby to them instead of an important figure. Besides, Ashton's existence was somewhat an invisible threat to Holden. Taking in a deep breath, I looked at Holden and said, “If the Taylor family and the Moore family aren't enough to satisfy your ambitions, then what about adding another? The Stovall family.” He narrowed his eyes a fraction, and a crease appeared between his brows. “Which Stovall family are you talking about?” “K City's Stovall family!” If I had another choice, I would never have used Louis' influence. After all, the Stovall family, to a certain extent, had a prestige existence, albeit a sensitive one. Holden gazed at me and muttered softly, “Scarlett Stovall. The Stovall family? How are you related to them?” “Not related, per se, but more than acquainted. That's all you have to know.” I gave him an ambiguous answer. He let out an abrupt laugh. With his gaze still trained on me, he mused, “It seems like I underestimated you. But then again, I should've expected that a man like Ashton wouldn't be sloppy in his choices. If it was merely your looks that he fell for, he could've gone for half of the women on the streets. But your family background, indeed, places you in the same league as a superior man like Ashton. So to speak, both of you mutually benefited from marrying each other. My, my... What a perfect match!”
