Seraphina Is Back—and She’s Not Alone

Chapter 21 Why Does It Still Ache

If she claimed everything was like what Linara said, the Whitewood couple would think she was lying. That was the beauty of a calculating person—no one would believe them if they told the truth, but doing otherwise would be an indirect confession. They would always be blamed. However… "Like she said, she did not see properly and fell." Oberon and Chloe's sudden rage made a glimmer of satisfaction flickered in Linara's eyes though she didn't think it was enough. "See, Mom and Dad? I was telling the truth. Seraphina didn't push me at all. I had an accidental fall. Please don't be infuriated with her." Oberon ordered, "Say sorry to Linara." Chloe, on the other hand, was unhappy. "You won't need dinner tonight. Hunger may help you reflect on what is and isn't right. ""An apology is indeed needed, but she should be the one doing it to me." Just as the couple were about to lose it, Seraphina raised her hand to interrupt them. "Hold off on scolding." "Do you have anything else to say?" Chloe doubted that the stubborn girl could come up with something reasonable. Seraphina gestured to a maid, "Come here." As the astonished maid came near, Seraphina suddenly pushed her forcefully which made the maid fall down. Everyone was shocked while the maid stared at her disbelievingly. Seraphina eyed Oberon meaningfully, "Do you see it now?" Oberon was not as easily manipulated as Chloe; how could he not understand everything? His freezing gaze fell on Linara, who panicked beneath his gaze. "Dad, I..." Is he blaming her? No, he couldn't, for she had confessed to it being her own mistake; they simply would not trust her word. Oberon considered Chloe, "Don't say anything if you aren't sure." Chloe was stunned. "Honey, what're you talking about? Do you believe Seraphina? Linara is the hurt one, yet you're still siding with Seraphina. Didn't you see what she has done? See how offhandedly she has pushed Sarah." He didn't even want to bother with her. Seraphina smiled. "Mrs. Whitewood, you didn't see it clearly so I get it. Please don't be upset." The final statement was directed at Oberon. "What do you mean?" The onlooking maids, along with Linara and the others, were confused. Seraphina indicated the maid on the ground. "Watch how she has fallen. If I had done it, she would have fallen back according to inertia. Recall your precious daughter's posture; she has fallen forward. How could I have pushed her from behind if I was in front of her?" Chloe was taken aback but got it immediately. "Linara, did she push you from behind?" Linara was shocked by this as she hadn't even thought of it, yet Chloe's words had shifted the narrative and nearly made the cunning girl give in. "Mom, she didn't." Her words came with a pained gasp which made Chloe panic at once and her gaze towards Seraphina more despicable. A faint sense of satisfaction glinted in Linara's eyes. Now, let's see how you attempt to defend yourself. Seraphina rested her chin on her hand and batted her wide eyes, remarking casually "Oh, this is tricky. Each side has their own story. However, the injuries suffered via being pushed from behind are different to that from being pushed from the front. Judging by where she has fallen, it's obvious that the culprit pushing her from behind must have been on the stairs. The injuries from falling off them would not be the same as on the ground. It will all be clear after we investigate. Linara, please show us your hurt arm and leg."Linara felt unsure in the face of Seraphina's confidence which made her gaze flicker. "Linara, show me your wounds," reassured Chloe softly. "Mom, it was my fault I fell, so why won't you believe me?" demanded Linara with some annoyance. Oberon was not his wife and could comprehend the situation from Linara's attitude change. His irritation went away at the sight of the latter's drained look. "Alright, let's have dinner. Later, we'll have Dr. Anders come check you out." Oberon decided. The Whitewoods did not say anything about Linara's claim or penalize her for it, let alone reprimand her. Being her biological parents, they could not sense her sadness but only her wounds. Seraphina watched the trio's retreating backs with a sneer, yet while pressing her hand to her chest… why does it still ache and feel weird here? I obviously don't care anymore, so why is it still throbbing?Jasmine eyed a lonesome Seraphina with a soft sigh. "Miss, go eat. Things will improve with time." Really? It won't, not with Linara here. Seraphina stared at the maid she had pushed. "Give me your account number or the QR code." Sarah was confused but displayed the code on her phone as told. Seraphina remained silent after completing the transfer and merely turned to leave. After she left, Sarah made a shocked sound before her expression became delighted. Another maid took a closer look and became jealous; everyone had assumed she was unfortunate enough to be targeted unreasonably due to Seraphina's demanding behavior. However, the sight of the twenty grand in her account made everyone wish they had been picked. "Alright, don't linger around. Get to your tasks," reminded Jasmine. She had considered defending Seraphina which did not appear necessary now, not with Seraphina being extremely alert and tactful than herself. For young women like them, verbal apologies did not convey sincerity better than actual cash which was also much more appreciated. Linara shot glances at Seraphina from time to time in hopes to sense rage or irritation in the latter's expression but found nothing. How tolerant Seraphina was! "Seraphina, you can go report to Bloomington School with Linara next week. Ask her if you don't know something." Oberon turned to Linara. "Look after her." "Sure, Dad," answered Linara gently. Seraphina sounded calm. "Hmm." Linara stopped her immediately after seeing her in the second-floor hallway. "Were you behind the online incident?" Seraphina nudged her away and passed her before suddenly pausing, turning her head and whispering, "I forgot to mention something. I told you on the stairs that you can deduce the trajectory based on your injuries, but I fibbed. I didn't think you would actually think it true."Linara glared at her retreating silhouette with gritted teeth. The cunning girl! D*mn her!
