Seraphina Is Back—and She’s Not Alone

Chapter 18 Paupers Don't Deserve Luxury Attire

Seraphina had already swept through three stores and was now making her mark on the fourth. "Here we have the latest arrivals. These dresses would look stunning on you," the saleswoman said, presenting a fresh pink dress with a girlish charm. "Ugly." Seraphina glanced at it briefly, then dismissed it without a second thought. The saleswoman quickly put the dress away and grabbed another one. "How about this one?" Seraphina gave it a cursory look before waving her hand dismissively, pointing at the clothes on the rack. "Not this one, or that one, or those over there… Pack up everything else." The saleswoman's eyes sparkled with delight as she realized who Seraphina was. Just moments ago, their group chat buzzed with news about a wealthy heiress going on a shopping spree. It turned out to be her.Lucky for the saleswoman, this encounter would surely smash her sales records for the month, netting her a hefty bonus. With a radiant smile, she said, "Absolutely, no problem. Please, make yourself comfortable in the lounge and have a cup of coffee while we handle this." "Hold on a second." A haughty voice suddenly cut through the air from behind. Seraphina watched the four approaching figures, her gaze sweeping over each one. Kelly Thomson, Carmen Hart, and Abigail Gardner—Linara's closest friends. Every time she clashed with Linara, these three would always shield her, fighting on her behalf and standing up for her. Linara only had to play the role of the innocent and kind-hearted damsel behind them. And here we go again, another scene straight out of the same old playbook. The saleswoman recognized Kelly immediately. "Miss Thomson." Kelly turned to the saleswoman and said, "Our store doesn't sell clothes to those paupers. They only degrade our brand." Then, she turned to Seraphina with a sneer. "People like you should stick to flea market finds. You don't belong here. Get lost before you dirty the place." Nearby shoppers, both men and women, overheard and reacted. Some shot Seraphina looks of contempt, while others frowned in displeasure. Seraphina was taken aback. She hadn't realized this store was owned by the Thomson Family. Come to think of it, this whole mall used to be owned by Abigail's family until the Drakon Family from Pearlpoint bought it out. In her mind, this mall belonged to the Drakon Family. I almost forgot—this was eight years ago. The mall hasn't changed hands yet. The saleswoman hesitated. "Miss Thomson, this customer is about to purchase those clothes." It was a sizable sale, and she didn't want to lose it. "Has she paid?" Kelly asked with irritation."I was just about to process her card," the saleswoman replied quickly. "Then she hasn't paid yet," Kelly sneered, finding the saleswoman annoyingly slow on the uptake. "I'm ordering you not to sell her any clothes. Anything under my family's brand is off-limits to her." "But…" The saleswoman looked conflicted. "What, my word doesn't carry weight? Do I need to call the general manager?" Kelly threatened. The saleswoman clammed up, though inwardly she seethed. Seraphina's voice dropped a notch. "What did you just say?" Linara stepped forward, her tone urgent yet still soft and gentle. "Seraphina, please don't get upset. Kelly speaks her mind, but she means no harm. She's just saying that this brand's style might not suit you." Her anxious look as she tried to calm Seraphina only infuriated Kelly and her friends. An orphan from the slums, acting like a high-born lady, daring to speak to us like that!"Linara, why are you afraid of her?" Abigail pulled Linara behind her, making it look like Seraphina started the trouble. "Our store doesn't welcome people like you. Even if you wear our clothes, you won't do them justice. If you're a pauper, you should stick to your flea market rags. No matter what you put on, you can't hide the stench of poverty." "Your clothes are on display. As a customer, I have the right to buy them, unless you pull everything off the racks." Kelly laughed, mocking her ignorance. "I'll say it again—these clothes aren't for sale to paupers like you. If you can walk out of here with even one item, I'll admit defeat." "Big talk. Do you think this mall belongs to your family?" Abigail stepped forward, looking at Seraphina disdainfully as if she were a worm. "As a matter of fact, Baynard Mall is owned by my family. Look at you, all shabby and out of place. Better leave before you dirty the place and contaminate the air with your poverty."Linara stood to the side, watching as Seraphina faced the pair's attacks. Though she felt a secret glee, she wore an anxious expression, unsure of what to say as she wrung her hands in feigned distress. "Don't be like this. Can't we talk it out?" she pleaded. The nearby onlookers, seeing her worried demeanor contrasted with Abigail and the others' arrogance, couldn't help but think she was a kind-hearted girl. Suddenly, Seraphina began to clap. She stepped forward, smiling at the pair. "Bravo. You two really know how to talk." Kelly and Abigail were stunned, while Linara looked utterly bewildered. They couldn't fathom why she'd be so pleased after being insulted. Is she out of her mind? Seraphina took her bank card from the saleswoman, who was heartbroken but too afraid to defy Kelly. She watched helplessly as the large sale slipped through her fingers. Seraphina's gaze swept over the three, finally resting on Kelly and Abigail. "You have a very good friend," she said with a hint of mockery. With that, she walked past Linara, leaving the others in stunned silence. Carmen called out to her retreating figure, "Some people think just because they've entered the Whitewood Family, they're now high-class ladies. A crow remains a crow, no matter how high it flies." "A mere adopted daughter," Abigail sneered. Seraphina paused mid-step, turning to face Abigail. "Adopted?" Linara's heart skipped a beat. She grabbed Abigail's arm, eyes brimming with tears. "Abigail, please stop." Seraphina had only just returned and hadn't been formally introduced to high society, so few knew her true status. Abigail and the others' knowledge of her came solely from Linara. Adopted. That's new. I've never heard that term back then, Seraphina thought. Her gaze landed on Linara, who avoided eye contact, nervously clutching Abigail's sleeve. Seraphina's lips curled into a smirk, her eyes gleaming with amusement. "Adopted?" How interesting. She laughed softly as she walked away. Linara was surprised by her swift departure and her silence regarding the lie. Is she really that kind-hearted? No way. She must be up to something!
