When the Galaxy Wept
Blood was everywhere. Some had already dried, some were still fresh. Bodies were scattered around everywhere, some still alive, fighting for their last breath in great pain and agony. Zergs had bitten off some of their faces and otherwise severely injured them. Here and there, men would jump off the ground with a cry. Patrick’s soldiers would shoot them out of mercy to end their misery, while purple round zergs still bit their corpses. Some screamed hysterically as infected citizens chased them. The chaser put his hands around the heads of their prey, which looked extremely painful. When they saw Patrick and his soldiers, they jumped at them to bite them but were shot down immediately. Occasionally the local mercenary would take the shield and submachine gun to siege a dozen frightened people into an alley. The forefront mercenary shouted to them, “You have been infected and must go into quarantine! The government will save you!”“Please kill me! I don’t want to turn into a cannibal!” Someone shouted and cried. But how could the military policemen just kill them? Someone tried to break through the policemen’s siege and was shot in the standoff. The Zerg plague had broken out. “This is why the Alliance was so fragile.” Bruce sighed. “In this kind of situation, securing two planets is really difficult, so they are still good.” Harvey also looked serious. “Hope Planet and Freedom Planet…” He didn’t finish the sentence, but everyone imagines that those two planets would have suffered an even more significant impact from the Zerg invasion. “Were the zergs residuals from the Moon Sally invasion?” Bruce asked. “But hasn’t the Alliance cleared over 100 active viruses?” “Secondary infection.” Patrick’s face was cold. “from those who were directly or indirectly exposed to the infected once..” Harvey nodded. “Right. During the mass cleaning of the Freedom Planet, over 500 soldiers who had contact with the infected were cleaned in the radiation zone to save their lives. But the Alliance was not as cautious.” Patrick shook his head, “Lucas isn’t stupid. He gave Freedom Planet to me because he knew that this would happen one day.” “Then why didn’t he do the cleaning like us?” Harvey asked. Bruce grunted. “You have no idea how complex the relationships between the Alliance government, the army, and the judicial system are. To use such a resource-draining measure for cleaning suspected secondary infections that might not exist... I guess the cleaning proposal is still buried under a stack of files in the parliament.” Patrick and Bruce were right. Lucas was sitting in the presidential office, the highest officer of the Alliance. Lucas was in his early 30s and dwelling in deep regret and anger. As president of the Alliance, he was smart and flexible but not the most competent president in history. However, his reputation had increasingly improved during his second term of office. If Patrick hadn’t taken over Planet Hope and demanded to divide Planet Freedom, causing his impeachment by parliament, he wouldn’t have neglected cleaning the secondary infection. With his political career at risk, his priority had been to secure his office. At that time, it hadn’t been the time to mention his mistake in his political career, which was the invasion of the Zerg bandits and the spread of infections. Instead of ordering a mass cleaning as the mercenary had, he had ordered the Ministry of Health to strengthen their epidemic prevention program. He considered himself a strategic visionary. When everyone believed that the Zerg were after peace rather than after humans since they paid substantial compensation for the infection caused by their bandits, he thought that they were hiding something. It was more likely that the Zerg were running a test on how strong their army was, so he had ordered the military to strengthen their regular forces, disregarding the parliament’s objection. As a result, the Alliance military force had improved by 30%, enough to resist Zerg’s invasion. However, he had not anticipated a break out of the infection after the Zerg’s invasion. The new Zerg invasion had triggered the sleeping eggs inside the infected people to wake up. Sitting beside Lucas were his only son Wade and Taron Locke, marshal and senior officer of the army. Seeing Patrick and his team approaching the presidential office, Wade and Taron stood up to greet them, while Lucas remained seated but greeted them from his chair. After everyone was seated, Lucas started. “General Lewis, the parliament approved my proposal. We hope to cooperate with the mercenary to fight back the Zerg.”Patrick didn’t respond, but Bruce, who sat behind him, answered, “Mr. President, I’m the General’s financial officer. Freedom Planet suffered light casualties in the war. If you want to commission us, please see our quote.” Lucas remained calm, but Taron, who was over 50 and the oldest of them, whose gray hair on his temples revealed his wisdom, changed his face. “You are just an ambulance chaser! Have you forgotten about a soldier’s mission?” “Green, shut up,” Patrick said as he looked at Lucas. “Mr. President, I always keep my promise. This war is related to human survival - I accept your commission.” He scolded Bruce but didn’t change the word “commission.” Lucas shook his hand. “The commission must meet your requirements, Wade.” Wade looked up to Patrick and said: “The Zerg presented a peace offering - a formal letter issued by their queen, stating that if we give up those two planets, they will stop and rescue the infected.”“Nonsense!” Taron sneered. Wade looked at Patrick. “At this moment, half of the population of Planet Hope and Planet Sky are infected. We have no other choice but to delay a further break out of the disease through medicine. Government and military officers are included. Most social organs are paralyzed.” The severity of the situation made Patrick’s crew frown, and it was much worse than they had expected. Lucas looked around and said calmly. “We are determined to fight until death but never cede our territory to others.” Patrick smiled at his words. Lucas seemed to notice the smile and smiled back vaguely. “General, I never regarded you as an outsider. The mercenaries are kids away from home. Planet Freedom is governed so well on your lead.” He said confidingly.
