When the Galaxy Wept
Last night he had brought her back to the Cheetah, but before he had been able to say anything, she had become unconscious. The military doctor had said, “She has suffered great impact which has caused systemic muscle tissue damage and multiple internal hemorrhages, and that although she has been taking care of now, she will need a month to recover. No signs of sexual abuse.” The white bed contrasted Emerald’s black hair, white skin, and pale face. Her figure was small, which made her face look even smaller. The thin blanket covering her also made her look fragile. Even while sleeping, her hands were clenched into fists to protect herself. After the military doctor left, Patrick washed Emerald by himself. Her bruised covered body had a sensual smell of another man, making Patrick fall into deep thoughts. He didn’t believe he loved Emerald so much, but he did care about her. Although she had her thoughts, this woman always pretended to be docile as a cat and cater to him when close to him. While he knew that she tried to present herself as an obedient woman to win his mercy, he never felt any disgust but was rather pleased by her behavior. “My little woman, you’re really naughty,” he whispered to her ear. He also liked her body. Her body was different from her behavior, and it was without any falsehood. She was so naïve and disobedient in bed but turned addicted under his charm. Conquering such a challenging woman gave him a sense of accomplishment. Her thin and soft body attracted him, and he wanted to take her into his arms. He had forgiven her repeated escape attempts because he didn’t think she could make it, but every time she pulled another astonishing act. Just like last time, he expected her to beg for his forgiveness after she learned the information about the planet, but she had gone on her own and threatened him with ten nuclear bombs. That night in Freedom City, if it hadn’t been for the fire, he had thought that she had feelings for him, but now she violently confronted him. Patrick felt some unexpected anger. Although she did what he wanted, he knew there was neither the Earth nor her hometown. He reminisced way back at the Security Director’s house on Hope Planet, and the housekeeper told him that, “Miss Wilson used the internet...some of the search terms she used are strange... “Earth, China…” The monitoring video of her room had been sent to him at that time. In the video, she sat blankly in front of the screen, moving her lips. After turning up the volume, Patrick had heard a language that was both familiar and strange to him. He heard her speak in a foreign language. “Mom... want to go home.” There was no doubt that he had heard and even been able to speak that language before. But his mind went blank. He had lived a vagrant life for years and knew that his unknown past entailed various possibilities and risks. He wouldn’t let Emerald know about it, but she was bound to him, and he had to consider her as his comrade. His fingers gently touched an old metal plate that was hanging on his neck. Ten years ago, the words on it had still been legible, but nobody knew them except him. He read them out loud, “Patrick Lewis.” At this point and time, the metal plate was worn, and the words were unrecognizable, but Emerald’s words had made that metal plate burn against his skin. Patrick’s hand was reaching underneath the blanket. Her body was smooth and soft. He touched her skin, breast, and private parts. It seemed that he wanted to confirm that she still belonged to him. She was smart, soft, and mysterious. She was like the deeply rooted dream of another world, which had been destroyed completely, making him alert and attached. She was his exclusive possession, never to be touched by others. Perhaps he had given her so much freedom that another man had nearly taken her. Never again. He stamped a kiss on her forehead and saw her frown subconsciously. A while later, he left for the rest compartment. The torture cell was at a remote corner in the space fortress. When Patrick stepped into the room with enclosed metal walls, Bruce held up the woman’s head with impatience. The woman, or so-called “Princess,” looked almost like a skeleton with barely any blood and flesh now. The gunshot wounds around her body remained untreated, and the blood had turned dark-red on the floor beneath her. Her messy hair covered her thin face. Although the gunshots were fatal, she hadn’t died. She was standing there, “crucified” on a cross, thin and high-intensity alloy chains bound around her arms, legs, waist, and abdomen. Perhaps she was exhausted as this extremely powerful woman kept her head bowed and seemed to be at her last gasp. When Patrick entered the room, the soldiers immediately stood up to salute. Bruce shook his head to him, “She isn’t talking. Besides, she speaks an unknown language.” “All out,” Patrick ordered quietly. Bruce was a little hesitant. “Lord, she is dangerous.” Patrick nodded and stepped in front of her. The others were all out. The woman kept her head bowed as if she was dead. Patrick looked at her for a while before he finally said, “So, you are a robot.” She slowly looked up at him. The beautiful and eye-catching face was tainted with blood, her skin extremely pale. “It’s you? You speak Chinese?” She smiled confusedly. “Who are you? Are you also from the Earth-like Emerald? Did I meet two people from Earth at the same time?” Patrick remained calm. “Have you been to Earth?” She shook her head, but her voice sounded strangely devout. “No... I don’t know where the Earth is, but it was my dreamland.” She seemed to fall into deep thoughts; her sunken eyes were shining brightly. She seemed to remember something. She stared at Patrick. “After so many years, it is a person from Earth who wakes me up and another one who identifies my species. When did you learn that I’m a robot?” Patrick’s voice was cold. “The day you came to the space fortress.” “My consciousness didn’t wake up that day...” the princess seemed to think for a while and smiled. “At that time...did you intend to confirm my heartbeat? I have a heartbeat. Were you disappointed?”
