When the Galaxy Wept
Emerald was standing in the living room, looking at the outside through the curtain. The sunset was as red as blood, and the whole base was empty. A group of black machine men brought the colonization agreements, which were signed by Patrick. All the space fortresses were disarmed and parked in the harbor in order, and all the people went back to their homes and couldn’t go out, waiting for more orders. The black machine men sent tens of people to stay around the basement. Emerald didn’t know how Patrick was now, and her heart was torn with anxiety. Finally, it was totally dark, and a black fighter landed on the parking apron in the front. Emerald took out the telescope at home. Maybe countless people were also concerned about that fighter in this silent base. Several people jumped out of that fighter, and they were carrying a stretcher. The black fighter didn’t stay and took off. Then those people walked to Emerald’s home quickly with that stretcher. Emerald felt that her heart was falling. She ran to them after she opened the door. Suddenly, someone shoots her around her feet. Emerald turned around in surprise and saw a black machine man, several meters away from her, was pointing a gun at her. “Go back.” The machine man said coldly, “All the people should stay in the room.” Emerald ground her teeth and walked back to her room quickly. When those people walked closer to her, she recognized that they were the captains of Patrick, and the one they were carrying was Patrick! Once Emerald looked at Patrick, tears fell out of her eyes. His eyes were closed, his face was extremely pale, and his mouth was blue. He seemed miserable. He was still wearing the black shirt for the mercenaries, but there was blood on the black shirt, and Emerald could smell the blood. The captains hurried to carry him into the bedroom and carefully put him on the bed. Emerald crouched beside the bed and held his cold hands. Her heart ached for him. “His organs were injured, and his bones were broken. The doctor had treated him, and the injuries were not life-threatening. You can be relieved, my lady.” Malcolm said with his eyes red. Another captain put a small bag beside the bed, “This is the medicine and the needles. You need to let him eat the medicine and take the shots according to daily instructions.” “Who did this? The machine man?” Emerald said anxiously with anger. Malcolm paused and said, “The leader of the machine men, Evan Silas, wanted to kill Commander, but Calman Henry wouldn’t let him do it. At last, Evan Silas then beat him with his fists. We were all pointed at the gun, and the Commander didn’t resist. He fell down after taking ten fists.” “Calman Henry?!” Malcolm’s complexion was complicated, “Yes, he was Kahlil Silas. He was also a machine man. When we took the plane to come back, he also brought the doctor to treat the Commander.” Emerald thought of the past when Patrick practiced boxing with his subordinates aggressively. Maybe he had never seen a match before. Now he couldn’t resist his enemy to save his subordinates and let the machine man beat him. The machine men commander must have severely injured him to threaten his subordinates. The machine man wanted to show them that even the strongest human, Patrick Lewis, was nothing to the machine civilization. Emerald’s heart ached, and tears made her eyes blurry. The people still wanted to say more, but someone ran to their room. At least five machine men with guns rushed into the room when they looked back. The one in the lead said, “All of the people should go back to their own homes! Right now! Or we will kill you!” They must be afraid that humans were secretly planning a rebellion, so they were very careful about the area they had just colonized. Emerald nodded to the captains, and they left with anger on their faces under the surveillance of the machine men. Only Emerald and Patrick, who hadn’t woken up, were in the room. Emerald slowly unbuttoned his shirt and saw big bruises on his body. One of his arms and his right leg were bandaged, and he was wearing orthosis, which meant his bones were broken. But Emerald couldn’t tell how badly he was hurt inside. Emerald tried her best to hold the tears. She took a hot towel and gently wiped his face and the bloodstain on his body. But when the towel just touched his cheek, he slightly opened his mouth and suddenly spit blood out of his mouth. All the blood was thrown up on Emerald’s face and body. She stared at his handsome face and couldn’t hold her tears anymore. It was already 11 o’clock when Emerald finished cleaning up and put a quilt on him. Fortunately, there was food at home. She ate some and washed herself up, and lay beside him. Patrick was still in a coma. Emerald didn’t dare to touch him and could only hold his hand gently. His hand was still cold. Emerald was suddenly scared. She touched his chest, and he was as cold as a dead body. Patrick was trembling without awareness, as if he couldn’t stand the coldness of his body. Emerald cried and leaned on him to warm him up with her own body. He seemed to feel something warm beside him, and the arm which was not broken slowly moved to her and held her into his arms. Emerald couldn’t imagine how hard he was beaten, that he spit blood, broke his bones, and still couldn’t wake up. God knew how much she wanted to rob a plane to rush to space, wake up Stonehenge, and die with the machine men.Although he was in a coma, he still tried his best to turn his body in a little angle and held her in his arms. It seemed that he wanted to tell her that he would protect her no matter how strong the enemy was. His face was added a touch of gold by the orange light, and Emerald couldn’t see how pale he was right now. It seemed that he was still as strong and handsome as before, and he was just asleep. When he woke up, he could still be that omnipotent Commander and that arrogant man who had nothing in his eyes. What should she do when he wakes up? Maybe what was more painful for him was the humiliation he suffered rather than the injury to his body. He would become the slave of the machine man, without freedom or dignity. He could never protect his men and their families. What a big strike it could be for this indomitable man! No, she wanted to protect him, and she had to protect him even though she would risk her life. This stubborn thought occurred to her and made her tremble. Maybe her strength was too small to fight with the machine men. But she knew she had nothing to fear now. She didn’t know what she could do, but she would try anything to protect him. In this turbulent time, as the leader of the humans, her husband had to be the first to swallow the humiliation and bear a heavy load. He was the first one that the machine man wanted to kill, and she would never stand behind him and watch him suffer. She would stand by him.
