God-Tier Like System
As they drank more and more wine, everyone grew increasingly happy as they chatted. However, as they continued the conversation, the topic slowly turned to Leonard, whether intentionally or otherwise. Christopher didn’t want to be involved in this boring discussion, so he lowered his head and ate his food. He wanted to be a handsome, quiet man, but Leonard refused to let him be. Seeing that the atmosphere had almost completely shifted, he suddenly slung his arm across Christopher’s shoulders and said, “I’m sure all of you still remember this guy! It’s Christopher, the most popular guy in university back then! When we were in school, he was quite a somebody!” Indeed, when Christopher was in university, he was extremely well-known among the entire school. Otherwise, it would’ve been impossible for him to pursue Tina, who regarded herself a little too highly and was quite materialistic. One had to be suppressed before being able to flourish, and similarly, one had to flourish first to be suppressed. And the more one flourished, the harder they would fall. Christopher didn’t think it was a good thing for Leonard to be praising him so much. Sure enough, after Leonard said that, he continued, “Alas, it’s a pity! Christopher, who was unrivalled back then, has now been reduced to being unable to even pay for a taxi. Even when he attended our reunion, he came here by bus! And I’m sure none of you know what Christopher’s current profession is. He’s a chef. Did you all know that? He’s a university graduate, and yet he’s actually doing this kind of occupation. I mean…” After he was done speaking, there was even resentment on his face, as if to show that he expected better of Christopher. When Leonard first mentioned Christopher, everyone was curious. They all wanted to know how he was doing now. After all, he used to be the most popular guy. Even if he wasn’t doing as well as Leonard and Albert, he shouldn’t be getting by too terribly, right? But, after hearing that Christopher turned out to be a chef, their expressions changed instantly. “A chef? No way!” The person who spoke was a female classmate who was sitting next to Christopher. She was unperturbed at first, but after hearing that Christopher was a chef, she inched to the side. It was as if Christopher now smelled of grease and soot because he was a chef. She didn’t want to get too close to a chef!Catching sight of this, Christopher sneered indifferently. Wow! She’s disgusted by me. However, Christopher didn’t bother saying much to these classmates who, like Tina, distinguished others’ superiority by their occupations. He just hoped this boring reunion would end soon. Leonard didn’t expect Christopher to remain so calm and collected. He felt that remorse, awkwardness, embarrassment, and low self-esteem were the emotions Christopher should be feeling right now. What’s he trying to do by remaining so calm and collected? “By the way, Christopher.” As if suddenly remembering something, Leonard spoke again. “I remember when we were in university, you and Tina were a couple, right? Although I didn’t inform her about this reunion, why didn’t you bring her here too? Have you two broken up?” It only made sense for the wealthy to return to their hometown just to brag! If the person Christopher least wanted to meet at the reunion was Leonard, then Tina came second. But, it was a pity that the woman wasn’t here today.“We indeed broke up,” Christopher answered calmly while pursing his lips, as he no longer had the slightest bit of feelings for Tina. “Look at you. Sigh…” Hearing that the two of them had broken up, Leonard paused for a while before saying, “But it was expected. After all, you’re just a chef. No ordinary woman would want to be with you, let alone an excellent woman like Tina.” Leonard had always held a grudge because Tina chose Christopher over him. Now that the two of them were no longer together, he was internally clapping his hands with glee. Excellent? Upon hearing Leonard’s judgement of Tina, Christopher smiled slightly. He truly didn’t know which part of Tina was excellent. “Christopher, as your classmate, don’t hold it against me for speaking out of turn.” Leonard then continued to speak in a tone that indicated he was someone with a similar experience. “See, it’s been almost two years since we graduated, so we’ll consider you as the least successful one. Society isn’t like school; you can’t make a name for yourself by relying on a little intelligence. Society is a place that tests your true abilities. You have to work harder!” “Is that so?” There was a hidden meaning behind Leonard’s words, but Christopher still looked unbothered as he chuckled. “Nevertheless, I won’t compare myself with you fortunate sods. It’s nice being a chef.” To be honest, Christopher’s current composed look was rather repulsive. The reason why Leonard took the initiative to organize this reunion was because he wanted to show off. However, Christopher wasn’t cooperating at all, so how was Leonard supposed to be pretentious? “Christopher!” Not only Leonard, but even Albert, who worked for the listed IT company, couldn’t hold it in anymore. He said, “Why would you say such things? Leonard’s just telling you that for your own good. Don’t you see his good intentions? And is what we said wrong? No matter what, we’re all university graduates. Some have degrees, while some have diplomas. We still need to be distinguished from those who are uneducated. Look at you. You’re a decent university student, so why’d you go and become a chef? Isn’t that beneath you? This is simply a disgrace to the educated! A disgrace!” A disgrace to the educated? Fixing Albert with a baffled look, Christopher felt amused. Who’s the one who’s a disgrace to the educated? Christopher let out an inward sigh.If your skills aren’t as good as others, then it’s better to concede defeat! Christopher thought that he was an expert at being pretentious; who knew that there were others who were even better than him at being pretentious! Just as there were mountains beyond mountains, there were experts among experts too. He was willing to concede to Leonard and Albert’s ability to be pretentious pricks! As they said, disguised pretentiousness was the deadliest! He had underestimated how contrived and meaningless this reunion would be! Judging from the way the situation was developing, the reunion seemed like it was going to go on for a while, but Christopher couldn’t bear it any longer, so he got up and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, please continue to eat, drink, and be merry. I still have something to attend to at home, so I’ll leave first.” With that, he stood up and walked to the door of the private room before opening it. He was about to go out when Leonard spoke. “Christopher, stop!” Because Christopher didn’t allow him to feel a sense of superiority from being a successful person, Leonard was a little unhappy, so he asked, “Are you just going to leave like this?” Christopher smiled, then replied, “Is there a problem? The reunion rules didn’t state that I can’t leave early, right?” “Of course there’s a problem!” The more Christopher acted indifferently, the more angry Leonard became. He violently slapped the table before saying, “Who are you trying to impress by being so dauntless and unconcerned?”
