Chapter 24 Hold On! Hold On Just a Minute!

Cut open the tomatoes, season them, and put them in the oven to roast. Mince the shallots and sauté the rice in a pan with butter and the shallots. For good measure, Scarlett even added a pinch of salt. It didn’t take long for a serving of appetizing, lightly fragrant risotto to emerge. For her, risotto was not a complicated dish to make. “Luna, please have Mr. Moses try this bowl of risotto. If it doesn’t taste right, I shall make it again,” she told Luna after plating the risotto in a delicate porcelain bowl. Luna hummed and nodded. With that, she took the bowl and left. While the first bowl of risotto was made, Scarlett’s business with Christopher had yet to conclude. With an angry expression on her face, she stalked over to him and demanded, “What were you looking at just now?” “I wasn’t looking at anything!” he replied, faking innocence. There was no way he could admit to ogling a woman’s chest whether or not that woman was Luna Sears. “Don’t give me that sh*t. You were clearly leering at Luna,” she snapped upon realizing that he wasn’t confessing. “I saw you.” At her words, nearly all of the kitchen staff lowered their heads guiltily. On the other hand, Christopher was thoroughly shocked. What the f*ck? How bold is she to lay the facts bare in front of so many people? Can’t she be a little more reserved? “You’re sick in the head,” he told her with a roll of his eyes, not wishing to engage with her. “How dare you?” Incensed by his frivolous attitude, she opened her mouth to give him an earful but Luna returned just then. After thinking about it for a moment, Scarlett swallowed back the words she wanted to say and turned to look at Luna. The moment she saw Luna’s expression, she knew the dish hadn’t tasted right to Mr. Moses. Sure enough, Luna shook her head and elaborated, “Mr. Moses says it doesn’t taste like how he remembers it.” There were too many factors that could influence the taste of a dish. Even a simple risotto with very few ingredients had too many variables. It would be a miracle if they managed to reproduce the risotto Mr. Moses was thinking of by the end of the night, let alone in a single attempt. Since Scarlett already knew that she would not succeed so quickly, she was not discouraged by Luna’s criticism. Rather, she thought about it for a moment before making another serving of risotto, this time by roasting the tomatoes for a longer time. After the risotto was done, Luna scooped the next serving into a bowl and carried it out. Originally, Christopher thought Scarlett would come back and pick a fight with him after Luna left, but she only paused to glare at him with her large, watery eyes. So what if her eyes are large? If she is glaring at me, I can glare back harder! Thus, he shot her an immensely challenging glare. “How dare you glare back at me?” Once again, Scarlett was livid. She felt like there was a rabid fire growing in her heart; it wasn’t that she was petty, it’s just that he was too abominable. As she gritted her teeth and cursed him internally, Luna returned.“How did it go?” Scarlett looked away from the detestable Christopher to ask Luna. Right now, she had work to do, so she could only deal with Christopher later. “Nope.” Luna shook her head. “Once again, he says the taste isn’t right.” Still? The result was within Scarlett’s predictions, however, and she was most aware that the next few servings of risotto she produced could very well still fail to meet his expectations. Yet, for some reason—perhaps because she was the granddaughter of Master Chef Lawrence Sparks—she began to feel nervous. After yet another second of thought, she walked to the kitchen range without speaking and began cooking once more. A short while later, the risotto was done. When she nodded to Luna, the latter took the bowl of risotto and left before coming back two minutes later, still shaking her head. “Still no good?” By now, Scarlett no longer had the mood to quibble with Christopher. Her entire heart and soul were focused on making the risotto. One serving after another!Yet another serving after another! On and on it went, and Scarlett made the risotto and Luna served it before taking it back and having the former make another batch. The process was repeated for an interminable length of time, but Scarlett was still unable to reproduce the taste Mr. Moses remembered. Her small workspace was now cluttered with numerous bowls of risotto. She had tried various cooking methods and adding ingredients in various orders, but the servings were returned without exception. While she felt resigned, she still didn’t know what kind of risotto Mr. Moses wanted to have. Creak! For the umpteenth time, Luna pushed open the kitchen door and walked in. Once Scarlett saw the intricate porcelain bowl in Luna’s hands, she knew her risotto was likely being returned once again. Biting her lip, she prepared to start over. However, Luna spoke up as she rubbed her aching temples. “It’s fine, Scarlett. Resume normal dinner service. Mr. Moses tells me it was a dish he happened upon while visiting a villager’s home when he was working in Italy decades ago, and that he doesn’t remember if the ingredients are correct. He doesn’t want us to slave over a bowl of risotto from his memory.”Resume normal dinner service? After pausing for a moment, Scarlett protested, “Didn’t you say the visitor was very important to The Serenade, Luna? Are you sure we should give up so easily?” While she genuinely wanted to help Luna recreate the risotto from that gentleman’s memory, she no longer knew what else she could do. “We have no other choice.” With a tired smile, Luna continued, “We don’t have a recipe, and asking you to recreate the risotto from a simple list of ingredients is putting too much on you. We can only give up and let it go!” Yet, even while Luna spoke of giving up, her expression was regretful. Any onlooker could tell how much she valued having a guest like Mr. Moses. This was the first time Christopher saw her looking so helpless. All along, his impression of her was that she was a strong, determined, and powerful woman. Who knew she could look so delicate? He wanted to help her but he genuinely didn’t know how to make roasted tomato risotto. It was ridiculous to ask a chef to recreate a taste from someone else’s memory based on a few ingredients alone. Such a feat was quite possibly an impossible task for Master Chef Lawrence, let alone Scarlett! In the end, there was nothing else Christopher could say on the matter. The only thing he could do was forget about it. But right as he decided to drop the matter, he froze. Hold on! Hold on just a minute!
