Chapter 183 I Want You to Work for Me

The young girl already had her eyes open when the middle-aged man walked into the room. She looked pleasantly surprised by the sight of the man. “Is that you, Daddy? My illness relapsed again, and I can’t control myself from relapsing. I even dirtied someone else’s bed! I’m sorry, Daddy. I’m a good girl, and I’ll get out of bed now. I don’t want someone else to get mad at me.” Emma Sandler noticed that her clothes had stained the bed she was lying on, and her expression immediately turned from one of surprise into one of shock. Then, she hastily tried to pull herself off the bed. “It’s not your fault, Emma. It’s all my fault. Come here; let me help you.” The middle-aged, disheveled-looking man quickly reached his rather dirty hands toward the child, for Emma was too weak to get herself off the bed. However, an innocent smile formed on her face when she saw that her father hadn’t scolded her at all, and she then spread her arms out for her father to carry her off the bed. She didn’t seem to mind her father’s grubby clothes, and she even pressed her face against his chest. Meanwhile, Scarlett, who had been watching the whole scene from aside, pressed her hands to her lips as she felt a tight sensation in her chest. Before Christopher could say anything, she barged into the room and spoke to the young girl. “You don’t need to pay anything here, Emma. Don’t worry. No one’s going to hit you here.” Scarlett gave the middle-aged man a look of anticipation; she hoped he would be able to trust her words. “Please don’t tell someone to hit my father, miss! I really didn’t fall sick intentionally. We’re poor, and all we do is pick stuff up from the streets. I’m a good girl, and I’ll leave this place right now!” The smile on Emma’s face disappeared after she heard what Scarlett said, and the young child waved her hands frantically while she spoke. Even the middle-aged man took a step away as if someone else—someone he was afraid of—used the same dialogue that Scarlett just did. Christopher remained outside the ward, but he frowned when he heard the conversation going on. It seems like Emma and her father were conned by someone else, who probably told them the same things that Scarlett just did. Those people must have taken their money, and they might have even beaten the man up. Christopher heaved a sigh before he strode into the room, his gaze fixed on the middle-aged man. “Emma is currently experiencing some neurological issues, and there’s a chance that she might become mentally disabled if she doesn’t receive treatment immediately. She might also lose her hearing after that. I can get the hospital to sign an agreement with you if you’re able to trust me. I’ll make sure that you don’t have to spend a single penny.”The middle-aged man, who had seemed rather vigilant toward the strangers in the room, quickly leaned down to touch Emma’s face after he heard what Christopher said. The man’s expression changed when he saw the new scars left on Emma’s face after she underwent the hospital’s treatment. A second later, he fell onto his knees as he wailed. “Please save Emma! I’m begging you! She’s just a child, and it’s all my fault that she doesn’t have a home to return to. We lost a few hundred thousand after someone scammed us recently, and it’s all my fault!” Tears streamed down the man’s eyes as he spoke. Christopher was dumbstruck by the man’s outburst of emotion. It seems like this man must be really worried about his daughter. How could a man of his age just fall onto his knees and cry in front of a stranger otherwise? Christopher felt like he didn’t have a choice then, so he simply repeated the offer he had just made to the man while he observed the man’s actions. I still feel like there’s something special about him. He couldn’t have possibly faked that hint of energy that I’m detecting in his eyes. The middle-aged man nodded in response to Christopher’s words. He had nothing to offer, and he no longer had any money with him. I don’t think anyone is dumb enough to try to scam a beggar, right? After that, Christopher ordered one of the hospital’s staff to draft an emergency agreement before getting the hospital’s management to leave their signature on it. He figured that the middle-aged man would feel a little safer that way. Indeed, an expression of joy took over the man’s face when he saw the contract, and he signed his name without any hesitation. Once all of this was done, Emma got onto her knees as well. “Thank you so much, Mr. Doctor. My father got beaten up by so many other people because of my illness. I’m a bad girl, and I’ve made my father suffer in the past. I’ll really obey your orders and receive my treatment this time.” Christopher felt himself melting when he heard the young girl calling him ‘Mr. Doctor’. He gently pinched her cheeks and wiped some dirt off her face before he looked straight into her innocent bright eyes. “Well, be a good girl and go lie down on the bed now, Emma.” She gave him a vigorous nod before she climbed back onto the bed and laid her head down on the pillow. She was worried that she would dirty the rest of the clean sheets on the other side of the bed, so she limited herself to the spot that she had been lying on earlier. Once she made sure that she was in her spot, she looked up and beamed at Christopher. Once Christopher was certain that both Emma and the middle-aged man weren’t going to leave the hospital, he returned the smile and ordered the nurses to take good care of Emma. Both Christopher and the middle-aged man stepped out of the ward for a conversation after that. Naturally, Christopher’s main focus during the conversation was to understand how the man had ended up in such a terrible state. A hint of embarrassment surfaced on the man’s face when he heard Christopher’s question. The man let out a heavy sigh before he started to talk about his past. Soon, Christopher learned a great deal about the man and his daughter. The man’s name was Brandon Sandler, and he was left with his daughter, Emma, after his wife passed away a few years ago. Brandon used to be the president of a company, and he had a large number of employees under him. The company might not have been huge, but it was worth a great deal—it was priced at 10 billion at some point. However, things went downhill when Brandon’s lover stole 50% of his shares and chased him out of his own company. “Are you saying that the company you ran was worth 10 billion in the past? And did you say that your company was in the food and beverage line?” Christopher had to repeat what the man said just to make sure that he heard the man correctly. Brandon seemed to gain a little confidence after hearing Christopher’s question, and he nodded firmly in response to Christopher. “If I had been able to run the company for another few years, I would have managed to grow it into a business worth 15 billion.” Christopher’s lips turned upward as he finally gained some clarity over the situation. Brandon is the president of a company. That explains the sharp and confident look in his eyes. A company that’s worth 10 billion should be considered a medium-sized enterprise. Someone who started such a large business would naturally possess some amount of energy on his own. Brandon is obviously someone who has that power, and I’m sure he can get back into the game if he receives another chance. All of a sudden, Christopher smacked both his palms together. It looks like God has gifted me this guy, Brandon, as a thank-you for saving Emma! A man as capable as Brandon is precisely what I need right now! Christopher refused to take some of Harold’s men, and the reason was simple—Harold’s men worked primarily for Harold and not Christopher. On the other hand, since Christopher was the one who saved Emma’s life, Christopher knew that Brandon would give it his all if he worked for Christopher in the future. Brandon might even work harder than any other person for the sake of his daughter. That alone made him different from any regular employee that worked under Harold. A confident look surfaced on Christopher’s face as he turned back to look at Brandon. “I have a proposal. I’ll help you get your company back, but I want you to work for me. Would you want to do that?”
